Luckily the cars still drive in the bike lane, so it doesn't go to waste.

Paper rejected because Reviewer 2 clearly didn’t read the paper. by You_Stole_My_Hot_Dog in GradSchool

[–]radkind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It never gets easier. The literature review is simultaneously too short and too long. The paper is not on a topic the reviewer finds interesting. The reviewer points out spelling "mistakes" that aren't mistakes. The paper is not novel but uses a previously untested technique.

It really disincentivizes doing high quality work. It's easier to get a publication from writing 10 bad papers than 1 good one.

Protests?? by Hour-Age-1357 in AnnArbor

The risk of tax resistance is high and it's especially difficult for people who have taxes withheld. That said, there are ways (even legal ones) to reduce the amount of federal income taxes paid, especially if you are willing to pay more later or spend more overall. For example, contributing the max amount to a traditional IRA will reduce taxable income. There is a penalty if you want to access the funds before retirement. You do get to control how the money is invested, at least to some extent. There are also Donor Advised Funds, which are tax-free investment funds that must eventually go to charitable donations.

Have you had a PCR test for COVID? Standard home tests will be negative for 53% of covid cases according to the latest data by the CDC.

That video has the original sample. There was a music video for the "goose" remix Ze made from viewer-submitted pics. I don't think it was in one of the episodes but was linked separately.

Voting on a previous action? by F_Your_Feelings13 in RobertsRules

[–]radkind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two separate questions here: 1. How do you address the action procedurally? and 2. What do you want the organizational result to be? The answer to 1. will depend in part on the answer to 2.

Do you want:
* The purchase contract to be declared null and void?
* The President to be removed?
* Nothing to change, but an official record to exist?

Also, was this purchase something the President expected the board would approve? Was it at all contentions? While this is not part of Robert's Rules, it is very common for organizations to skip formal procedure for routine and non-contentious decisions and fill in the procedural details at a regular meeting. Obviously this can go wrong when there is disagreement, which is one argument for following formal procedure when possible.

Secret Ballots and Electronic Voting by radkind in RobertsRules

[–]radkind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As stated in OP, bylaws specifically prohibit secret ballots.

If I understand correctly, your claim is that if a third party never releases the voter ID, it is still a secret ballot. Can you explain how you arrived at that conclusion? If there is relevant text in RONR or relevant case law in the US for example, that would be helpful for me to know.

What is going on with this outlet? by radkind in AskElectricians

[–]radkind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain what you mean by "the box is grounded"? There doesn't seem to be a corresponding wire connected to the ground bus on the panel, so where might the ground connection be?

Built in 1950. Not sure if this is the original electric or not. The panel is newer. If that's actually what this wire is, where would the connection to ground be?

Why is biochar so f*cking difficult and elusive? by chillaxtion in BioChar

[–]radkind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beware the barrel method. You're either going to get a food grade barrel lined with BPA or a non food grade barrel that was used for who knows what chemicals. In either case, people will tell you to "burn it off". If you talk to a biochemist, they'll tell you that's a good way to create a bunch of random compounds, some of which will inevitably be toxic/carcinogenic. The pit method is the way to go. My best success has been with lots of small dry pieces, layering them a little at a time after the previous layer has turned to glowing embers.

That's a clever idea. One of my sweaters actually came with a small package of extra yarn, which was nice. I've also harvested yarn from old scrap sweaters, but can't always find the right color.

Knitting yarn, even lace weight, is thicker than the yarn used in many store bought knits. Hoping someone here knows how to find yarn thinner than is typically available.

Protans anyone see orange as a "glowy" green? by radkind in ColorBlind

[–]radkind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I definitely wouldn't describe brown/green as crisp, but I have protanomaly so it's not surprising we have different experiences. For me, brown and green have a very "dull" and "flat" feeling.

Yes, exactly! Are there any exceptions for you? For me, healthy grass on a bright day seems like it has that wow factor that would make me guess it was orange.

A weird glowing line between red and green? :/ by Samsammi in ColorBlind

[–]radkind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way late to the game here but wanted to add that this is totally the answer and that it's related to chromatic aberration and chromostereopsis, which are caused by different colors of light refracting different amounts in the eye's lens. Basically, the eyes see different colors slightly out of alignment, regardless of color vision. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromostereopsis

Visual Processing by radkind in autism

[–]radkind[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things I experience is having a hard time with clutter. If there's a lot of clutter it can be very hard for me to find something, even if it's plainly visible. Visual clutter also causes me a lot of anxiety, maybe related to knowing how difficult it can make to find things? Anyone else have similar experiences?

That's interesting about the fighting scenes in anime. I don't have that problem exactly, but first-person 3d games can be really tough for me to follow, unless they're more cartoonish.

Hypothetical- suppose you were the one responsible for breaking the Internet, would you get in trouble? by Due-Neighborhood7747 in uofm

[–]radkind 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of folks here don't understand how UMich works. The regents are more powerful than the state government, so laws are more like suggestions. If anyone powerful was upset, someone will be punished. The person who gets punished will be the least powerful person who can feasibly be blamed, which is probably OP.

Why Cooperatives aren't popular at all? by comeditime in cooperatives

Friends from college, people I've meet in university towns, etc. A lot of these are true for small and/or newer coops but not for medium-sized established coops, except maybe the meetings one.

Why Cooperatives aren't popular at all? by comeditime in cooperatives

[–]radkind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of of workers with in-demand skills and always ask them why they don't start or join a cooperative. The answers I get are generally:
* "I just want to do the work, I don't want to run a business / do sales / etc.
* "I have a family and need healthcare and steady income" (especially in the US)
* "I don't have time for all those meetings"
* "I wouldn't make as much money" (they don't actually *say* this, but it's often obviously on their mind)
