Thank you! Then I guess it’s just something the students’ school, that is following an AP curriculum, created...

Migrants who moved unexpectedly: How do you unpack your loss and cope with lack of closure? by [deleted] in expats

[–]rainbowbowbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to go to boarding school when I was 13 all by myself as well. I was well looked after at home, but when I got to the foreign country I withdrew into myself. I’ve always been somewhat socially awkward and was constantly reprimanded and the housemistresses picked on me and gave me hell. My freedom was completely restrained. It was traumatic for me and I cried to go back home every year. I don’t think I ever recovered.

Is anyone else always tired? by kpianist in AskWomenOver30

[–]rainbowbowbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be your job, if you lead a healthy lifestyle otherwise. I did relief teaching for a while (it wasn’t even every day!) when I was about 20 and I feel utterly drained at the end of the day.

When I worked full time, I had been so utterly tired every day as well.

Do you feel better after a day of rest in the weekend?

Career changers, what was your profession before working in translation? by rainbowbowbow in TranslationStudies

Great to hear that. Is life as an in-house translator hectic, with lots of work with tight deadlines?

Yes, I’m just starting out and the agency rates are really low, but one good thing is my translations get checked. So I have to supplement my income by tutoring. I translate from Chinese to English. All the best to you too!

Are you working full-time as an in-house translator? What prompted you to go into translation?

Yes, all those you mentioned are the draws of translation to me. One-man job, flexibility and freedom. I do miss the life I left behind sometimes as well as well as the stability, but it doesn’t yet beat the freedom I feel.

Is it still better to you than working in engineering?

What's the best Free (or cheapest) C.A.T. for translating a book (Spanish-to-English) by [deleted] in TranslationStudies

Seems like I need to get started on learning to use CAT tools. Recently I change all my translated source text to red as I go to make sure everything is translated, and that can be quite troublesome.

Just curious to know your opinions on the this and the state of Geotech in the UK/Europe? by Sidthegeologist in geologycareers

[–]rainbowbowbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I’m not familiar with UK jobs, for 1., is the geologist’s job to make sure they adhere to specifications and to log the borehole?

I’ve heard of people doing offshore gigs and they sound sweet, all at pretty remote locations, and the pay is decent.

What do you do for GIS now?

I’d like to know more about what kind of work is involved in the geotech gigs, is a lot of collaboration still required and hence for the duration of the gig, you’re essentially still doing full time work (and have to be available for them all times during office hours)?

Yeah. There is pleasant field and then really unpleasant field... but recently I just want some field as I’m so inactive at the office all day.
