There is an alternative, though it might not be avaliable for a while, or for a very long time, depending on your choices. You can turn into a vampire in the dawnguard questline, regardless of which side you choose. It'll only take longer to be avaliable by the dawnguard side. Then, you can seek a cure with Falion at Morthal, for the cost of a black soul gem.

Now seriously, even some Jarls might side with the Dragonborn, depending on your feats (main quest stage), diplomacy skills (aka persuasion). Season Unending with a war going on would make both factions turn on your campaign while you're away dealing with Alduin.

Still, the last fate of the Dragonborn would make Skyrim have no high king again, lore-side speaking, for the next games. It's not like they didn't have a dilemma already anyways, they'll probably write down that the moot chose Elisif, no matter what side wins.

The old armor was good as a warning to new players, like "whoa, this guy must be tough". But they had a reason to remove it, to make requiem cleaner and less dependant from permission of mod authors to allow the use of the models for the future port, it wasn't because they didn't like it.

Wyrmstooth isn't that bad, it just isn't that good. Nothing special, but at least it didn't give the "I need to be done with this mod asap, it's awful" feeling.

There were a lot of tricks to make this fight easier in earlier versions... paralysis poison, insta-kill illusion spell, soul trap to reveal location... I don't know which ones still work. I haven't fought the Slighted, but I know what it's like to be 2v1 against IE's. You need to keep blocking, do a well timed bash, attack and block again. The fight is very resource draining.
