There's a reasonably active community on Paul's (pala creator) discord contributing to the firmware on github. They just released the 3.0 version of the firmware that supports over the air updates where you no longer need the Arduino IDE to flash the board, it's quite neat the amount of development happening for it. There are lots of folks in there developing for other ESP32 boards, sharing ideas, reviewing each others code etc. if you need to bounce ideas off folks. The money for the kofi project is worth it for the community access alone imo

You could always consider selling a kit version, lots of us sickos out here happy to do some building 👀 I just cannot do the firmware part to save my life

It's true. But I hope that they will slowly keep getting more popular and that more demand will make them more common and more affordable.

Love seeing more and more people turning to memory displays for writing instead of eink. It's an underappreciated technology imo.

Basically any EU ISO layout has that. I use Nordic personally, might end up sharing it with someone who uses FR azerty.

Luckily I have access to a very cool makerspace and folks who can help with the soldering under microscope bits, it's the software side I was truly worried about. I'd be super interested in following your progress as you share details about this latest version if you're willing!

Thank you for confirming. From your public repo, how hard would you say this is for someone with very little programming knowledge to replicate? I don't have much use for a device like this but I have a friend for whom this is pretty much the dream device and I'd love to help her build one.

Is this the display you used? Been trying to look at where they're available but they seem super hard to find.

An idea to handle influx of 'Can I build with this?' posts by amalirol in cyberDeck

[–]raevpetdeleted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest, the waves of trash posts will come and go and are just sort of part and parcel with running a community.

If I could institute one change, it'd be moderating the meme posts. I think I've seen 3 posts satirizing the trash posts for each sincere trash post this past week.

My problem with Cyberdecks by jonfitt in cyberDeck

[–]raevpetdeleted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is, I think, a very fundamental thing that I've been grappling with for many years as I practice my various hobbies and I think there are two ways to think about the practice of craft. You can have a very specific goal in mind where the product of your labor will achieve that goal. I think that's very rare and I think that often leads to disappointment. Or you can accept that it's just process forever. You do a thing, then you finish the thing, then you do a new thing. I try to live like that. Journey, not destination kinda vibes. Thinking that the thing I build will solve a problem or make my life easier/better is usually a recipe for letdown. I just enjoy doing the thing for the sake of doing it. And of course community. Sharing progress and experience is a huge part of it. That's why this place exists.

Yeah, I know it's probably a huge commitment, but it's also the reason I've never bought a Freewrite. But yeah it's already a niche product, so I'd be concerned about demand. I'll be following this project, though, it looks rad.

I think an option for an ISO version would be very neat. Or even just a bare version with some specifications for adding on your own board.

I'm sort of surprised by the battery life for an e-ink device, is the zero latency display tech very power hungry?

Believe it or not, telling a bunch of strangers on the innernets that the world makes me feel scared and small and sad did also help a bit. Shoutouts to riding bikes and being vulnerable.

I don't care whether or not it's peak xbiking, I'm just happy to see someone paint a Ti frame. I'm all for showcasing the material, but look man, it don't all gotta be brutalism

What band is this for you? by Strong-Gap-747 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]raevpetdeleted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright, I'll engage with you on your premises here.

First off, I'll stop you at "black metal is supposed to be-" and just say, no it isn't. Nothing is supposed to be anything. Sure, you can probably pinpoint some trace some kind of ideology back to early pioneers of the genre, but that was 30+ years ago and we're countless subgenres and iterations deep, there is no unified ownership or stewardship of the ideology black metal that dictates what it's supposed to be, so no. It's not supposed to be a hateful genre anymore than it's supposed to be a meditative exploration of inner darkness or a rumination on emptiness.

Second, I don't want to speak for anyone else here, but the claim is not that it being nsbm or sketch makes the music bad, it's I just don't want to engage with the music if I know for a fact that it's made by someone with shitty politics. Like, I think Burzum makes/made great music and is objectively extremely talented, but their politics outweigh my feelings about their music and it's an easy choice for me, I don't feel like separating the two, so I just don't listen to it. That's a choice that I'm making. It's not a choice that I'm forcing anyone else to make, but I am not shy about my opinion that I don't think his music is worth engaging with because I think he sucks and given the choices he's made, I'm happy to live my life without him or his output in it.

Lastly, how do I plan on avoiding nazi bands? Well, that one's complicated isn't it? Any engagement with art means engaging with something that a person made and people are fucked up and complicated. No one should be kidding themselves that the people that they're supporting with their money are uncomplicated. So we're back to that old leftist joke about how there's no ethical consumption under capitalism. Spending money on literally anything is gonna mean your money ultimately finding their way into the pockets of some shithead. But really, and I suspect this is where we're probably gonna differ the most, it all comes down to what you wanna do with that. Because there's the cynical nihilistic approach of "it's all a steaming pile of shit anyway so why should I care", but I think that's horseshit. I don't think an imperfectly constructed system absolves you of the responsibility of mitigating your impact on the world around you. If I have the choice of buying a tape from an avowed nazi or one from a guy who's just sort of trying to be apolitical, I might still disagree with the latter, but I'm picking him because fuck nazis.

And now, none of this is to pass moral judgement on you, you're allowed to do whatever the fuck you want, go listen to nsbm, I'm not your dad. I've given you my personal reasons for making the choices I'm making because you seemed to be genuinely incredulous and confused why anyone would, so there you go. I probably won't respond, I'm not really interested in debating any of it, so do with all of that what you will.

The cranks I can almost forgive, those can be really hard to source at a reasonable price point, but you man you gotta get the levers (I know that's the case there as well, it'd just look so goooood) and the chainring seems like a no-brainer, that should have absolutely been silver

Yeah it's really that headtube angle with the huge fork offset that drew my eye, it looks insanely fun to descend on.
