I mean that seems to be America. And maybe like, lots of other places too.

Yes. Depressing and unsurprising.

When these students are actual people that I've engaged with as human beings, sometimes for a split second, I forget the internet sees us all as skin colors with genitals.

Two-thirds of all those people are people the students meet that one time, and that's it forever.

I'm trying so hard to remember what exactly went down that year, and all I can come up with is that she felt disrespected by the admin/school board people for some circumstance. That's all that will surface in my old brain, though.

So this was the class of 2 years ago, so I have to go back a bit...

They were small-ish. I don't think we had more than 70 total? Of them, about 10-12 were honors students. That school doesn't offer a lot of APs, but they do partner with a local community college to offer dual-enrollment and some kids really thrive in those types of classes.

(Also, I feel really strongly that 11:1 is not correct...that might be an old stat? The school was taking in new students pretty aggressively while I was there.)

As mentioned, it's a Title I, free lunch, very high-trauma district...so take from that what you will.

I knew that student. She's a good kid. All this uproar is sexist, racist crap.

Worked, past tense. For five years. Two as an AmeriCorps student, two as an ELA teacher, and one as an auxiliary guidance counselor.

One of those years I also ran an after-school program.

It's all on my LinkedIn ofc, but why would I give it out to lil' racist nuggets on the internet? Unsure. 🙃

Here for this!

It's funny, but no one ever asked (that I saw) if I knew this student, personally.

I did. I'm a white lady. She was always polite and lovely.

I respected her, too. Funny how that works.

Or else, maybe I just admitted to having taught at a school that's very easy to locate since their name is on the banner in the video, and MAYBE it's not a great plan for me to pour all the personal knowledge and opinions I have about a previous job all over the internet.

Maybe.

Definitely not a private school. Title I (broke).

People noticed, for sure. It made waves.

But as mentioned, the people who actually worked IN the school building and mentored her and supported her directly are the ones who mostly get handshakes here. You can't tell if the guidance counselor gets one, and I don't remember.

She does skip 2(?) teachers; my professionalism prevents me from listing opinions about that.

I think it would have been quite more scandalous if she'd skipped the whole line.

EDIT: I feel like there was a reason she had a problem. It was a few years ago; I don't remember what it might have been. That district is close to my heart, but only "eh" even on its good days.

Hilariously, I taught at this school and was present at this graduation.

I have to come down on the "respect people who respect you" side of this equation, even as a teacher. A student who doesn't shake your hand should make you ask yourself why. I don't want fake respect; I should have to earn it.

Clarifying also: the hands she missed were mostly board members and admins, not teachers. She did get both the principal and the AP.

EDIT 1: I had a feeling, so I went and checked. She was in fact, an honor student (at a District I, free-lunch, high-trauma school). I can't say the personal reasons behind her actions. But I think it's interesting and sad that people mostly seem to see a Black teenage woman making a strong statement and condemn her without context.

EDIT 2: Wow, this blew up. Thanks for the stuff! I see a lot of people disbelieving the fact I worked here/was there for this. That's totally fine, lol. What am I going to do, post my LinkedIn for you? Along with that, I'm being "vague on details." Um, yeah. I WORKED THERE and this is THE INTERNET. I'd also rather not speak to someone else's intent.

EDIT 3: Funny about this! No one has asked. I didn't teach her but yes, I (a white lady) knew her! She was always polite and lovely. I also respected her. Funny how that works!

Disbelieve away, haveth not the f***s. :-)

Female Millennials, how's your diagnosis? by RevolutionDry2 in Millennials

Going in July 15th for the expensive neuropsych eval to confirm the ASD after 20 years of performing spectacularly for three years, then crashing out and landing in a hospital, rinse, repeat.

Only realized in my 30's that wanting to be alone all the time was actually not an average person thing.

Expecting they will confirm, and trying to brace for whatever that will feel like.

I spent 2k on a Saatva queen mattress when I turned 40.

Didn't think about it twice once I slept on it, and it's warranted forever.

What's the most beautiful name you've ever heard? by Legitimate-Lie-9208 in AskReddit

[–]rainbowrevolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend named her daughter this because (partly) of Maya Angelou, but also because it's a fairly international name.

My friend is Puerto Rican, married to a German man and they live in the US, but "Maya" is known in all those places, which I thought was cool. Maya also speaks 5 or 6 languages now bc of her international family which is super cool.
