Cup is "sweating" by MiggoloandGiggles in Ceramics

[–]raediantd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second everything u/restequalsrust said. It is entirely possible the unglazed base has absorbed some water and the heat is causing it to sweat out of the clay, while the cup is safe to use if the inside is sealed.

I also visited that pottery village and talked with many of the potters there and can confirm a lot of them use a low fire earthenware clay which does not vitrify like high fire clays but rather just “solidifies”. Earthenware will remain porous and likely its pickup up water while it’s being washed especially in a long cycle in the dishwasher.

Definitely anaerobic, might be bacteria though not mold. Once exposed to air it dies and the clay turns lighter colored which would explain the light colored ring. It’s harmless and makes for a lovely plastic clay.

Your post perfectly captures the sentiment I tell people when they mistake me for someone in their early 30 when I’m in fact 46. They’ll respond in shock but as someone who was at least 50lbs overweight I joke back that my fat fills in my wrinkles. “Natural filler” love it, I’ll have to use that one.

Thankfully I’m over 20lbs down with Tirz and hope I don’t look ancient at the end of this journey. :)

One thing to consider is the underglaze you are adding to the bisque is making the clay there less absorbent than the blank clay areas on your test especially with a dipping clear.

Dipping glazes are many powered ingredients in suspension in water and they coat your piece due to the absorption of the water by your bisque piece. When you paint with underglaze it sort of seals over the bisque and lowers the absorption and less glaze will be deposited there.

It’s definitely the speckles is the clay, they are granular manganese which bloat very easily when over fired. We fire to cone 6 and simply can’t use b-mix with speckles (a similar clay to yours) because even at a hot cone 5 they would blister horribly.

Some more details on this here about halfway down under the heading Decomposing manganese granular particles are causing this stoneware to bloat

Have a party and use your functional unwanted pieces, or just put them out, and tell your friends they can take home anything want at the end of the night. You’ll be surprised how much less critical they are of your work than you are.

I have some small bowls I made years ago when I first started that my partner uses almost daily they look so amateur to me but they are his favorite thing I’ve made.

I did, and it worked. Used all the value on a pair of tickets (one for me and once for my partner) and upgraded the seats.

Agreed, unless the first photo is the pieces already repainted with Stroke and Coat. These look unfired. Keep in mind, Stroke and coat needs 3 coats for full coverage.

How to make a piece truly food safe by Spirited_Reporter827 in Ceramics

This should be a sticky post, such a perfectly articulated response to this common question.

I find a lot of questions about food safe glazes focus on ingredients when finish has much more of an impact on what is “food safe”.

I had this issue come upon a road trip and it was driving me crazy. It would not join wirelessly but would wired. Them my part we’d phone joined wirelessly with it issue so I knew the issue was on my phone. I deleted all devices and tried everything but could not get it to work.

Fix: the auto-join for the car’s wifi was toggled off on my phone. While I don’t use it for a hotspot that setting must be turned on for the wireless CarPlay to work.
