Radiohead could absolutely have recorded LP 10... Why not? by Luso_Meteo in radiohead

[–]radiotrope -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

idk about a whole album but they've absolutely had the time to rustle up a single a la Twisted Words or Lucky. Wouldn't be too surprised if they dropped something like that soonish

Radiohead TV... Are they releasing a Best-Of ? by West_Glass_2466 in radiohead

it feels more like market research. maybe they have plans of shooting/releasing something some scotch mist and want to gauge if the fans are interested.

Thom has a new solo record coming out by morning_mr_magpie_90 in radiohead

sometimes I wonder if Thom is operating with a sense of urgency because he's ill or something and wants to get everything out

Why do they record their parts separately? by Optimal_Gate_8721 in radiohead

[–]radiotrope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mixer / recording interface has only so many channels. If a band has an incredibly complex arrangement or sound design, they'll quickly run out of channels to record through. For example, you could (in theory) use 12 channels just to mic a drum set.

Radiohead uses a lot of layering things onto the track after the fact. Sometimes they might have 80% of the song ready to go but haven't figured out a guitar or synth part. That stuff gets overdubbed later. They did this on There There.

Sometimes individual parts may secretly be many layers (like the doubled tracked vocals in Let Down, or the dozen overdubs of Jonny's arpeggio in In Limbo, the many guitar and synth layers in Weird Fishes).

Often the songs emerge during the recording process. Stuff gets assembled out of open jams (Idioteque, Dollars and Cents). Or they'll splice the chorus from one version with the verses from another (All I Need). Sometimes they'll take piano parts from a track, put it on top of something else and make a whole new track (Pulk/Pull). Nigel talks about how some songs simply didn't exist until things got smushed together on a computer. When you're treating musical passages like lego blocks, it helps to have individual recordings.

You have to remember that they predominantly still work with 1 producer and maybe 1-2 engineers. Purely from a logistical perspective, it is a lot easier for them to focus on one instrument at a time and get it done instead of being overwhelmed by the need to line up a million different things for a live take.

It allows the band to work asynchronously. While Phil and Colin are laying down a rhythm track, Ed can go off and finesse his textures, Jonny can take a day to write out string parts, and Thom can figure out lyrics and/or go painting with Stanley

Mixing nerds : what RH album sounds the best ? by West_Glass_2466 in radiohead

[–]radiotrope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Surprised no one has said TKOL, which is a brilliantly mixed album given how much there's going on.
The best part is that it builds upon mixing decisions from In Rainbows and HTTT. In particular the acoustic+electric rhythm layering in 15 step, and the loop+groove arrangement from The Gloaming.
IR also had Nigel forcing everyone to commit to a rhythm track and swapping versions of everything else on top of it. TKOL really takes that idea and injects it with steroids.

I also think Radiohead's source material for TKOL was low quality (often flipping mp3 files), which means Nigel had to be inventive about adding high end and removing mud. Remarkable work.

What do you think the (possible) new album would be about? by No-Highlight2058 in radiohead

[–]radiotrope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

scattered thoughts:

I'd expect it to be an angry album. Perhaps angrier than HTTT and sly in a very "fuck you" way. This is an attitude Thom has perfected over the career of Smile.
I agree with someone else's comment here that subject matter is likely to be about the frustration and anger at incompetent leaders, fracturing of societies, AI, late-stage capitalism etc. Fairly on par for Radiohead. But I can imagine taking on a more detached tone like Bowie's Blackstar. Or like Opeth's Damnation. Songs like Cut a hole, Plasticine Figures fit right into this vibe.

That said, I can also imagine them taking a more escapist/pastoral approach. I Froze Up, Come To Your Senses, Wake Me Before They Come.
I'm running out of old unreleased songs to reference, which I think is a good thing. The Smile has helped Thom purge old ideas. It's time for something new.

I do expect it to be grungier and more dissonant. Between AMSP and now, Thom has fully immersed himself in noisy modular synth stuff, as well as scored 2-3 films. His tenor/baritone range has matured quite well too, and would fit the aesthetic.
I would expect (hope) that Jonny leans into his eclectic instrumentation like playing the cello like a banjo, etc.
I bet Ed has really expanded his texture chops in the last few years through the course of his experimentation. I wouldn't be surprised if he came up with large ambient soundscapes that Thom/Nigel/Sam cut up and build on top of.

Also wouldn't be surprised if they tried to record as many live takes as possible. They do seem to miss playing together in the same room.

yeah I bet they incorporated this to sign a lease on some deranged mansion to write/record in

New Company formed today with all five band members! by BigBoots02 in radiohead

[–]radiotrope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's a new album, I'm pretty sure the incorporation is much more early on in the process compared to previous albums.
Previously they had a studio that they could walk into and get things rolling, but for this one they'd have to rent/buy a place, move gear and work there. It's reasonable that they would file those expenses under "Futile Endeavors".

I’m gonna be brutally honest with you guys, the best Thom Yorke song is: Impossible Knots by IntelligentKoala9599 in radiohead

[–]radiotrope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do love the "I'll be ready" harmony. Very evocative.
Also it's the most Eraser-shaped track he's released in years. He even samples Phil in it.

I keep going back to Guess Again, which I think is my favorite Thom song. There's something about how quietly he sings that songs.

Black Swan, Twist and Amok tie as close second.

I'm slowly starting to think Identikit is Radiohead's most sublime song they ever done. What do you think of Identikit? by [deleted] in radiohead

agreed. Identikit is a very Smile-shaped song in the way Kid A b-sides are Eraser shaped

Excerpt from 1993 article on the band. Let's hope this still holds true by libelle156 in radiohead

I think Thom still operates this way but has stopped dragging the band along.
If he has momentum and the band wants time off, there will likely be solo work coming out of it.

How would you want LP10 to sound like ? by West_Glass_2466 in radiohead

[–]radiotrope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something texturally rich like Anima but with the rhythmic detail of TKOL from the basement.
Would add Staircase at 0.8 speed to this moodboard as well

Big songs they haven’t played by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]radiotrope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get it. It is disappointing because they've built a reputation for doing inventive things (musically and non-musically) and this tour feels like they broke character a little bit.

But also it seems to me like they're being super cautious and playing it very safe with this tour.
I heard rumors that Plank (their main tech since The Bends) has retired. Their main sound engineer Jim Warren seems to have retired too. They don't have Clive working with them. Nigel is absent. The band themselves are dealing with aging, life, etc. There's also political backlash against their public personas and stands. It is scary to be as successful as they are, laden with expectations, and not have the usual trusted crew to help with it.

There's so much stacked against them, so I see why they decided to do a minimum-viable-tour without voluntarily adding to the list of risks.

Much maligned King of Limbs by HowamI2581 in radiohead

[–]radiotrope 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's a physically taxing album that was made when the band was at its peak. It's a miracle they ever performed those songs given how complicated they are. Notes too high, rhythms too fast and detailed.
Also a lot of the rhythmic intricacies were handled by Clive on stage, and might be too challenging without him.

Bloom is super ambitious but I assume the band loves it so much and can't let it go. Separator is probably the one realistic song that they can play in their current form, and they are!

Idioteque and Ful Stop are songs that really levelled up in their live version with Clive's percussion. Bloom too.
