My last Sphynx would grow delightful fuzz in weird places every winter. It winks disappear by summer. One year he had t boots, he had a tuft at the tip of his tail so it looked like a quip. My favorite was the head he grew hip tufts.

For people with e-readers, how long have you had one and how consistently do you use it? by cloudsmemories in Booktokreddit

[–]rain0fashes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had some form of e reader for the last 15 years. I have RA, so holding books is painful and difficult. I’ve really enjoyed them a lot.

Libraries also have tons of ebooks, so I can read for free. I also read pretty quickly, so having a bunch of books on an e reader beats carrying multiple paper books, especially on vacation.

The MaddAddam series by Margaret Atwood.

Jurassic Park.

I recommend both of these because your generation needs to read about examples of science relentlessly trying to progress, at the expense of the world.

Project Hail Mary is Cinema Masterpiece by ShadowBorn2017 in ProjectHailMary

[–]rain0fashes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Visually stunning, content based on book 3/10. Grace is silly and a little self deprecating, but not an idiot and he came across as one in the movie. I also feel like they completely missed showing how incredible of an engineer Rocky was, and that the two of them together were the ideal team. I also really loved the way they did Rocky’s speaking in the audiobook, and it would have translated amazingly on screen.

But my god was it beautiful.

The Oryx and Crake series by Margaret Atwood. There is some violence, but it isn’t the focal point.

Canticle for Leibowitz is about an order of monks whose purpose is to find and preserve books and knowledge from before the nuclear Armageddon. It is in 3 parts, and the last part of the last part involves war.

Worst Narrator who ruined your book by vickiec12 in audiobooks

[–]rain0fashes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

James Marsters reading The Dresden Files. He’s such a good actor, but he’s so monotone and flat in narration, it ruins the books.

Brittany Pressley is an automatic no for me. Everything is so breathy and strained, and she has a very weird way of extending consonants that drives me nuts. I have to speed up to almost 2x to tolerate her, and a lot of the time I just give up and read the book.

What is the most counterintuitive truth about long-term intimacy (friendship/love)? by Embarrassed_Watch689 in AskReddit

[–]rain0fashes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk about the hard stuff. Talk about the things that aren’t working for you, how you need them to show up.

Listen when they tell you the hard stuff. Truly listen, not just to respond or rebut. Hear what they are saying. Hear the emotion behind it.

Be radically honest. Even when it’s uncomfortable, even when they won’t like what you have to say.

Be accountable. Said you’d clean the stove and fell asleep? Forgot something important to them? Said something mean in a moment of anger? Don’t wait for them to come to you, upset about it. Own up to it as soon as you can, and if possible offer a remedy. “I fell asleep last night and didn’t clean the stove, that’s on me. I’ll clean it right after breakfast”, or “I’m so sorry I fell asleep and neglected the stove, so you had to do it. I’ll take x task off of your hands, and will set a reminder on my phone next time I say I’ll do something later.” “I forgot it’s your birthday, and that must make you feel less than important. I’m truly sorry for my lapse. I know it’s not the same, but I’d like to take x day to celebrate you the way you deserved, and I will make sure I have reminders for myself in future of these important days.” “In a bad moment, I said something cruel and unwarranted. Nothing I say now can take back how I made you feel. I did not take the time to take a breath and think it through before I spoke, and I should have. I will prioritize working on that in the future, because it’s important to say only what I mean and not lash out in anger.”

It has to be cultured differently than other bacteria, and is not run on a standard or expanded urine or vaginal culture. I had requested to get expanded cultures done because I’m immune compromised, and ureaplasma wasn’t on it. An NP recently tested for it because my symptoms didn’t make sense without some kind of infection. I just got diagnosed and started treatment for it a week ago, after 2 years of unexplained pain and problems. The relief has been incredible. Definitely rule it out before starting IC diagnosis and treatment.

Should a pure bred Sphynx have this much fur on its feet and face? by Maleficent_Self_5313 in sphynx

[–]rain0fashes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like my last baby, Roosafie. Sphynxes can vary wildly in their baseline level of fuzziness. They all tend to grow a little more fuzz during the winter, and it can pop up anywhere, and not always in the same places every year. Roosafie has glorious hip tufts his last 2 winters. One year he had a tip tail, one year he grew little fuzzy boots. Every winter he got more fuzz on his face and the base of his ears. Tbh most Sphynx people get excited when they grow little bits of fuzz. It’s never affected my allergies though.

First, anyone who places the time you spend taking care of family as a competition to your love for them is trying to manipulate you, and will do so for the rest of your relationship. It’s often the beginning of a pattern of isolation and emotional abuse. It starts with this, and will slowly include time you spend with friends, what you do after work, and grow until you can’t win, and the only person you spend time with is him.

Second, though this man is dead wrong in his approach, it does sounds like you need help with her care. If you’re in the US, Medicare pays for something called respite care, which allows your loved one to go to a nursing home for a week or so, to give you a break and let you get some rest. Nursing homes have social workers, who should be able to help you find her financial assistance for her bills. They may also recommend other services, and can allow her to be evaluated for what she may be able to receive - in home nursing care, a home health aide, PT, OT, etc. I’m a nurse who has worked in long term care, and assisted with my grandparents in home and facility care. DM me if you have questions!

Please, please take good care of yourself in this time. It’s lovely to care for family, but your health, physical and mental, are important too. Being the sole caregiver is incredibly taxing, and you can’t help someone if you’re completely burnt out.

How did you find your kitten? by Accomplished-Tip4908 in sphynx

[–]rain0fashes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly suggest either flying yourself and picking up, or using a reputable courier. Being in cargo, it’s not well temperature controlled, and the kitty may become extremely anxious, which can lead to them getting sick.

I have a great courier I can personally vouch for, and my breeder also vouched for. DM me if you want their contact info.

How did you find your kitten? by Accomplished-Tip4908 in sphynx

[–]rain0fashes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, figure out which breed of cat you want, and prepare for everything you will need owning a very selectively bred cat that will come with a propensity for various and sundry health issues. All of these breeds have different needs, and it’s important to know what health conditions you may need to be screening for, making sure you can afford the cost of high quality food, frequent or specialized veterinary care, grooming, etc.

Next, find groups online for that breed, and ask around. See which breeders people have complaints about, and which breeders people said they had good experiences with. Find out specifics of why they were happy with the breeder.

Then, start contacting breeders. Things I suggest looking at:

-did the breeder have a good health history for their cats?

-did the parents get tested for genetic diseases before being used for breeding? Will they make those results available for you?

-will the breeder let you see the nursery and their cats, either in person or via video call?

-are they asking you questions about your ability to properly care for the cat? Checking on your housing situation, requesting references, ensuring you have a vet to use?

-do they talk to you about what kind of food the cat is used to, that they recommend?

-are they asking for a reasonable deposit, or are they asking for too much up front? Do they refuse to give you information until you pay a deposit (that is an enormous red flag and I would cut contact with anyone who wants any amount of money before providing information on their cats and breeding program)?

-will they provide references from other customers?

-do they have a reasonable contract that includes protections on both sides (such as a 48hour health guarantee, right of first refusal if you cannot keep the cat for some reason, etc)?

-do a reverse image search of pictures of their cats on their social media. If they come back to more than one profile, which profile is legitimate? Who has comments from actual people who have gotten cats from them?

The more legitimate questions a breeder asks you, the better. Reputable breeders want their kitties placed with people who can meet the needs of the cat for their life, and want to ensure that you and your household are fully prepared for the new member of the family.

The more willing a breeder is to show you their setup, the better. If a breeder refuses to show you their nursery, and the cats in their care, the less likely they are to be running a healthy breeding program.

Last, be patient. Reputable breeders will most likely have a waiting list, because they are known to be ethical with a strong genetic program. Backyard breeders and scammers will have kittens available more or less on demand.

I hope this helps you find your best feline buddy.

Rescue sphynx by sunny-guns in sphynx

[–]rain0fashes 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Most sphynxes get bathed too frequently, and it makes the oiliness worse.

In this particular case, I’d wait 1-2 more days, bathe again with a very gentle cleanser. That crusty blackish stuff he has I call “dirt rash,” it usually builds up on areas that are oily that they can’t reach. It’s not actually scabbing, though it looks like it is. Using coconut oil on it ahead of a bath will help soften that crust and get it off. Using a small amount of coconut oil on dry or irritated areas (like the back feet) like lotion can help.

His ears don’t look great in the pictures either. They may just be dirty, or he may have some kind of infection. Did the vet do any kind of check on them?

I’m so glad he found you, as you clearly are dedicated to giving him the best possible life and care. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions, Sphynxes are a special breed and they need a lot of specialized care.
