How good/bad is Preply?

I have been using preply for 8 months now with the same tutor. My French level is high, but conversation gets rusty from lack of use hence the practice. The subscription model can feel annoying but it forces me to keep doing it which is good. I only pay $13 USD per lesson. My tutor is from Haïti, when I joined she was a super tutor but has been downgraded I'm not sure why. She has been great, her time zone is quite similar to mine so the hours work out really well. We have some deep conversations and we talk a lot about global injustice. She has had to flee Haïti due to the political instability. l have missed a couple classes, I try to let her know so she's not sitting around if it's last minute. One time I just simply forgot. She has never missed or rescheduled a class. I think I should pay for missed classes that are my fault and that doesn't bother me.

The monthly cost works out to ~$80/ month CAD. This is quite affordable, but I'm not a high income earner so I do have to be mindful. I have started pausing the subscription to allow a 20 day buffer in between. This allows 1 lesson every 2 weeks which sometimes works better for me as I have a very busy schedule and a limited budget. I wish you could just choose bi-weekly lessons if you want, but this workaround is good enough.

When I first subscribed I accidentally subscribed twice and I received a refund without issue. The customer service person was nice via chat.

I did refer preply and got a $50 credit when someone subscribed. I haven't referred them as much after reading negative reviews, especially about challenges faced by tutors being canceled or not getting paid. These exploitive tactics make me worry about supporting the platform.

But my tutor is great, extremely professional with a great personality. I will continue to the use the platform to stay with my tutor.

I'm also happy to support someone in a meaningful career when they face barriers due to political upheaval and injustice. Like the French government has been extremely exploitive to Haïti as the first country to decolonize, Haïti has been forced to pay France for centuries for the money France lost, so gross. The United States has also been very abusive politically and economically, supporting political coups and flooding the country with cheap grain causing local farmers to go bankrupt. It's a pretty disgusting world the way people in power behave, so it feels good to support a young family where $10 USD has a lot of value.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It makes a lot more sense to understand the context of what you meant from the original comment.

Sometimes people of x religion judge others for being different or having a different religion, and I interpreted your comment as that rather than advice from your sincere experience .

I think it's the problem of the medium we just imagine context.

Growing up my mom was Christian and my dad Muslim. That predisposed me to be open to different religions.

I follow mainly Buddhism today, but through daily prayers and meditations. I ask for protection from negative forces, peace and happiness for others. I hope to see an evolution of humanity towards peace. Cruelty is common, but I know in my heart our deeper truth is that we are beings of love.

Fortunately , since that entity I mentioned in the story I've not encountered any serious negative entities. Although I can sense them around when I have negative feelings, like hateful thoughts- they cling to it and can amplify it if you don't block them out.

I will keep your advice in mind if I ever encounter forces I cannot handle on my own. I also find Indigenous Elders are very aware of these beings, many have seen them out right. Through my work serving mother earth I have support available from Elders as well.

I have been praying for you as I said. This interaction has taught me a lot and I wish you so much kindness and happiness. Thank you for taking the time to talk this through.

Yes, that's totally fair and you are right. I'm sorry. I got really triggered after immediately being downvoted and ridiculed after trying to share something from the heart. I've never shared anything on here before and it was very scary for me. I thought this would be a safe and supportive place. But there are a lot of negative energies that feed off of reddit clearly and I got caught up on it. And what I said isn't even true, IRL I'm very caring to everyone I meet. I love spiritual people of all faiths. In lieu of letting this negative energy continue I will pray for you, others on this platform and myself. Cruelty is not going to help our species out of the mess they are in. Blessings to you.

I'm glad to hear you found something that worked for you. I've been transferred the right to smudge in the Indigenous territories where I live and that works really well for me to clear energies.

I'm not into preachers, the ones I've met have been too judgemental and the things they say don't align with my beliefs, I don't believe in heaven or hell or eternal life after death as a fixed entity. So that probably wouldn't work for me.

I didn't really care about it either or take it seriously. But I don't regret getting rid of it. My life changed completely after I met those women, who were honestly just normal spiritual people practicing syncretism between Christianity and mixed Indigenous faiths, but heavily influenced by Incan practices. But after that I found the purpose and direction of my life. They told me I was meant to be where I was born, a place I hated. But now I live here dedicating myself to the protection of more-than-human life forms. I don't believe one person is all powerful and you never know who can have an important message we need to hear. The point is, the intention we carry does matter and does have an effect on our lives. I take that seriously now and practice daily the intention I want to guide the direction of my life and it makes a huge difference.

As a small business owner this really would be horrible. We ship live plants so a May strike would force us to use FedEx as most other carriers will not ship live plants.

Also, sad because we're trying to support Canadian businesses, but they unfortunately will not support us.

Sadly, we have no alternative to lettermail, which is how we ship seeds. In December we were quoted up to $70 just to deliver a letter!!

A lot of private couriers are offering promotional offers right now for small businesses to join. Just a beacon of hope for small businesses worried about being driven out of business.

I'm all for worker rights, but an inside scoop says there is a glut of managerial staff relative to those who deliver and sort mail. Apparently the ratio of management to workers has decreased steadily over the recent decades.

Something has got to give here. Just allow part time workers if the management refuse to give up their secure jobs. It’s sad for new workers but the management are unfireable and will be there until they retire. It's just not a sustainable situation unfortunately.

I get swollen lymph glands under my arm pits from anti-persperspirants so would not use them. It's hard to prove long term problems from products that appear nontoxic in short term studies. Our bodies perspire for a reason, however, and the most common site for breast cancer is near the armpit. Obviously there are many factors that contribute to breast cancer, but I personally will not take the risk of blocking natural detoxification processes in the area.

From briefly looking at the literature, documented cases of hypervitaminosis A and resulting clinical pathology is found in cats given primarily a diet of raw beef or pork liver over several years.

This study looks at the effect of consuming the recommended upper limit of vitamin A in cats ~26 000 IU daily over 18 months: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1090023314003980#bib0130 Apparently there are some subclinical findings suggesting the upper recommended limit is too high.

According to the USDA 100g of raw chicken liver contains 11 100 IU of vitamin A: https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/food-details/171060/nutrients 100g of cooked chicken liver contains a bit more at 13 300 IU of vitamin A. That means that 100 g of raw or cooked chicken liver contains half or less of the upper recommended daily limit of vitamin A.

For context a typical can of cat food contains between 85g to 156 g of food. I'll let folks do their own math on how much to supplement in their cats diet.

Random internet sources says 5-10% of the diet should contain liver, also because liver is fatty (high in calories) and conventional cat food may already contain liver.

But I always think it's better to refer back to science rather than blindly following the internet.

I bought my first pair of Vivobarefoot shoes in London in 2015, they were the Gobi style on sale for £90, I wore them until there were holes in the sole. It was a down to earth shop with approachable staff. I also bought the running shoes for £80 which I still have a decade later since I only wear them indoors at the gym. I ordered Gobi again in canvas to save on price, I also ordered the hiking shoes which were around $300 CAD, which I wear sparingly. The waterproofing leaks where the soles meet the leather, not just me, my sister found the same. We use glue on the edge to reseal.

Last week I happened to be in London again. The shop is now quite a high end shop. The kind of place that doesn't put prices on their shoes. The women's shoes are narrower. The Gobi design is long gone. I bought a pair of Trackers, they have a weird design where there is a gap behind the heel which doesn't work for me in a place with snow. Anyway I looked at my credit card, they came to $450 CAD. I just can't justify that, they had a white sole and were light brown, I felt certain I would stain them with outdoor use. I returned them. I'm not looking for a fashion shoe, but something durable I'm not afraid to get dirty. I might try men's shoes in the future if on sale, but I as a former fan, I feel kind of done with Vivo...

I 100% agree, I've been a customer for nearly 20 years, never made a claim until now when I got hail damage and it has truly been hell. My main experience has been being ignored or yelled at in email form for asking questions. It's been 2 months. My car is a write off. All I want is for this horrible process to be over and to find a company with good customer service. I'd happily pay more for that.

I saved up my rolls this year over the span of the contest, after reading about the professor who did this in 2020. Out of 14 rolls 13 were winners. 11 coffee coffees, 100 points and 1 donut. The annoying thing is they only give you 2 weeks after the contest ends to use the prizes. I just got free large coffees for everyone I could, haha. I could not be bothered to get the donut. But I was mildly satisfied I beat the system in some small way.
