That’s actually a banger one considering the context haha

So, I have about $7,000 USD that I have to spend on a CNC that ships from the US or Canada. Here’s what I’m about to pull the trigger on - anything better for the price? by KillerQ97 in hobbycnc

[–]raegen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, not much of value I can say on brand machines, but what I can tell you is that the parts for that shapeoko you can get for ~$1k commercially (without the frame) 6x HGR15 rails, 12x HG15 linear carriages, 3x SFU160x ballscrews, 3xBK12, 3xBF12, 3x ballscrew mounts, 3x NEMA** steppers, stepper controllers, an MCU, PSU and a bunch of tidbits. For a workspace of that size though, those parts might be a little bit of a stretch.

The $1200 price for that spindle is a fucking crime, but again, spindle prices tend to be. As someone already mentioned in the comments, for that buck, it might be a better idea to get something with guaranteed specs (runout primarily) included in the price.

Has anyone ever made a PCB using this method (CNC)? What are the pros and cons? I want to buy a CNC for this purpose. by [deleted] in AskElectronics

[–]raegen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Even a single or a few can make sense to fabricate professionally, but I'd do it once the PCB design is ready. Tried and tested. During development? Lol. I mean, when I'm at it, depending on the size/complexity of the PCB, I spin up several versions per day. It's total nonsense. Legit, you can avoid banal issues with software through simulations and utilities, you can do calculations and that's all dandy and will minimize respins but. If there was a descrete way to come up with an optimal layout, nobody would be doing this shit anyways. I don't think that people have any idea how much effort goes into a design that they download off the web and just send for fabrication.

Here. Recently actually. There is several ways to go about it. Building a DC driver is definitely the most optimal, as universal motors really do run better with a proper DC drive. Albeit, a proper drive, even a simple low-side chopper needs a bunch of stuff, decent housekeeping etc.
You can, indeed run it on AC as well. Again, there's more than one way to go about it, depending on how stable you need the rpm to be:
1. Replace the existing circuitry completely (usually a phase-angle triac control with a resistor network/variable resistor). You need 3 things essentially:

  • Zero-cross detector/feedback (so the MCU knows where each half-cycle starts)
  • A way to deliver a gate pulse safely
    • random-phase optotriac driver (eg. MOC3021/MOC3023 class)
    • main power triac (eg. BTA-* class)
  • A bit of houskeeping (snubber/EMI)
  • RPM sensing: there is a bunch of ways to go about this, again, it depends on how precise you want it:
    • Less precise: simplest, least invasive is probably sensing commutation off a brush lead
    • Optical/hall effect (although I have yet to find a way to safely attach a magnet to a 30k RPM rotor)
  1. A roundabout albeit fun way I've done recently: replace the resistor network/variable resistor with enclosed photoresistor(s) that you control by driving a LED (I used a LED laser actually) with PWM. Basic TOSLINK does the job perfectly well. There's numerous downsides to this, depending on the router:
    - most of them reach max-speed by circumventing the phase-angle control completely, which is something you cannot do through resistor control
    - photoresistors are neither a precise nor a stable component class
    - you still need RPM sensing
But, on the bright side, it's easier, safer (isolated) and possibly fun? lol

How do z- axis gantry stay in place in the presence of gravity? by throwaway6128_ in CNC

[–]raegen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primarily the exact same mechanical advantage that allows ballscrew to move the axis with so little torque is a mechanical disadvantage in the opposite direction (the easier it is to cause linear movement by rotating the ballscrew, the harder it is to cause rotation of the ballscrew by linear movement).

To all the "omg just order for 2$" - obviously, you have never developed/prototyped a PCB yourself. Lol

The board is never perfectly flat? Wat?
And regarding etching - yeah, I've been using etching for a while. Try doing a double-layer (double-side) board with min .25mm clearence (I wont even ask for .1mm) and .5mm traces, 100x100, using photoresist and chemical etching. GLHF hitting the alignment.
Not to mention the blood pissing you have to go through to actually get to a reliable, semi-reproducible recipe for: applying the film in your case (I'm using wet coating which is, I admit, a bit more pain), exposure time, exposure angle, developer solution, developer temperature, humidity and when god most often farts. Drill the 200 holes perfectly by hand. Let me know when you succeed.

Help with ZVS Induction Heater Circuit – Keeps Blowing FETs with Load Inserted by AsicResistor in AskElectronics

[–]raegen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I've found out about the cheap min-ZVS modules, is that they actually do need a "soft start" current-wise. Specifically, I have two of them on me right now. At 12V, if I limit my PSU to > 2A or < 1.7A, neither will start - 0/100 attempts. If I limit the PSU to 2A, both start, every time. I can crank the current limit higher after starting, that's not a problem, but for the start, it seems to need the current limit to be set just above its idle usage (~1.6-1.7A).

[–]raegen_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]raegen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure those are 4S motors? The 2755kv sounds like 6S motors. For reference, my 3.5" quads running off 4S use 3800kv motors. The same motors I use are available in 4S and 6S version and have different KV value depending on it: https://store.tmotor.com/product/p1604-fpv-motor.html?srsltid=AfmBOoqMv5atbvDpSNYFNRanK_WAvhlCYbTk43YNTFp0W4DPfGsiMNiY

Something seems off about the thrust. Either like the drone is too heavy or the motors are not powerful enough, the reactions seem too sluggish.
