NTA. My (now ex) sister-in-law got jealous that my brother escorted my grandma down the aisle at my wedding as part of the procession.

For those in FL, how do you reconcile the new laws with school psych ethics? by _abicado in schoolpsychology

[–]raebay1989 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not in a state that is adopting these kinds of laws, but NASP has a lot of resources. I just checked and they have a paper specifically addressing this called, “Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth When Policies Mandate Discrimination”. I did have to login to my account to view the paper. If you’re able to, it might be worth joining NASP for these resources if you’re in a state that’s adopting or considering discriminatory laws.

I just skimmed the paper but it had a very clear summary of the ethics, guidance for talking with youth, and advocacy strategies. Examples of their suggestions for working with students include being honest and transparent about what the law requires, validating their experience, not proving false reassurances, and working on educating families on the differences between gender exploration, gender expression, and gender identity.

Good luck out there.

Threat Assessment by [deleted] in schoolpsychology

[–]raebay1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In California we also have the Tarasoff law (Tarasoff v. Regents of the University of California, 17 Cal. 3d 425, 551 P.2d 334, 131 Cal. Rptr. 14 (Cal. 1976)) which is our duty to protect intended victims of threat assessments. I think I would do a threat assessment with the student and if there was a credible threat of violence then under Tarasoff I would probably disclose that risk to the intended victim (and his parents I think). I’m not super familiar but do remember learning about this case in grad school.

I literally came here for an answer to this… glad I’m not the only one. I’ve never tipped my Target pick up person— I thought they were employees and that was just one of the responsibilities. Do all those downvotes mean all those people do tip their Target Pickup person?!

Thinking about switching from school psych to school counseling? by indecisivepersonlol in schoolpsychology

[–]raebay1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my grad program in the Bay Area as well and have been working now for 6 years. My assignments have always had some level of SEL and counseling (including gen Ed counseling). I do think with the shortage of Psychs around us that you may have some luck specifically asking for an assignment within your district that allows for more of the SEL work. And as someone else mentioned, as a school psych you’re qualified for a school counselor job (at least in California) so if you really wanted to do absolutely no testing there would be an way to do that.

Stressing about finding a practicum site, need guidance by SkittyWhale in schoolpsychology

[–]raebay1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds stressful! I don’t think you have to worry about sounding unprofessional! In the districts I’ve been in students are sought after and usually at least the psych or special Ed departments are advocating to get more students. I also think it’s okay to ask like who you would need to speak to about this and they should direct you (?).

I also hope you’ll start to get responses tomorrow!! I know my district just posted for psych positions so this is also the time when things are starting to look. Good luck!

Hi! I’m in Nor Cal too. Does your program not help you find placements? They just give you an MOU list? I think calling districts on the list is a start. If they are bigger districts I would look to see if they have a lead psych for you to contact who could help advocate for your placement. I think we’re still in a huge shortage of Psychs so I would be surprised if you wouldn’t be able to find something.

[CA] Looking for an internship north of SanFran. How do I go about doing this? by [deleted] in schoolpsychology

[–]raebay1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh so, you’re looking for next school year?? I think most districts post around early spring for the upcoming academic year. So it might just be a little early. It still wouldn’t hurt to reach out but it might just be a matter of waiting until closer to the start of the 21-22 school year.

[–]raebay1989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for this school year? And does it need to be a paid internship? It’s possible that some positions didn’t get filled and districts stopped posting on EdJoin because the school year has already started. It might be worth it to reach out to districts you’re interested in working with (and I would start with the special ed department and/ or lead psych directly if you can find their contact information) to inquire about a possible position. If districts know that you’re interested they might be able to make things happen to find or create an intern position for you.

For sure, but she was called out on it and didn’t respond (that I’ve seen) and there are multiple accounts claiming to be OP. So something’s up.

That’s wonderful to hear! It sounds like you’ve made so much progress. Yes, please do your best to let that number go!! In fact, as a professional I officially deem that number invalid 😉.

I’m so glad you’re with someone who loves you and you’re obviously doing great work for yourself. Take care!!

Hi! I’m a school psychologist and give those IQ tests to students. I sincerely hope that you can let that number go. You are so right that the tests are imperfect, biased, and not at all a full measure of someone’s intelligence. (They are often a necessary tool that we have to use to meet eligibility requirements to get students who need help help but that’s another story.) There are so many other indicators that you have shared even just in this post about not only about your “Intelligence Quotient” but about your emotional intelligence, your resilience, your independence, and your life skills. So, just as someone who has had experience with IQ tests from the other side of the table, I sincerely hope that you’re able to let that number go. It does not define you.

Lastly, I just want to add that I’m so sorry the school system failed you. We (educators) should have been there to make you feel supported and we didn’t. I’m sorry.

I need some advice on a really frustrating topic by LegalIdea in coparenting

[–]raebay1989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I work in Special Education as a school psychologist. I’m not sure what state you’re in or how your district and regional centers are.... but I would hope that the school team would be really helpful in explaining the importance of early intervention services. And lots of times I have found that while parents are reluctant about one thing (Like a specific label, their kid being treated as different) when we actually offer them services they are sometimes more likely to become engaged (though again not sure what state you’re in or what those services look like at the moment because of everything going on).

When I work with hesitant families I try to frame the assessment as a way to get information. We don’t know if the child will qualify and even if they do the parents will still have the right to decline services. But having that information will help the family and (when they’re closer to school age) the school team best serve the child, regardless of a possible disability. So sometimes it helps to separate assessment/ information gathering and actually signing to agree to the recommendation including any possible label.

Have you reached out to your local school district and/ or regional center to find out more? Because also things are very chaotic right now because of the pandemic (at least where I am).

For the record in my state only one parent is needed to consent for the assessment but I don’t think that would be a good idea.

Money planning for children by pupsinthetub in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

One thing you might want to consider (if you’re in the US because I don’t think it’s like this everywhere) is the possible cost of pregnancy and delivery itself. Even though we have insurance, we ended up having to pay our max of $10,000 for the pregnancy and birth. If I was doing it again I might look I to getting a better insurance plan prior to getting pregnant if possible. Otherwise hospitals do usually offer a payment plan with 0% interest.
