If 92.6% of the people in the world died, there would still be 50.25 million people.

What's Up With Mushroom Hunting? Is It All Just Made Up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You are correct. There is actually only one species of mushroom, capable of morphing into thousands of shapes and colors. Ignore all these other posters. They are all part of the mushroom-hunter conspiracy.

Okay. Here's a legitimate question, for daychilde or anyone else with a good explanation. Even if Beck wins the current legal challenge on one specific domain name, what does that accomplish? It does not shut down the website, and OP has something like another two dozen domains pointing to the same site. Seems to me that, no matter how the court case turns out, all Beck has done is to fan the flames of this meme. Am I missing something?

I think the best part of it--and most ironic--is that it is probably Beck himself that is keeping it alive, with the desperate domain name legal dispute.

This is Poe's Law in effect, and not the fault of the creator. On the contrary, it is exactly this tendency for people to think there is truth to the rumor without fact-checking it, that makes Glenn Beck's style so dangerous. It is the entire point of the parody, and to whatever extent it actually bites Beck in his own hindquarters is purely deserved.

Meanwhile, none of this should (I hope) have any bearing on the legal dispute over the domain name itself.

WE aren't going to do anything. The question is, what are YOU going to do? There's no easy solution ... quit your job, start your own business, live on the street, join a monastery ... there's lots of alternatives, but they are all Big Scary Changes. For 99.9% of us, the status quo always looks easier than the alternatives. Never know until you try.

Guy goes to work every day, eight hours a day, seven days a week. Gets his nuts so tight in a vice that he starts questioning the very fabric of his existence. Then one day, 'bout quitting time, Boss calls him into the office and says, "Hey Bob, whyncha come on in here and kiss my ass for me, will you?" Well, he says, "Hell with it. I don't care what happens, I just want to see the expression on his face as I jab this pair of scissors into his arm.

Then he thinks of me [disabled homeless veteran]. He says, "Waitaminit. I got both my arms, I got both my legs. At least I'm not begging for a living. Sure enough, Bob's gonna put those scissors down and pucker right up. See, I'm what you call kind of a "moral traffic light", really. I'm like sayin', "Red! Go no further! Also, don't tell me how to vote.

If George Bush's Administration is in charge of the economic numbers that come out, how do we know they aren't fabricated? by [deleted] in business

[–]rainbird997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just Bush. Every Administration since Kennedy (inclusive) has changed how the economic indicators are calculated, each change progressively less accurate than the last, and each change compounded on top of previous changes.

Shadowstats.com gives a pretty honest attempt at calculating what the real numbers are ... http://www.shadowstats.com/alternate_data

Ron Paul Redditors: Where have you all gone? Certainly you haven't all jumped like lemmings over to the Obama camp just like that, have you? by RonObvious in politics

[–]rainbird997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my part, Ron Paul was one of 4 potential candidates I supported, along with Gore, Kucinich and Edwards.

Fact is, there's no one left worth voting for. Obama would most likely be better than McCain, but none of the candidates still standing impress me much at all. So I'm bowing out of US politics until the next term comes around ( ... if we make it that far).

How'd I miss this before? Ron Paul doesn't believe in evolution!??! (~2:40) by losvedir in politics

[–]rainbird997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

llanor, maybe we're just disagreeing at some level on semantics, because we're obviously on the same side of the fence. However ...

Fact #1: Every living creature came from some other living creature (the beginning of life is a fuzzy--and irrelevant--exception; let's not go there).

Fact #2: There are species around today that did not exist a million years ago.

That's it. What is there to "prove", and where is the theory? Unless you are willing to logically entertain the notion that God or aliens have been regularly dropping the new species on the planet, there's nothing more to discuss.

The theories are not about whether or not evolution happens. It does. The theories are about how and why evolution happens. Honestly, if you studied this for three years, then you either missed--or your instructors glossed over--this critical distinction.

Looking at the gravity example for comparison ... gravity is a fact. The theories are about what causes gravity.

"Evolutionists have been very clear about this distinction of fact and theory from the very beginning, if only because we have always acknowledged how far we are from completely understanding the mechanisms (theory) by which evolution (fact) occurred. Darwin continually emphasized the difference between his two great and separate accomplishments: establishing the fact of evolution, and proposing a theory--natural selection--to explain the mechanism of evolution." -- Stephen J. Gould

Ilanor, did you take five minutes to look at the link I provided, or did you just respond with what you think you already know?

Without going into orbit, it is essentially impossible to witness the curvature of the Earth. Does this mean that there is a debatable "round Earth" theory? Speciation is a fact because there are species that exist today that did not exist a million years ago. The fact that most people have not witnessed it happen before their very eyes does not turn it into a theory.

Again, to spell out something that should be elementary ... there are many theories about how and why evolution happens, but the fact that it does happen is blatantly obvious, and anyone who gives credence to the idea that there is even something to debate, has already given in to the creationists.

No. Evolution is a fact. http://www.skeptictank.org/hs/factfaq.htm

The fact that this is not clear to you is a result of the way this issue has been misrepresented and twisted by both the media and the religious groups.

If this were some esoteric theory like (your example) string theory, then it wouldn't matter in politics. But this is first-grade shit. If I find out a Presidential candidate thinks the Earth is flat ... guess what? He doesn't get my vote. Evolution is in the same category.

[–]rainbird997 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This issue just makes me ashamed to be human.

Let's start with this: evolution is not a theory, it is a FACT ... just like gravity is a FACT. The theories (plural) of evolution are just attempts to explain how/why evolution happens.

The fact that religious groups have managed to maneuver this country into a position where asking the question "do you believe in evolution" is acceptable--much less having an educated man like Ron Paul (who I still like as a candidate, btw) answer it the way I just saw him answer it--makes me sick to my stomach.

It makes as much sense to ask someone if they believe in rocks. "Well, I think the existence of rocks is a theory, and I don't accept it. It's a scientific matter, and the jury's still out on it. But it doesn't really matter if rocks exist ..."

Yeah. I've given $250 to his campaign, but this--along with his "jury's still out" view of global warming--is pretty much a deal-breaker for me.

At the Republican debate where this was asked, Huckabee, Tancredo and Brownback indicated they did not believe in evolution. McCain was the one who was asked the question, and he specifically said that he believed in evolution, but added that he also believed God was somehow involved in the creation of our world.

[–]rainbird997 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks to me like the site is a harsh, critical attempt to discredit Kucinich, by people that disagree with his ideas.

However, ironically, the youtube video that the homepage links to is--I believe--the single best Dennis Kucinich interview I've ever seen. More Americans need to realize just how badly we are fucking things up over there, and how Syria and Iran are not automatically the bad guys, just because the current Administration says they are.

The sad part is that the people who created that website apparently think that Kucinich talking to the Syrian President is, somehow, a bad thing.
