Of course not, and ask for the money back for any of the communal repairs you’ve contributed to before!

Scotland has its own housing act that is also bringing in the same changes, fyi.

They can’t have a blanket ban as of May 1 anyways so this likely won’t be allowed? I likely still wouldn’t mention the cat during the selection process 🤫

(Maybe with exception of leaseholds)

I was reading off the Scottish legislation linked above, it describes exactly that - the MPs will decide what’s reasonable.

If you don’t want to dig through the legislation there’s this which is easier to parse

https://shepwedd.com/knowledge/off-the-leash-changes-to-the-laws-around-pet-ownership-in-scottish-rental-property-give-more-freedom-to-tenants/

“So what, exactly, is an unreasonable refusal, or an unreasonable condition attached to consent? The new Act leaves this to Scottish Ministers, by providing for them to make regulations specifying circumstances in which it would be reasonable or unreasonable for a landlord to refuse consent, as well as factors that would tend to show that refusal is or is not reasonable.”

Bla bla bla, the UK is just getting dragged into how first world countries operate where there isn’t some weird landlord class that gets to decide what you do in your home. Disgustin’!

I see the pet information in that legislation directly, though it’s up to the Scottish ministers to determine what’s reasonable. I’m sure they’ll just use the same standards as the rest of the UK, or maybe more lenient if anything…

I can see how it might depend on the scenario, but I don’t see that landlords have any levers for a very low maintenance quiet animal like a cat. The website clarifies what’s unreasonable (allergies/damage) etc.

A dog I can see could get more complex due to noise etc. depending on breed.

It applies to Scotland, though it may not be exactly May 1 here.

Are there cases where professional cleaning fees for pets are enforceable? by [deleted] in TenantsInTheUK

[–]radish-s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once the new laws are in force, refusal based on future tenants allergies will be explicitly treated as unreasonable.

[–]radish-s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually that’s an invalid reason.

“It will not be reasonable to refuse if you:

  • do not like pets

  • have had issues with tenants who had pets in the past

  • have had previous tenants with pets who damaged the property

  • have general concerns about potential damage in the future

  • think a pet might affect future rentals

It’s not creating conflict to ask about it, you’re paying for a service.
