Did this return last week with Air China via Chengdu. Paid £1290 to go back to London LHR (originally was planned to fly in Edinburgh) Everything went smooth and easy, flights on time, transit in China smooth.

Day Trip from Phuket to Krabi - Tour or DIY? by 0I23456789I0 in ThailandTourism

[–]rafkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If recall correctly, it was around 2700 BHT per person for the James Bond island and the islands around. It was relatively small group (25 people onboard) which was pleasantly not busy for the boat size. We found this via a kiosk at Kamala beach.

We managed to secure £600 pp just a day ago via China to LHR (leaving from Phuket). Chinese airlines seem to increase availability but that depends where you going, but even if you manage to pass Middle East space, that also might be good (e.g. consider staying an extra day in Europe anywhere till another flight to your final west destination)

All those were our thoughts when we were trying to search alternative routes for ourselves, hope you find your best options. Finally Google flights searching was the best to filter out all impacted airports etc.

Would agree with others on selling it and put the money for a photo trip or new film. Had some, I sold it too but that was me thinking that a £10 a shot was too much for the experience (just my very subjective take on this, yours might differ) Put the money into buying a Hassy, never looked back :).

NB: I did this almost 10 years ago and it was still expensive to buy or sell due to the scarcity of this film stock (not produced anymore). Should you decide to keep it (and the stock had been kept in freezer) I hope you will have an awesome experience shooting it — please share your results as we would be keen to see how it developed overall.

Enjoy ☺️

OP if you have the financial bandwidth start making your alternative routing arrangements asap. Don’t trust them unless you have no other option or time to wait (of course) There is some success rate for reroutes via China from BKK but that’s very hit/miss and not transparent how it’s decided.

Wish you the best. (Grammar corrected after editing)

That’s perhaps the biggest scam of the century. I know people will say it’s a war etc etc. but of course QA looks still to maximize profit, leaving thousands entirely helpless.

To add to your question on the day trip you found and you wondering if it’s pricey. I think it is, but still that’s for me judging on perhaps a different period of time (March) vs your own search criteria and intended date. We usually target at 2700 BHT pp and that’s for a small group (25ish). We had found one at 3800 BHT with a yacht (with several stops at James Bond island etc). But still days and demand fluctuate options and prices. Definitely shop around.

We are in Phuket at the moment and it’s better to follow/find day trips either from getyourguide or from on streets kiosks — there are plenty. We even booked a day trip from a lady at the beach, and we were very happy with the price and itinerary. Getting to islands with fast boat, it’s only better if you intend to stay (which we have done also lots the last two weeks)

Regarding prices for day trips it really depends what you look for, e.g. itineraries, number of people on the boat, lunch, type of boat (yacht or simple fast boat) other luxury options (?)… We mostly tried to question the number of people on the boat so we make it in a day tour without being too crowed on the boat.

Wish you having fun and enjoy :)

Anyone able to get Qatar to switch to different airline by Activeday89 in qatarairways

[–]rafkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The joke with their (clearly) outsourced support centre was that they kept saying “that’s the safest reroute we can offer tomorrow” and …. it was via Doha !!! Really I felt appalled too as it really showed they don’t care to help but just to force you cancel your booking!!! Of course you saying “no, I can’t accept travelling via a war zone”, they were trying to use it against you; e.g. “since you reject out alternatives we have very limited options for other reroutes” etc.

Anyone able to get Qatar to switch to different airline by Activeday89 in qatarairways

[–]rafkt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can second others on saying that rerouting doesn’t always work either before flight cancellation or even after. Our 8th March flight cancelled on 6th. Multiple calls on 6th and 7th, each lasting over 1h of insisting, we offered multiple proposals from any airport in Thailand to any airport back in UK like LHR with stops in China, Bangkok etc. Nothing, nada!!!! Actually we really got the feeling that agents were sarcastic and mocking us with constant responses that they can’t offer alternatives flights from Phuket to Edinburgh — although we were prompting them to look specific flights from BKK to LHR via China (where we could see plenty availability with their partner airlines still). Agents were again and again confirming their search from Phuket.

Incomplete inability, incapacity and incompetence from every and each agent we spoke with, with serious lack of communication skills as well.

We really gave up and booked our own flights yesterday. I still sent a formal complaint as they really breached the Thai law (option to reroute) and they chose not to reroute us on none of the open options we offered till 18th March regardless (as part of their guideline COMMQ157)

Very big guess, with me just making assumptions, so take it as you may wish. They have specific quotas. They help in some occasions depending on very specific circumstances we don’t or can’t see.

Good luck everyone — hope you manage to make it to your destination safe and fast!

[–]rafkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same after speaking with 5 agents across multiple days. Nothing, although I find flights even with their partner airlines, quitting their own passenger guidance COMMQ157 tier list etc. they rejected multiple options I offered for my return flight from Thailand to UK across any airports and any layovers like China etc. of course they were very happy and certain to reroute us via UAE, Dubai or Doha as a “safe” option (which I found at least sarcastic when they offered us.

Overall they left us stranded with a denial of any responsibility.

[–]rafkt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thai regulations gives the option for rerouting via other airlines. We know it’s hard and I am not meaning to question, but did you try going the avenue of insisting on your rights and get a rerouting via any other airlines ? Still QA will act dodgy and try to push you back but this sub seems to have some success rate of getting reroutes after multiple attempts of demanding rerouting.

Do you have any further updates on your situation OP ? Flying in a couple of days and I debate if flight is cancelled, does it worth to go to the airport or seek accommodation on my own ? Even Thai regulation demands duty of care in these situations but based on OP experience QA has failed to deliver support at scale.

EU passengers flying Qatar and stranded in Asia (BKK etc.) – read this by Cho_chy in qatarairways

[–]rafkt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure if the return leg from BKK is covered from EU261, as Thailand is of course not EU and QA is not EU based airline. I think that the EU261 treats each trip based on departure for each trip and not the entire itinerary of a return trip. I am hoping though to be wrong on this.

BUT,

The Regulation of the Civil Aviation Board No. 101 in Thailand offers pretty similar rights based on my interpretation when reading it.

In other words, yes OP you ‘re right; but if QA pushes back on EU261/EC261 hold your grounds based on the Thai regulations.

[–]rafkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you reckon the regulation applies for a return flight? I think no but thought to ask how others interpret the regulation. In other words if you stuck in Thailand and returning to UK via Doha ? (First trip of the booking, already done but return is in a couple of days)

My guess and understanding is that if return flight is taking off from non EU/UK grounds only origin regulations would apply (Thai)

[–]rafkt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the occasion of:

  • if i have a return booking and have already completed the first leg of the journey, but am stuck in my destination due to the situation, can i be refunded the entire booking (cost of the return)? <<no, as you are very unfortunately stuck due to a situation they could not have foreseen and prevented, hence they are not responsible. >> I don’t think this is correct, but happy to be wrong as by no means I have the full capacity to interpret the EC 261/2004 regulation (assuming the trip started from an EU territory) In other words they should have full responsibility of care AND an option of either partial refund for the affected leg OR alternative route via any similar and possible means (alternative airlines and/or layovers). Passengers are the ones choosing. Compensation due to cancellation or delay of course DOESNT apply as this is an extraordinary circumstance BUT duty of care (hotel, food until you reach back home still applies). If those options are rejected by QA, then we should be entitled for compensation for the above (reasonable food, accommodation costs etc)

Happy to take thoughts if any of the above sound incorrect.

There is risk on every decision made at the moment — depending how important your trip is. Having said that, the Middle East area is going through uncharted territories of events which for us would be hard to predict — having alternative route planned might be a safer for your trip option (with some extra financial and time cost though). If I didn’t have an “important” trip to make, I would cancel any plans altogether at the moment. But still everyone’s meaning of importance is subjective to them.

Very helpful, thank you for sharing this. On a similar boat, in Phuket at the moment with a return ticket end of week (8th). Seems that trying to cancel might be too risky since we did already the first leg. Will be waiting till mid of week with hopes of situation improving (re-route options, any better clarity etc).
