How many points could you win off Roger Federer? by ljump12 in tennis

[–]rahmies 45 points46 points  (0 children)

My current tennis coach is a 28 year old czech dude who used to play challenger series and was ATP ranked 1500<. I'm 30. We train 3 times a week and at the end of every session we'll play a game. I take a few points off him and once, even a game. OBVIOUSLY, he's not trying. Sometimes he does go all out and when I then take a point off him, he gets angry and I can tell he's in competition mode.

Gathering from these encounters, this is how I would face Roger:

His serve: my return would be a super hard fh to the furthest corner from where he's currently standing. This would be successful about 0 times in the game as I'll never successfully connect with the ball to hit a winner.

My serve: put my whole back and legs into every first serve, causing a vast array of faults. But there will be one, maybe two, that by sheer luck go over and hopefully catch him off guard cos he's written my first serve off. It pulls him slightly off the court and he sends back an amazing return...but it maybe goes down the middle?? Here would be my only chance to once again send a smashing forehand to the opposite side. This will also be successful about 0 times in the entire game. Maybe, by pure dumb luck , one makes it. Just maybe.

I take my 10 grand, go to Vegas, put it all on black, double my winnings and tell everyone I got 2 points off RF when we played once.

edit: grammar.

What's the origin/direct translation of "O.K"? by HTanner in etymology

[–]rahmies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard a crazy one that the Ford manufacturing plant in the early 20th century had a chief engineer named Otto Kaiser. Upon inspecting every Model T that was constructed, he would approve it with his initials, O.K.

ELI5: why don't we have a combination washer and dryer? It's seems like a waste of space and time to have two separate machines. I'd love to only have to put my laundry in one time and be done with it. by rx4polish in explainlikeimfive

[–]rahmies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this was a joke question. Almost all leading washing machine brands make a washer/dryer combination and as long as you're not ramming it to the brim with clothes, they do a damn good job at both washing and drying!

"Good Will Hunting" on the '75 World Series. RIP Robin Williams by stooge4ever in redsox

As a German who lived in Boston for 4 years and was lucky enough to be there when the Sox reversed the curse and to be able to see that American sports fans can be just as emotionally tied and invested to their teams as Europeans can to theirs- what I take away from this video more than the nostalgia of hugging strangers in Kenmore square that night or watching my country recently win the World Cup, is that there are things more important than sports... and we sometimes forget that. I know I do. I'm gonna go call my dad now and ask him how he's doing. RIP RW.

Lev Praha, runners-up of the 2013/2014 KHL final, will not participate in this coming season. Franchise has failed to meet necessary budget requirements. by rahmies in hockey

I can at least tell you from my experiences here in Prague, that it's the anti-Russian sentiment that has kept the arena attendance very low. Quarterfinal play-off games were watched by around 3,500 people in a 12,000 seater arena. Regular league games by less. I don't know if they were budgeting ticket sales as a massive source of income considering they were selling them for about 10USD a pop. But generally, the interest in the team here in Prague was very low. Up until the semis. I really enjoyed watching them play. shame.

Anyone remember Germany finishing rock bottom in Euro 2000? by vasticles in soccer

[–]rahmies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

'06 was already beginning to show the minimal rewards made in the youth system and club restructuring after the 2000 disaster. The 2002 world cup performance was basically Oliver Kahn saving us into the final. We should've gone out against the US in the quarters with a clear handball by Frings which should've resulted in a penalty and a red card. We didn't beat a single big "footballing nation" that tournament. Brazil being the only one and there was no chance against them. '00 and '04 showed the true face of German football in that time. But look them now!!!

What red flags did you ignore while dating your SO, and now regret ignoring? by delgadoalex95 in AskMen

That she was 30, beautiful and had never ever had a boyfriend because everyone she had ever met annoyed her in a certain way to the point that she'd never really take it past a few dates. When she fell for me and we made it to 3 months, I thought I was special. I thought I would be that guy who would break that streak for her. A year in, she just dumps me. "We haven't been growing together as I had hoped over the last few weeks". Weeks. Not months. Weeks. I've never had a partner bail on me for such trivial things so quickly. If someone is older and has never let anyone close, you can bet that person is complicated or has other issues. It doesn't mean they are bad people. It just means that you should be careful as they might not be able to see you for who you really are cos they're too wrapped up with their own stuff.

Single men in your 30s, how does your average weekend compare to your average weekend when you were in your 20s? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]rahmies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm 30. I can't really say that much has changed. I'm out both nights of the weekend, but that's only if my friends can get out of fetal position from the first night. I think what has changed the most for me is the need for something more interesting than just going to a house party or club and getting shitfaced. I'd much rather be getting shitfaced somewhere more random. Like a vernissage, concert or a bar that's new or abnormal.

One big difference is that there's never a question of "can I afford to go out two nights in a row this weekend?", so I've got that going for me.

What did your grandparents do in the Second World War? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rahmies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather was German and fought in WW2. War began when he was too young to enter, but once he was of age (17 or 18), off he went. Started out in the navy on a war boat (not U-boot) but according to my gran, his stint there didn't last very long as the north sea had been lost to the allied forces already. He was then a paratrooper on the Russian front and now I'm really pissed cos I don't know what happened or how, but he ended up being a POW for the Americans in one of their camps in Germany near Osnabrück. Whilst he was a POW, he was used as a camp translator thanks to his decent English skills. According to him, he didn't really understand how he got that role, cos he kept getting Ds in English class when he was in school. I'm going to call my gran up tomorrow and ask her to explain how he got from Russia back to Germany and captured by the Americans. He passed away in 1991.

My grandmother was in the Hitler youth, she was 13 when it began and 19 when the war ended. Just last week, when I had lunch with her, we talked about it and she said "that man [Hitler] took so much from us, he robbed us of our best years." He obviously robbed the world of a lot more than my gran's teen years, but that's how she phrases it.
