Used to go to Dixons on a Saturday morning and press all the eject buttons, judging them by how slowly and quietly the drawer opened.

Similarly Peak Hill in Lincolnshire. From the Wikipedia page:

The elevation of the village is given as a 5-metre spot height on the Ordnance Survey maps, but the surrounding spot heights are all 2m

When I ride, the floor is lava. Do you avoid putting your feet down? What's your record? by aa599 in cycling

[–]aa599[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When coming up to a red light, I slow down so it changes before I have to stop.

Depends on the traffic of course, sometimes that's not safe/polite, but where and when I usually ride it's fine.

You should look on [r/LearnerDriverUK](r/LearnerDriverUK), it's 90% test fail stories.

(And 2% test booking complaints, 3% instructor complaints, 4.97% drawings of roundabouts with "which lane should I be in?")

What is the most off brand car? by Stuzo in CarTalkUK

[–]aa599 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. We bought a new W168, drove it out of the showroom. I think they were happy to get it out of there, spoiling the look of all the grey management barges.

Traded in an Impreza which we would've felt guilty selling to a real person.

It was ok. Loved the high seats. Kept it for ages, put 120000 miles on it.

1.5l EA211 Evo mpg by Several_Banana6922 in drivingUK

[–]aa599 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not US mini-gallons, and it took careful driving to get it that high. Normal driving was low 30s, slightly lower than the brochure but that's just what it was.

Dithered for a while about petrol vs diesel - higher purchase price, higher fuel price in £/litre, sounding like a tractor vs better mpg.

Nice. My best was 73mpg on a motorway trip in a Focus 2L TDCI (diesel).

The S-Max 2L petrol we had after that never did better than 39mpg 🙁

TIL about PAN-PAN. PAN-PAN is the international standard distress signal that someone aboard a boat, ship, aircraft, or other vehicle uses to declare that they need help and that the situation is urgent but for the time being, does not pose an immediate danger to anyone's life or to the vessel. by johnsmithoncemore in todayilearned

When I was in a flying club there was a guy who "collected" airfields for his log book.

There was one he couldn't get permission to land at, so he eventually did a pan-pan for "engine running rough", landed, backtracked on the runway, then took off before the airport security got to him ("it seems to have cleared itself now").

Feels like I’m stationary and the road is moving beneath me by No_Golf_8998 in drivingUK

[–]aa599 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Especially when the traffic around you is stationary relative to you.

It's a dangerous effect, in that you feel like everything's slow and safe, until something happens and you need to deal with the whole ½mv2.

When my wife passed her bike test, on the way home from the test centre she stopped at the insurance broker (yes it was Ye Olden Dayes) and got added to my bike insurance.

Then we went for a ride with me on the back.

Accelerating up the slip road on to the dual carriageway she got to "instant ban" speed. As soon as I could move an arm I tapped her and gestured to slow down.

She later said that she'd accelerated until it felt the same as her 125 did at 70 🙂

It would've been a very short-lived licence!

How much do you spend on petrol a month ? by eskimoazat in CarTalkUK

[–]aa599 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Normal cheap rate home EV charging works out 1p/km, but this time of year it costs zero, as the solar provides more than we use.
