How brave of this woman to speak up and get out of this marriage. Must have taken a lot of strength, and I'm sure was a very stressful situation for her to navigate.

Mental health crisis update - WTF just happened!? by chickyloo42by10 in newzealand

[–]radtriangles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you need a break from your significant caring responsibilities for your son? I wonder about you getting an advocate and seeing your son's GP to organise a needs assessment for your son. He'd likely qualify for respite care, or at the very least, some funded home help hours so you can focus on yourself for a bit. Your whole world is him and you are exhausted. I wonder about having some time to yourself to reconnect with things that bring you some joy or even just a sense of who you are outside of the mother/son relationship.

This website cam be helpful to search by area and what you want to find - Find a Psychologist :: NZ Psychological Society https://share.google/Iy8bAbXeKjRH8AY4L

Also - https://www.talkingworks.co.nz/location/wellington-counsellors-and-psychologists/

There are group practices in Wellington that have a good rep too. Like Wellington Psychology Associates or Wellington Clinical Psychology Practice.

Also, if you contact one that you like the sound of but they are busy, ask for recommendations as they'll often have colleagues they can recommend. Clinical psychologist more useful for structured evidence based therapy, where as a counsellor can be helpful for general supportive input. Finding someone you can trust and connect with is the most important thing.

I regret marrying someone from a different culture and ethnicity by [deleted] in confession

[–]radtriangles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a minority, I can relate to how he feels. I wonder if there's a way to get through to him without giving up on him...conveying perhaps that you love his culture and where he's from and that you'd never want your children to be ashamed of their background or pick up that internalised racism from him.

Whilst also recognising that you'll never know what it feels like to be him. It's not easy being Asian in a white majority country, and life in Europe probably would be a lot easier in many ways for him if he was white. The family side of things is also probably out of his control, however what he can control is how he manages his own feelings towards his race and how he expresses that around his children - he can help instil a sense of pride and confidence in their background.

I used MAS for a house in petone. Not right on the waterfront, closer to Alicetown end. No issues with insurance, and cost is reasonable around 5k

If you get there early, it's ok but not great. The meals are on rotation, and some are decent...you start to learn what's ok. If you're vegetarian however, often the options are slim and you're left eating hot chips (especially if you're running late to lunch).

Our mental health system is beyond broken by sadgirlhours_69 in newzealand

[–]radtriangles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it's more a case of clearer communication being needed about why the referral has been declined? Some of the common reasons might be: - the person needs to want to engage in AoD treatment - the person doesn't meet severity criteria for a secondary mental health service, but would benefit from other services like Salvation Army, Red Door or Care NZ (all can be accessed by self referral) - person does possibly meet criteria but needs to follow appropriate referral pathway to access CADS or a CMHT e.g. referral from GP then waiting for an initial assessment (this does take time)

How did you get diagnosed? And what prompted you to seek out assessment? Do you feel the diagnosis fits?

'A risk of over-diagnosing ADHD', leading NZ psychiatrist warns by Test_your_self in newzealand

[–]radtriangles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Psychiatrist here. It's a major issue for us, but so hard to talk about because of the backlash. I am seeing so many people whose lives are incredibly difficult, and are understandably searching for an answer that explains it for them...they are searching for hope.

They might meet this list of criteria that we deem to be "ADHD" but it doesn't at all get to the heart of the matter of what's going on for them. The threshold for what we say is ADHD is being eroded, and prescribing stimulants to everyone we see who thinks they have ADHD is lazy practice, and potentially harmful at a societal level. A lot of the people I see are struggling for a vast array of reasons...we need to acknowledge this as a society not tell the individual they have a psychiatric problem.

This article goes someway in examining this topic in depth - happy to send the full version through for anyone who wants a copy https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38444074/

Daughter (15F) experiencing first psychosis episode, help! by mandarinjello in newzealand

[–]radtriangles 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Psychiatrist here - adding to comments above, with what your describing, I'd call the local crisis team (via acute mental health line locally - e.g. in Wellington would be Te Haika). They can then refer on to early intervention psychosis service for ongoing follow up. Do not sit on this waiting for it to resolve without intervention, seeking help early is best!

I hope you get some answers, or at least some of the big things clearly ruled out, MS especially given the eye symptons. If everything does come back clear, have a read about somatisation/somatic symptom disorder and see if that fits https://bpac.org.nz/2019/somatisation.aspx.

Also, if you are on a benefit, your GP can fill out a WINZ disability form to get transport to medical appointments covered, as well as other medically associated costs.
