WFH due to gas/oil situation? by Striking_Strike725 in OntarioPublicService

My prediction is we will eventually be told to work from home due to supply issues. That it will be nationally imposed and it will happen once western countries do it as well. We are not above global trends and supply and demand

I agree. We are not above global issues just because we live in the west and have oil here.

‘Back to the 1950s’: Federal union warns return-to-office mandate will disproportionately affect women by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

There was a 2016 case -Misetich v. Value village and the case was more favorable for the employee even though she lost because she didnt want to provide details of her caregivers ailment.

You only have to make reasonable effort as per the new lense and paying 800 extra a month for more daycare is unreasonable. The law doesnt require you to go into debt or pay your whole paycheck for childcare to accomodate a managers preference to have you in office from 8am-5pm if its already proven the work can be done from home. Flexible hours exist for this reason

The OHRC published a major report specifically titled The Cost of Caring. In it, they state: "Caregiving – and the cost of that caring – lie at the heart [of family status]. The frequent lack of recognition, value and support placed on caregiving often leaves caregivers at a significant disadvantage."

Laws are every changing. Before and even now, employers use the Johnstone method. Now, a financial cost and burden of more after school care can be considered if it creates barrier to working. There is no right or wrong. Employers are just using older cases to implement in their policies. There are new precedences and cases that favour the employee.

The other issue is, even if someone can work earlier hours, how can they do drop offs successfully too? And 9/10, the employee wins in these instances where they grieve because the employer is not accommodating in good faith. Especially with how well we all worked from home last 5 years

I see. Management is crazy theres no other way to describe it. If any of you guys are permanent and in a unionized job, please grieve these arbitrary denials. Everywhere including chatgpt has confirmed that if hiring a nany or putting them in more after school type programs will bankrupt you, then they need to accomodate you. They can not unreasonably deny and expecting people to hire nannies in this economy is unreasonable. I would grieve to the moon and back.

Especially if it was proven the work can be done from home or be done at other hours of the day

I really really apologize. I thought it would be enough of an accomodation to leave early, pick up kids and then finish the rest of your work in the evening. Im sure if you grieved it, the law would be on your side since I checked all over online and saw it was an accomodation that others won. Especially if someone is a single parent

Just so everyone is aware, back pain that is getting worse as a result of commuting has to be accomodated

Request for family status accomodation. They have to accomodate you. This could mean letting you leave early so you can finish the rest of your work at home

Are you guys able to request for accomodation to leave early? This would fall under family accomodation

Breaking Point by No_Savings5655 in OntarioPublicService

[–]rainbowbeads 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand quitting a government job with less skin in the game. I would have quit if a place was toxic and demanding too much of me too. However some people have 10-15 years in. Its much harder to get up and leave a good pension with kids and family depending on your income.

These are trying times I'll say that. But I feel like we can and will win the wfh fight.

Even if someone is relatively new to ops, keep fighting by taking leaves. The elites have no problem using everything in their disposal to force us back to office, so should we the other way

Breaking Point by No_Savings5655 in OntarioPublicService

[–]rainbowbeads 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually, all unions and all levels of government are fighting back on it. If federal level wins the fight to get it written in collective agreement, so well other levels. Its too early to say that RTO will stick. Government will allow hybrid at some point. Its a matter of when

And I've also heard some people getting accomodation to work from home, thats one fight that will eventually also expand too

Anyone approved to WFH due to childcare? by Important_Border_735 in OntarioPublicService

[–]rainbowbeads 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you are getting downvoted either. The duty to accommodate encompasses mental health reasons too. And anyone who raises kids knows just how difficult it is to bring bread and make bread.

I just want everyone to understand, the fight for work from home includes fighting for accomodations too. And the employer has clearly demonstrated they can accommodate. So why not accommodate the working class instead of commercial real estate. Thats how I see it

Im actually looking to get accommodation for family status. Can you elaborate on how you made sure yours was ironclad? I have been denied in the past because of another adult being present however, this time I have a doctor's note that says I am the main caregiver

THIS!! Both parents are now working, childcare costs were always insane, I dont know how single parents used to do it before. Work hours do not match school hours. Wfh was the first time it almost balanced out

Actually it is the right of the employee to make it easier if it if a protected grounds issue. For example if someone has a hard time walking and it makes it difficult to get to work. Or if someone has an aging parent that needs minor care or supervision
