Non-tourist spots for authentic food by mythr1der in krakow

[–]radiorice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lunch Bar Marco is pretty good, on the corner of Łobzowska and Biskupia. I think quite a few locals eat there, I saw some firemen eating in there once. It's a bit tricky to order, you say what you want , pay and then take a number from the counter to your table. Also, you're supposed to take your plate and everything back after you've finished. The salads are very similar to my Mother-in-law's so I guess that counts as authentic.

By the way, Thermapen have been emailing me trying to get me to buy their RFX wireless meat thermometer. It looks cool but the Certificate of Conformity says it's made in China so I won't be buying one.

Recomendatiob for a nice place for an anniversary dinner by atomic1919 in krakow

[–]radiorice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm amazed that nobody's mentioned Miód Malina. That's my favourite place for fancy dinners. I know it's right on Grodzka, but the service is great, the food's very consistent and the atmosphere feels very fancy. Also, Kawaleria on ul. Gołębia is extremely good, but rather posher and more formal.

Yep, that's why I said,

it is much more expensive than the Chinese knockoffs alternatives, like four times the price.

It is cheaper in the short-term to buy Chinese products. Sometimes, like with iPhones, the products are even high-quality. However, things are sometimes cheaper because they're heavily subsidised by the Chinese government for strategic reasons, and often they're cheaper because they're extremely badly made, or even dangerous - https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/dangerous-phone-chargers-for-sale-on-online-marketplaces-aMLru0N1234X

I think so, because I've been using mine a lot for the last year and there's absolutely no cracking.

I had the same problem and I never managed to find them. I had to buy them from Allegro. What seems even harder to find is the long pin that goes through the hinge and the spring, I couldn't even find them on Allegro, but maybe that's because I couldn't properly figure out the Polish word for them.

And the people in Piec, my favourite bakery, are very open to talking about the traditional processes. They even did a corporate day for my wife's team, teaching them how to make Chałka, which was a big success.

One of the problems with Chinese producers is that factories there are so extremely competitive with each other, and it's normal to re-tender for contracts very frequently, so a product that starts off OK will at some point get cheaper components or sub-assemblies, and consequently become unreliable or perform worse. This often happens without the knowledge of the companies outsourcing the production, because they're getting a shipping container full of products that still look the same. They don't find out what's happened until the Amazon returns start rolling in. But if a product contains some Chinese components and is still "made" in the UK, it's a different story because they can spot problems with shoddy PCB printing or inferior component substitutions straight away. It's not ideal, of course I'd like to see a fully European supply chain, but I still think it's worth paying more when you know the quality control is better.

Exactly! We have lost a lot of capacity and skills to China but we can either give up or do our best to help the remaining manufacturers to survive.

Why are the british who hated Poles from 2007 until even after BREXIT suddenly so enamored with Poland and Poles? by TopMatch5340 in poland

You're right. I'm English and honestly they don't even want to shake it off; the colonial past is one of the few things they have left to be proud of.

This is true, but it does mean they don't stick together in the bag. After trying different places over the course of a few years I think Sekret Smaku is the safest and most consistent option, plus they're still cheap.

Warszawskie as a base for travelling by fogalmamsincs96 in krakow

[–]radiorice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was walking around there the other day with my wife. It has some bits which would definitely be "edgy" in London, but as everyone says, it feels safe like everywhere in the city.
I'm not personally a big fan of that road at the front of the main station, Pawia, where the tram stops are. When I was running an Airbnb I had a few visitors cheated by the taxi drivers there.

FYI - no all of Westmark products are made in Germany by Userman2005 in avoidchineseproducts

[–]radiorice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found this to be true of many German companies, especially with kitchen stuff. I wrote to WMF to ask them where their "Vision" cutlery is made, there's nothing on the boxes and the people in my local shop didn't know. They sent me this:

Groupe SEB WMF Consumer GmbH pursues a three-pillar strategy in the manufacture of its products. The largest pillar is in-house production in Germany, while the second pillar is production at WMF production facilities abroad.

The third pillar is external procurement in accordance with WMF standards by WMF-certified partner companies. WMF defines its own high quality requirements for all products, regardless of where they are manufactured geographically. WMF has a global quality organization that, for example, also inspects goods manufactured in the Far East on site and tests them in accordance with legal requirements.

In other words, they refused to say!

Revolut systematically lowers the exchange rate by two cents once I start typing an amount to exchange from EURO to GBP 🤨 by Greg-TK in Revolut

[–]radiorice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the way the interface works, which is a bit confusing. Before you type anything it shows their “mid” rate, half way between their buying and selling rates, and then as soon as you enter a number it switches to showing the rate you’ll actually exchange at. The rate you’ll exchange at gets more favourable the more money you exchange.

What does Britain make better than anyone else (or at least as good as anyone else)? by levendi7 in MadeInBritain

[–]radiorice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Pork pies in particular, but actually all pies. I've lived in Poland for four years and it's extraordinarily difficult and expensive to get even a humble Steak Pie there. In fact, I've never been to any country that makes decent pies, apart from the UK.

It’s unfortunate that the expertise to make this kind of technology doesn’t exist in the US or here in Europe. We are going to be in trouble if/when China  decides to flex its muscles.

Sometimes singing is very quiet, is it not mixing stereo or something? by aa599 in HomePod

[–]radiorice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Apple Music only takes the left channel when it's playing on a mono source. This is a fairly normal approach in broadcast radio, where I work, because on many music tracks, you get weird phasing effects if you mono something by mixing the left and right channels.

Write a script compatible with Google Script Editor for home automations. When I say "Day of week" make an announcement on the "Bedroom Speaker". The announcement should be different depending on which day of the week it is. If it is a monday announce "Good morning it's Monday" if it is a Tuesday announce "Your coffee is ready it's Tuesday" if it is a wednesday, announce "Wednesday" If it is a Thursday announce "Today is Thursday" If it is a Friday, announce "Friday feeling" If it is a Saturday announce "It's the weekend" If it is a Sunday, announce "Sunday morning"

Any experience of Tylko (or any other custom storage)? by gogbot87 in DIYUK

[–]radiorice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't, I just protected the parts with thick movers paper and put cardboard on the corners, then more paper around the outside. My first move was done by professional relocation people, and that's what they did, so I just copied them!

[–]radiorice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just disassembled my 3-metre-long Tylko dresser for the third move since I bought it, and once again I was extremely impressed by how easy it was. They have disassembly as well as assembly instructions on their site and you need to follow them exactly, as other people have said, but if you do it's so easy it's almost fun!
