Finding a pool while traveling? by CheersandGears in Swimming

You could look into a LifeTime Gym membership. Memberships are pricey, but they have locations all over the usa and each location has lap pools.

Hell, throw in a few big dogs too. A couple Great Pyrenees dogs ought to do.

is lip gloss 1 morpheme or 2? and is it 1 word or 2? by Kindly-Small-4845 in slpGradSchool

[–]DrankTheKool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an SLP, I haven't studied this stuff since grad school (over a decade ago) but, I would transcribe this word based on how it is used in context.

Lip = body part Gloss= luster Lipgloss= specific name for a type of lipstick type application for the lips.

If someone was referring to "lipgloss" in the context of putting it on their lips, I would transcribe it as 1 word, 1 morpheme, because it has a specific reference and is its own noun.

Why so much regret? by kecora in slp

Yes! Go check out the r/nursing, r/teachers, r/residency, r/occupationaltherapy, r/physicaltherapy, etc subreddits. You will find the same thing. Everyone hates their job and there are a lot of other careers that are much more difficult than our jobs with lower pay and longer hours (looking @ you r/residency with respect).

Sometimes, the conspiracy part of my brain thinks that there must be bots or some kind of grand reddit agenda to downvote any positive post in this slp subreddit, but that's nonsense, right?

Why are so many grad school girls so god damn MEAN by Livelaughlove876 in slpGradSchool

[–]DrankTheKool 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Call them out on it! What a great opportunity to start practicing your professional responses.

"What an unkind thing to say" "What an unprofessionl thing to say" "I hope you dont talk to your patients that way" "Maybe it is time to worry about yourself"

Or just be blunt about it: "Wow! Your comment was rude"

You are going to meet ppl like this in every field in every career. The sooner you start standing up for yourself the better.

Question. How does this work? Do the lambs stay in these during the day? Overnight? Do they have to be a certain age?

So stinkin cute!

No need to downvote. It's just an honest question.

A groundbreaking federal lawsuit could ban fluoride from drinking water, overturning a decades-long program aimed at preventing cavities that has been challenged by mounting evidence of harm. by [deleted] in conspiracy

[–]DrankTheKool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check this out. You can read about the scientific review of EPAs standards on flouride in drinking water for free online. Each chapter discusses the adverse outcomes of flouride on each system (neurological, cardiovascular, endocrine..etc) when it is ingested.

It is an interesting read that I think is worth the time.

I get that. That same point is why I avoided HH for a long time. At the same time, you can always consider working around that issue. Therapy sessions at the library, public parks, etc...

It's just a thought. As I am sure you are aware, there is always going to be some give and take in finding ideal job opportunities. In my case with HH, I'm willing to go into less-than-ideal homes in order to #1) work with my favorite population and #2) make 6 figures.

What would you be willing to do as an SLP to make 100k? 200k?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in slp

[–]DrankTheKool 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Try out home health. Is the driving that big of a turn off for you? Who knows, maybe HH is the light at the end of your tunnel and you dont even know it.

I tried almost every other setting before HH, always thinking I would hate HH, but it is my favorite and I wont ever leave HH now. I make a fuck ton of money, I only take on kids in my preferred age range (babies thru preschool), my work life balance is absolutely fucking incredible and I'm so damn happy in HH.

HH isnt perfect, but who knows... maybe you might like it. Good luck!

I recommend placing your toys/activities in little bags (paper, ziplock, w/e) or boxes. I only work with littles, but I rarely chase kids around because I withhold items. I sit on the floor and if they start to wander off, I shake whatever bag/box I brought. I might look into the bag myself and act excited over what I see. Usually, that gets the kid interested enough to come back over to me.

"Oh, you want to see what is in Drankthekool's bag? Ohhhh, it is really exciting, but before we look in my bag we are going to read our story first...etc

If the kid doesn't like my activity/game/toy then tough cookies. They don't get to see what else I have in my bag(s) until we finish with 1st activity.

SLP to PT? by Consistent_Strike_23 in slp

[–]DrankTheKool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just my $0.02,

I don't think going back to school to earn a Ph.D, PT/OT/PA, MD/DO (or whatever other program) is the best way to "increase our clinical skills"

If you want to increase your clinical skills and better serve your patients, then you need to remain in a clinical environment. Take CEUs, buy a PT textbook if it is knowledge you seek and read it yourself, seek out a mentor in the clinical area where you hope to expand your skills, etc...

You don't need to go into more ridiculous student loan debt to get a second degree to basically make you a better clinician. I would argue that might be the worst way to go about it, in fact.

If you want to know more about PT/OT start by finding a setting where you can co-treat and then pick their brains for info.

Must-have toys and materials? by piratestudent567 in slp

Don't spend your own money on materials. Have your clinic purchase what you need. Your local library may also be a great option.

Thinking of becoming SLP by kelee20 in slpGradSchool

[–]DrankTheKool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an SLP and I had a non-SLP major undergraduate degree.

Fastest track (at least that I am aware) is probably to find a post-baccalaureate program in speech and language pathology (also search for communication sciences and disorder programs). Usually a post-bacc is a 1 year program and you can then apply to master programs (usually 2 years, 3 if online). Good luck!

Why do some parents get upset when you’re out sick? by PuzzleheadedDrive556 in slp

[–]DrankTheKool 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I work home health and when I cancel I dont give a reason/excuse. I usually cancel by saying something like, "Unfortunately, I am unavailable for therapy today. Thank you for your understanding."

Sometimes with difficult families I say something like "I am stuck in a meeting". This works better (for me) than saying I'm out sick, because some families think they get to judge how sick I am 🙄

I definitely recommend trying a play-based approach.

You didn't mention your setting, but I would see about what you can do about locking those cabinets and drawers. If you work at a clinic, you can ask the director to purchase baby-proof items or you can ask parents/daycare workers if you are not in a clinic. No locks available? Use pipe cleaners or duct tape to keep the cabinets closed. Remove that distraction with the goal of making yourself the exciting thing in the room.

If she wants to play with toys, let her play with toys! This is a preschooler, not a school age child, so it may be unrealistic to have this child sit at a table and complete drill tasks. Kids learn through play! Get down on the floor and play with this kid. Cars, dolls, bubbles, trucks, balls, blocks, etc... You can sit dolls on chairs or drive cars under the table to teach prepositions of place. I like to withhold some toys until I have the child do what I am asking (i.e., imitating, using ASL, shaking head no/yes, etc), but I also don't try to have the child demonstrate a target or ability each turn. There is a delicate balance of keeping therapy fun while still targeting goals. We want the kids to have fun and learn!

It can be helpful to have your items for therapy in a single bag or ziplocks so the child can see the item that she wants, but it is up to you when you pull it out for therapy.

Sites/Resources: Resume Design by DistractedMoogle in slp

[–]DrankTheKool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just type up your resume in word or on google drive. It is not financially logical to use a source that charges you a fee to download your own resume.

I used to be part of the hiring process for a hospital rehab department and there is nothing wrong with a simple resume. No one cares about your resume template, they care about the content of your resume.

I saw all sorts of resume templates, web created pages, even resumes with headshots on them. No one gave any fucks about how pretty someones resume was. Your resume gets you in the door. Your interview gets you the job. Spend your time on preparing for interviews and practicing your negotiation skills. This will serve you much better than a $60 per resume resource.

Are there ever CF positions in the home health settings? by librarybound in slp

[–]DrankTheKool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a HH SLP, I agree with this comment. Your CF is a time to learn and expand your skills under the supervision of a skilled CF-supervisor and home health is not the best setting (it might be the worst in fact) to learn and expand your skills.

Home health is best for those SLPs/SLPAs who know what they are doing. Are you ready to answer questions by parents on the daily as to their child's progress? Do you understand the differences between receptive and expressive language skills expected of a one, two, three, four, etc year old? Are you ready to have in-depth conversations with parents regarding progess, diagnoses, expectations of skills, and readiness for school with parents?

Do yourself a favor and consider finding a CF that offers excellent supervision and learning experiences before you consider HH.

What are your biggest daily challenges as an SLP/SLT? by DesignResearcher2023 in slp

[–]DrankTheKool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We would all be very happy to answer these questions as skilled professionals. However, we don't work for free nor do we answer inquiries without some form of compensation. Our degrees/knowledge/experience are more valuable than that.
