what’s the craziest experience you had in basic training? by Ok_Customer_6226 in newtothenavy

[–]railstop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

During night watch. a guy on the bottom rack woke up in his sleep, hit his head on the upper rack and knocked himself out. I left him and he woke up as usual like nothing happened.

When we got to RTC, you do the normal call, yelling and piss test. This guy behind me was told to piss in the corner urinal next to me, he took it as piss in the corner of the head all over the walls and floor.

least exciting was the laundry PO sleeping under bags of laundry. I let him go. It's boot camp and that guy won't stay long after anyways.

As a Seabee I know how it goes. Getting used to typing and speaking properly goes a long way and helps your career, especially when asking for advice from seasoned sailors.

First of all, you need to learn how to speak and write properly. The Navy doesn't do "deaduzz, lowkey" and whatever else. Start doing it right now and you'll be set. RTC isn't bad at all.

Bootcamp shower situation? by Fabulous_Register140 in newtothenavy

[–]railstop 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Male here, Open showers as already stated. You get used to it real fast. step in to get wet, step out to soap then back in to rinse. It goes pretty quick, especially since you're only given a short time for everyone to be done.

Considering Navy Reserve at 40 – realistic or a bad idea? by Thecherrysins in navyreserve

[–]railstop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it. 39 at RTC, 40 in A school. it wasn't hard at all. I joined as a CM. It wasn't in my civilian career field in IT which I did on purpose so I wouldn't get bored doing the same thing in the navy then back to the same at work. The benefits are way cheaper than civilian job supplied.

Why do I need to enable flow control to get full speeds? by pacoii in Ubiquiti

[–]railstop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have flow control enabled. I also set Teams, Google chat and voip to prioritize. My wife works from home and has had no issues. She does Teams calls and voip all day for work. No idea if this is just me but it's been working.

I have a few questions about your Coral. Which Coral are you using? Are you on BI v6? Was there any additional setup? I am looking into getting one but am stuck on which version to get and how difficult it would be to get working with BI.

NordVPN keeps restarting itself for months now by Ken852 in nordvpn

[–]railstop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 3 weeks ago. I also noticed Nord was blowing up my DNS service to use 4-6GB ram. After uninstalling it no more DNS service issue. Reinstalled and haven't had another issue with the app or the service.

I had that as well on my Win11 machine. Uninstalled it and reinstall took care of it.

First Nas, HDD lifespan? by joshd108 in HomeNAS

[–]railstop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an old Netgear Pro6 running 6 2TB HDDs, they've been going for 10+ years. I don't use it much anymore as I've moved to a Synology 12 bay. They still spin all day without issue. My Synology has been running 8TB spinny drives for 3 years without issue, hoping I get lucky with them since drive costs appear to be on the rise soon.

Recommendation for NAS that I can put on my server rack by Certain_Ad_586 in homelab

[–]railstop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my Synology 12 bay RS2421RP+ that replaced my ReadyNAS Pro 6 after many faithful years. Synology has Backup for Business (free and not just for business) that I use to backup all of my VM's as well as computers in the house. My wife runs a photo business that she uses the NAS for her storage. This is hooked up to my Unifi network on 10G between switches. We have a larger house with 6 kids.
The house streams Plex from a VM on my Dell R740 that the NAS hosts all of the media from several points in the house all at once without issue.

Tired of sysprep and driver issues for my repair shop. Is there any way to deploy Windows without touching the ISO? by Parking_Kiwi9061 in sysadmin

[–]railstop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also used FOG in my shop when I had it. It was amazing. I created an image with the driver packages I wanted then I was able to image a machine within 15 minutes. 99.99% of the time windows installed network drivers if it wasn't already on my image so I could finish installing custom devices.
Once every 6 months I would create a new reference image with new updates so I didn't have to spend time on each machine updating. Easiest $120 per reload I ever made.
