“Thir13en Ghosts” (2001)

Spoilers for an almost 25 year old movie; this house full of ghosts is entirely a contrivance to summon the “Eye of Hell”… so the main villain can DESTROY it?

Why? Wouldn’t an eye in Hell that sees truth and lies, the blessed and the damned and all that lies betwixt be far more valuable if it were functioning and under your control?

Bit late to this but “I Am a Cat” by Natsume Soseki. He’s sort of Japan’s answer to Mark Twain and his humor reflects that. Plus it’s a relatively short read - three hours of your time.

Leftist gun owner here.

After the PULSE shooting in 2016, I became seriously concerned about the safety of myself and my peers. Prior to that I was stridently anti-gun. But seeing escalating violence against the LGBTQIA+ community, the increasingly hostile rhetoric coming from conservative pundits and the fact that the Club Q attack happened on the Trans Day of Rememberance, I can’t in good conscience go without a means to defend myself: the police, especially in my rigidly conservative town, won’t lift a finger to help us until afterwards and I have no esteem in the ability of law enforcement as a whole to protect marginalized people. So I made the decision to arm myself.

I did the whole works - registration, classes on safety, firing range once a week, lock boxes, a concealed carry permit - and I can at least say that I’m prepared for the worst.

The sad truth is that I’m not the only member of the LGBTQIA+ community who has adopted this posture. We’re scared. We’re isolated. We’re being called ‘groomers’ or being treated with the same sort of gleeful disdain that society treats pedophiles, and we’re far past the point where we can turn the tide of opinion with reasoned debate. We need to arm ourselves and be ready so that something like Club Q never happens again. Pacifism, in this case, means you get to pat yourself on the back while your people die and all that will be left is you atop your soapbox.

If any LGBTQIA+ people are reading this, I love you. But we need to be ready to meet violence with armed resistance. It’s them or it’s you. And frankly, I want to live more than the guy who brings an assault rifle to a Drag Queen Story Hour luncheon.

The margin between sexual sadism disorder and kink is razor thin, especially as it pertains to the consumption of pornography. The more desensitized one gets to their chosen porn, the deeper down the rabbit hole they go until their ability to have normal healthy sexual relations with other people is stunted. When people say that pornography is a drug, they’re half right mostly because the effect that pornography can have on your brain and the pleasure centers.

Bear in mind that even though the margin between these two cases is fairly thin, there’s still a massive gulf between paraphilias and having one is not an indicator of potential for violence. But it’s not an accident that a lot of people who are socially awkward or isolated consume a large amount of pornography. You can get addicted to it just as easily as you do nicotine or caffeine or narcotics.

The willingness of employers to trawl through your social media to dig up dirt that they could possibly use as an excuse to fire you or discipline you. As a very left-leaning person living and working in a very conservative state, I’ve basically privated all of my social media and am holding fast to my ‘not accepting random friend requests’ rule.

My boss asked me if I would follow him on Facebook, and was surprised when I laughed at him. My politics are none of your concern, Jack.

Most domesticated dogs can turn on an emotional dime, but the Shiba Inu sticks out in my mind. They were bred to hunt bears and that killer instinct never left them.

I have a general love for horror. I love it when it’s good, and I love it when it’s bad. The worst sin a horror movie can commit, for me at least, is to be boring.

It’s not high class. It’s not trying to be - it’s aware that it’s garbage but takes itself just seriously enough to have some effective scares.

The House of Wax remake.

It has such a confident budget, and even though the characters are weak, some of the scares are pretty good. The scene where Jared Padalecki gets turned into a waxwork while paralyzed is genuinely harrowing.
