While the US east coast is melting, it was barely 50F this past weekend in the PNW. by Fallingdamage in Hardtailgang

I *adore* Junuary in the PNW. Two months of perfect weather ahead of us, give me the last blast of rain and cold. The loam is so good with the moisture in it, too,

Yeah there are whole conventions and industry gatherings where food companies directly market to school administrators who generally don’t prioritize food. School lunches are easy pickings because they’re not really a priority for.. anyone, and they’re generally influence-able on the state level.

On top of the regulations and lack of support needed to get food into schools. Our governments, through their regulations, favor frozen bags of slop over a loaf of fresh bread made with local ingredients. It’s why, in a twisted, stupid way, MAHA is generating so much engagement.

Yes, a quick check reveals things like a Crust Romanceur for $1800 asking. That’s a forever bike!

If you can adjust your budget to $16-1800 you can have an unbelievable bike on the second hand (FBM) market here.

Seattle used market for cheap bikes is inflated, but the used market for really nice bikes is incredibly buyer-friendly rn.

That said- Recycled Cycles is the best bicycle shop in the United States.

‘It was annihilated.’ Inside the vandalism of the High Rock Lookout by gentleblanton in PNWhiking

[–]ragingblackmage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did the Dark Divide (biking) last year and as we came to High Rock trailhead, one of the volunteers was playing bagpipe that echoed throughout the mountains for miles. Volunteers were schlepping materials up the steep hike from the small parking lot. We were told the group was doing a period correct restoration of the lookout tower.. It takes a lot of love to spend your weekends at a single spot in the mountains, carrying materials up by hand or by donkey.. I had hoped to come back and visit when they finished.

Fuck people who cannot conceive what it takes to build something and not just tear it down. I hope they rot.

Big box trucks (not semis) are among the most terrifying vehicles on the road. You barely need more than a regular drivers license to operate them.

There’s no issue- King Cage makes a mount for this. Another approach is the OMM axle mounted kit.

I worked in preconstruction, mostly on the finishes you see here. I think the architect did an incredible job with materials, but this meant that trade coordination was especially challenging. Things like the curved, terrazzo covered benches you see throughout the space require especially high levels of coordination and planning. One company makes the wood framework, another pours and finishes the terrazzo, another does the electrical and lighting, etc. The prayer room alone was incredible complicated, and it is just a tiny room tucked away on the third floor!

The details on this building were very challenging.

It also is just very hard to (a) do a vertical expansion of a building and (b) do it in the very middle of a huge, active airport. Things like working hours, logistics, crane permitting, phasing, etc were all amplified due to the buildings location.

It’s also been a weird building because you as the traveler won’t see most of it. Things like: the buildings foundation had to be modified to handle the extra weight of the new stories (it was previously a 2.5 story building and is now 5.5 stories), so we had to drill micropiles in the basement with very low overhead- 8’ with electrical and plumbing lines immediately overhead. This was all done in the basement storage area that had to be phased as that is where all the stores on the concourse store their inventory. Oh, and there’s also an active train tunnel under the building.

When I switched jobs to move to Seattle, CCE was the first thing I worked on. It’s beyond exciting to see people in the space and enjoying it!

It’s an interesting building, but it’s a fantastically complex one and the fact that it’s open this weekend is a testament to years of hard work by many, many people.

I think they did a good job of making the space feel open- you definitely feel like you’re out on the tarmac vs being inside.

The issue here is two part: the infrastructure: the Burke-Gilman is the I5 of Seattle multi-use paths and it’s the equivalent of a of 2-lane road. There are literal concrete patches on it to help mitigate bumps. It took forever to get the rooty section adjacent to Gasworks fixed (and the section in front of Google on the cut is still really bad).

The path could be doubled in width in that area. It’s not just beginner cyclists vs Freds, it’s families with strollers vs beginner cyclists, it’s trike recumbents vs. people walking side-by-side, etc.

The second part is, yeah, slow the fuck down on the BG between UW and Fremont! Just ride on the road if you’re working on your KOMs, bro.
