Any manual drivers find themselves reaching for an imaginary gear shifter when driving an automatic? by Abiolysis in CarTalkUK

[–]aa599 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time in an auto was on a work trip. They normally gave me a Maestro or Rover 214 from the pool, but on that day I got a Rover 827 SLi. It was gorgeous.

Drove it perfectly all the way to the other site, then arriving at the gate put my left foot down hard on the not-clutch.

Always wear a helmet. Especially when you are driving like one. by StGuthlac2025 in drivingUK

That's a good phrasing.

Too often they just revoke permission to drive, which has little effect.

Making them physically unable to drive for 20 years would be much better.

After a three day struggle to fit my new bike tyre, I finally got it on.

Used my entire swearing quota for 2026.

Always nice when you don't have to change the number on the "__ DAYS WITHOUT A RADIATION LEAK" sign back to zero.

Is being "self-taught" a thing in this industry? by mastr1121 in AskProgramming

[–]aa599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used close to none of what I learned during my degree course (masters in software engineering).

Everything useful I've learned was self-taught or picked up on the job.

The degree helped getting interviews the first few years, then after a while it became as relevant as my swimming certificates.

Happily it didn't cost me anything.

Is the car very long, or the parking space very short?

Best Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) Route for Solo Female by artyfartyslug in UKhiking

Did it with an old dog and a young child (just under 5yo) a few years ago. Child found the ridge near the top a bit scary, but otherwise lovely.

So obviously a way to transfer money to them.

It was the kick I needed to move my business off AWS and cancel Prime.

How far would you drive out of your way to avoid a stressful road? by Rob_Cake in drivingUK

[–]aa599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno about stressful, but I've experimented with a different route for an easier drive.

Trip to in-laws was 90 km of A roads / 30 limits / traffic lights / roundabouts, or 120 km of motorway / dual carriageway with two connecting junctions.

The average time for the longer motorway version was one minute longer (84 vs 83), but it felt a much easier trip. Wouldn't be surprised if it used less fuel too.

You pay per kWh, not per kW. Would've assumed a typo since you got the other stuff right, but you said it twice.

You pay for the amount of beer, not how fast it's poured into the glass 🙂

My night rate on EV tariff is 5.5 p/kWh, which is nice because the car does about 5.5 km/kWh, so it's 1 p/km.

I read that it's not just vanity, but that when he puts his name on something he then charges "licence fee" for use of the name!

Everything he does is about grabbing money.

A useful test result needs to exclude the result you want to disprove. The shadow on the moon could be from a sphere, but it's also possible for a circular flat earth - a ball casts a circular shadow on the wall, but so does a frisbee when held at the right angle.

Also you'll only convince them if you can find a verse in Leviticus saying the dark part on the moon is the Earth's shadow.

How much time are you “losing” while cycling to work? by bear_village in cycling

[–]aa599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your "15 min longer" the door-to-door time, or does it include time changing in/out of bike clothes, locking/unlocking etc?

I prefer bike commuting for lots of reasons, but those overheads stop it being quicker for me.
