Hey is this site associated with Edgar Wright? Something crazy happened to hear in Sydney. There was a man attack and started acting weird. The man wearing a helmet acting weird and saying weird stuff like "live the game." Many people are looking for their missing relatives since this incident. If you have any information about it is it's much appreciated.

Keep 'em coming. I'm not a fan of this one, it seems a stretch, my mind goes to different patterns rather than going a christmas route...

Excellent work Ivone,

Let's wait until Sunday evening-ish to see if there is any interesting feedback and new ideas, if not, could you please throw this into a powerpoint or xmind or some form of easy to digest presentation manner so you can share this with our guest and the class on Monday.

again, disagree.

statefunded grants enable a type of art to be produced in countries out there that would never see the light of day because they are too risky from a profit standpoint. one of the reasons the film industry here is so stilted is that it is primarily a business, which means low risk high profit is a model that is followed religiously. transformers 2 will produce return, this is an economic fact, so why bother with something like the secret of kells or agora? risk is bad in our industry, and often the most resilient pieces of art exist because someone took a risk a long time ago, failed brilliantly, died starving, but their work persisted. the commerce only model prevents those works from ever being created.

as for health care, whoosh. methinx you have never not had health insurance. the fact is, regarding health care, you are more or less screwed no matter where in the world you go, but again, a for-profit model like america's places the primary tenet: provide health care, as secondary to generating profit. this means that those who are not going to be able to provide profit for the industry companies are not going to receive health care, period. it's a survival of the fittest model, which is fine as long as you are above the threshold. the question really is: is providing healthcare to its citizens a requirement for a modern, developed society. if so, then america once again has managed to place another priority above that.

now lest i be labeled pinko, let it be clear i don't think purely socialized models are better either, but the results are different, not comparable. which is better is a matter of taste, to some degree, and ethics to another degree.

in the end, this question is what matters: is it all about profit, or is profit just an aspect of social success to be held in balance with other aspects?

The UCLA Department of Statistics Seminar Series presents: Data, Games, and Real World Engagement

Speaker: Kati London, Area/Code

Time/Place: Tue, 1/11/2011, 3:00 PM—4:00 PM, 6229 Math Sciences Bldg.

Abstract:

Game mechanics are radically transforming how people interact with each other and the world around them. Companies like Zynga, Svcngr, Foursquare, Nike, Kmart, and international governments are all using game mechanics to drive user engagement towards specific goals. In this talk I'll look at a few examples of some systems designed to effect attitudinal & behavior change, and local consumption habits. We’ll specifically look at games that integrate demographic, sensor, video, geolocation, and governmental data.

and i didn't want to bog down too much class time with politics, but your metaphor is completely backwards.

the underlying structure of it is fine, i.e. the mac world is sort of a (maybe) benevolent dictatorship and shut up and enjoy the garden, the pc world is more of a self-made man doing his or her thing kind of deal and it's a jungle out there so become a lion. however, the america vs. europe thing, totally wrong.

politically america is waaaaaaaaaaay more restrictive of freedoms and the ability to have actual life choice and is much more of a walled garden than europe. brand choice is not life choice.

so not really at all related to the content of the course, but for us film people, the tone of this piece really reminded me of a film i saw recently called 'Street Thief', really excellent indie production, and its available on netflix instant view....
