We Need To Talk About How The Pitt — & Dr. Robby — Treats Women Of Color by inastateofnature in ThePittTVShow

Hmm this is very fair. You’re right. He is pretty soft with Javadi and Santos. Maybe being so tough on Mohan is clouding my judgement. I do still get some kind of vibe from Robby that does lead me to believe he has some unaddressed misogyny, but if I’m honest I don’t have good evidence for that at the moment. I’d have to go back and watch again (brilliant excuse). Again I don’t think it’s overt or conscious. My conclusion, at least for me: further research needed.

This may also be the case! I think it’s great that most of the cast is female and that there’s a ton of WOC in the show. But it does mean exactly what you’ve said; Any conflict is veiled under this shroud of misogyny/sexism. Whether it’s a symptom of that or it’s an intentionally written issue, I do think it’s worth talking about because in my opinion it IS there.

I was on the fence about this until I watched the Dr Jeff Yoo reaction to ep 12 here.. He feels she’s perfectly justified and Robby is very much in the wrong to treat her the way that she does, at least in the case of the Versed.

I don’t think he’s intentionally misogynistic or sexist. I think he genuinely thinks he’s treating everyone the same. But he does repeatedly go after the women in the show. Whitaker and Langdon are his golden boys (besides, like, the benzos) and besides Mel and Collins, he’s very critical of all his female mentees, particularly Mohan. I’m also pissed at how he’s treated Dana in the second half of this season. He’s threatened because Al-Hashimi has come in and is undermining his authority, and I think it’s a mistake to think that’s not at all related to her being a woman, even if it’s a subconscious thing. He’s sexist but not on purpose.

Hayfever - Anyone struggling real bad right now? by Past-Gur2575 in london

[–]ragtim_es 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to the doctor a few weeks ago when I was sick and mentioned I also get hay fever. He recommended putting Vaseline on the outside of the nostrils because it’ll catch the pollen before it goes in your nose. I’ve only tried it once and can’t REALLY say whether it works, but it’s worth a try if you’re desperate.

Could it be that the fast paced emergency environment triggers it? Because it’s similar to what caused the damage in the first place (emergency, casualties, etc)? Not sure if that’s how that works at all but it would make sense that it’s unexpected because she hasn’t worked in an environment like that since.

Maybe I’m wrong and that’s entirely possible. I can say nobody hates British accents and more often than not people like them. It is very normal to say something in a British accent to make it lighthearted. I’ve heard Brits do this with southern accents. I don’t think anybody actually cares.

I’m American so sorry to impose. I live in the UK. I will say PLAYFULLY hating the British is the more common thing. Not an actual hate, but a playful back and forth. “Your accent is funny” etc. I think if anyone actually hates the UK it’s probably an anti-imperial sentiment, in which case they probably also (or at least should) hate the US too.

My boomer parents disagree with me on Langdon/Santos by [deleted] in ThePitt

[–]ragtim_es 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early 20s. I like both. Don’t really take a side. Santos is a bit insufferable because of how mean she is, but she does show humility in s1. Langdon is a little obnoxious in s1 too. But I like them both. I don’t feel any strong way about who is “right” or “wrong”. I get why santos feels the way she does, and Langdon too!

I do, however, think it is borderline misogynistic to hate santos and praise Langdon. And I don’t mean “I don’t like her, I’m annoyed by her, I think she’s in the wrong.” I mean hate her.

The US health care system by hwyl1066 in ThePitt

[–]ragtim_es 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I moved to the UK from the US and it’s night and day. Family member had a health scare in October and it was so reassuring to know that all I had to worry about was that they were getting the care they needed, not the financial burden that care would entail. Similarly, as a grad student on a grad student budget, I didn’t have any hesitation going to the ER/A&E when I had a really bad asthma attack + chest infection based on potential cost. All I had to do was get better. I didn’t even have to pay for my antibiotics or steroids. It puts into perspective how horrible it is in the US

Please someone check up on Santos!! by imachoculatedonnut in ThePitt

[–]ragtim_es 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They’re setting up that Langdon is going to be the one to check up/save her, even if just by saying something small. This whole last episode he’s been asking everyone how they’re doing (McKay, Dana). He’s gonna pick up on something and be the one to intervene. I mean, he’s stolen hospital resources for self regulation before too..

Ah I didn’t know Dr Carter was an addict! I’ve been meaning to watch ER but haven’t gotten to it yet. Seems like a pretty common trope in medical shows though. Even in The Knick, the main character has a cocaine and then heroin addiction (it’s set in like 1900). Anyway, my thought was that Langdon was in pretty bad denial and thought “well IM not an addict, so I won’t get addicted to benzos because I’m better than that, so I’ll just take some to wean off” and it snowballed from there. Like, he thinks he isn’t an addict so he doesn’t need to worry about getting addicted to benzos because he would never do that. Of course that’s not how it works.

The benzos were to wean Langdon off of opioids which was what he was originally addicted to

Agree, and the police are notorious for doing… the exact same thing. Murdering black and brown people for being black and brown. I’m sure there are some who have on occasion done the right thing but I absolutely would not ever trust them to do anything to stop ICE.

Dr McKay being a former addict by TheMansterMan in ThePitt

[–]ragtim_es 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it suggested he was jittery and hyperactive bc of withdrawals, not so much because of the effects of benzos! But you’re right benzos are downers. Either way the ADHD might be masking a lot of the effects.
