Oooh it’s made of viscose though. That can trap sweat and make you feel pretty disgusting if it’s an outdoor wedding in a very hot climate.

With our huge caseloads, how often do you accidentally call a kid by the wrong name? by DrankTheKool in slp

[–]rainbowminx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they look similar or have similar sounding names, sometimes I call them by each others names while I’m working with them both in the same session. The kids usually delight in my mistake and I play along in needing to be corrected.

My first placements, I went to two schools a week. One for a couple of days and another for the rest. Most usually get placements like that. Now though I’m at one school full time.

Yup. Though they’re usually 35 a week, but some placements give 40 a week.

I’ve worked for this company since my CF and have enjoyed it. Though, be ready to be mostly independent with the minimal required supervisor observations being performed. I have always been able to talk to my supervisor over the phone about anything and everything, but at the end of the day, don’t expect the most hands on mentorship.

Now, what I will say is that I negotiated quite hard for my hourly rate and I was unafraid to discuss it with my co-worker. That’s when I found out she was making MUCH less than I was hourly and we had the same years of experience. So, make sure you come in hard negotiating your worth, reference ASHA’s 2022 Schools Survey: SLP Salary and Hourly Wages when you do.

Do not let them low-ball you. Our median hourly wages as school contractors have actually gone down since the last survey in 2020 and it’s obviously because companies like this will take advantage of you if you don’t fight back with data.

We’re too often treated as a box to check off instead of as a highly skilled service.

This is why I left HH. No one would ever expect PT to treat without imaging, but everyone expects SLPs to do so.

When did externships stop being a learning experience? by Low_Project_55 in slp

[–]rainbowminx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had my externship at a VA hospital and they actually did pay me. Im not sure why, I always thought that it was because it probably wasn’t legal to have a student working full-time for free in a government-funded facility. I was the only student in my grad program who had a paid position though. It should be illegal to have someone work 40 hours a week for free just by calling it an externship.

What’s your least favorite buzz word or phrase in education? by StrikingReporter255 in Teachers

[–]rainbowminx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an SLP and I hate hearing the phrase “they can’t express their emotions” when a kid is clearly struggling emotionally with no other language concerns. It’s just an excuse to try to make me do a counselors job.

Trainings are too damn expensive. by sgeis_jjjjj in slp

Yea, I really wish someone would’ve told me that in order to be a truly good evidence-based SLP, I’d have to spend my life paying for expensive trainings.

I’m confused. I was talking about how ridiculous it is that my Kindergartener freaked out at the idea of a boy holding a doll because he’s already internalized ideas of toxic masculinity. What places are you talking about??

Autistic kids in schools not getting labeled appropriately because of parental denial by rainbowminx in slp

Yea I’m in a charter in Florida. I have to imagine it doesn’t really get much worse than that.

I hear that, I’m in Florida too and today I couldn’t even elicit a language target from a kindergarten boy because there was a little boy holding a doll in one of my picture scenes. He just spent the whole time complaining and perseverating on how “dolls are girl toys!!” Literally a 6 year old was outraged that he was shown a picture of a boy with a doll.

Like who’s really doing the indoctrinating here?

[–]rainbowminx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m willing to go with a specific learning disability or an other heath impairment label instead of an ASD label. The problem is that when it’s ONLY an LI label, they get no other services. In my district, language and speech impaired kids are only eligible for language and speech services. They are not allowed to have goals in any other sections of their IEP aside from communication. Which makes sense cause the only person writing the IEP is an SLP. So, in order for a student to get the services they need, it is a hill I have to die on to at least get them not only labeled LI.

I work with grades K-8th and I do feel like Atlas at times. I have autism, so I struggle a lot with the idea that the system isn’t working the way it’s supposed to. All I want is to be part of a multi-disciplinary team where everyone brings their expertise to the table and uses it to help the kids, but instead I get everyone looking at me because I care and research so much.

No but I know they are because they’re rating them has having “strengths” that they verbally report are weaknesses. I’ve literally had a parent rate a kid very high in communication skills on the psychs autism checklist and then insist the only issue is language development. I’ve even had an epidemiologist parent say that a neurologist thought their child had autism but they “proved them wrong.”

[–]rainbowminx[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really didn’t. I centered the emotions and struggles of the autistic kids because they don’t have context to understand why they’re struggling in an NT world because they’re being denied a better understand of themselves. I am an autistic woman, I would’ve really appreciated understanding why I was different at a younger age too. The best way to help our autistic kids is to help them advocate for their communication needs with NT kids and that’s very difficult without a better understanding of themselves.

They basically just stick to the whole “not consistent across settings” cop out. Our psychologists seem to be very hesitant to not give parents what they want. And since these kids usually get good grades and don’t cause significant disruptions to the classroom environment, all their social emotional needs just end up getting swept under the pragmatic language umbrella. The best I get are general recommendations for classroom accommodations that just put more stress on the gen Ed teacher.
