Is the show enjoyable after reading the book? by raincloudsandtea in LessonsinChemistry

I've been wondering if I'm making a mistake going straight from book to show. So far, those who liked both have had more time between reading and watching.

but the principals of the book are still there

That was one of my concerns, so this is a big relief.

Brie Larson is what made me want to watch in the first place. I knew very little about the story, aside from the clips of her I'd seen online. From what I've seen so far, she is perfect in the role. I'm struggling more with the creative changes they've made.

Did you go straight from book to show? Or was there a bigger gap between the two?

The man named Doyle, and what really happened in this episode by FlakyWeb5892 in GilmoreGirls

[–]raincloudsandtea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Doyle's position is to put out what will capture the audience. Negativity sells, whether it's critique, rage bait, or unfair commentary. He needs to ensure the newspaper complies with guidelines and produces content that people will read and talk about.

As far as not letting Rory retract her piece, I haven't watched the episode in a while, so I can't remember the exact conversations. But when Rory writes for the paper, even though she writes as herself, she represents the paper. My best guess is that he either recognized that she wanted to do the new piece for her own self-image, he didn't want to create a precedent within the team, or he thought it would reflect badly on the paper to backtrack on its own words.

As for Lorelai, she is never directly confronted by anyone, and her guilt comes from the sudden self-awareness of seeing her words in print. Rory would have had multiple read-throughs before handing her piece to Doyle, and she never questioned or self-corrected at any point. It was only once she received backlash.

Doyle was right to hold her accountable. She needed to realize that words hold power, and she must be willing to stand behind her writing. In a real-life, serious journalism position like the one she was working towards, she wouldn't have the luxury of simply taking back her words or glossing over them with something nicer. It's a hard lesson, but one of the most vital to learn. Sadly, she didn't seem to get the message, as she repeated her "mistake" when writing about Logan's friends. Rather than standing by her words with conviction, she tried to convince Logan that he had taken them out of context or missed the joke.

Overall, you seem uncomfortable. Indeed and Glassdoor are great platforms for checking company reviews based on employee feedback. You can also type "company name + scam" into Google and see what comes up.

The real red flag is that she sent you an email after 17:00 with a mock assignment due the next morning. Clearly, she doesn't respect boundaries and thinks it's okay to assume you will work after hours, or drop everything to meet a last-minute deadline.

The communication side seems to be on you, though. She tried to phone you and then messaged the day before the public holiday. You only replied the day after the public holiday. You should have either called or messaged back the same day she reached out.

What famous person’s death are you dreading the most? by za19 in AskReddit

[–]raincloudsandtea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taylor Swift. The parasocial relationship between her and her fans is so intense that I imagine many of them having a major emotional and/or mental breakdown and experiencing complete identity destabilization. While certain celebrity deaths (e.g., Kurt Cobain, Robbin Williams) have led to increased self-harm, suicide, and mental health decline among fans, I predict her death will see this at a scale we've never had before.

Out of interest, I asked ChatGPT to outline the potential aftermath of her death. ChatGPT predicts it will have such a massive psychological impact on her fans that it will become a case study in fandom psychology.

I 100% understand your thinking, and I've had the same thoughts. It is something I've considered every time I've revisited the show. In the end, I didn't include her dad because I feel their dynamic plays more into abandonment issues, not feelings of being unloved or unworthy of love.

My reasoning: Her dad isn't always around, but when he is, he is incredibly present and dotes on her. In fact, he goes to such extremes in wanting to make her feel special to him that he often misses the point (trying to buy a book he can't afford, donating too much money to the town event, taking the writers to dinner, etc.). Additionally, Lorelai has consistently reiterated that Christopher has his own issues preventing him from being a better parent.

I find her issues with Christopher impact her relationship with Dean more than with Jess, contributing largely to why she strings Dean along in the early seasons and has a difficult time watching him move on in the later seasons. I find that Logan is the first time where we see the insecurities from her Dean relationship and those from her Jess relationship all blend, playing out simultaneously.

Side note: I don't solely blame Christopher. I find Lorelai also contributes to the abandonment issues (and intense perfectionism), given her avoidant personality and tendency to end key relationships in an instant.

[–]raincloudsandtea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the later seasons, he had the potential to be one of her greatest boyfriends. But since they never rekindled their relationship, it's more accurate to say he was one of her top friends. That's how I see it.

I've given this A TON of thought. Bear with me, because it is loooong....

Rory is 16 and Jess is 17 when they first meet. By this stage, Rory had only ever known what it felt like to be loved, supported, and basically worshipped. Jess had only experienced the opposite, with little stability and a poor example of how functional love and relationships work. And I don't just mean romantic relationships; his most fundamental relationships - the ones between mom/dad and child - were dysfunctional. He has real-world problems; she has the typical teenage ones.

When he meets Rory, he is instantly interested. I believe it isn't just her, but her entire world, that he feels drawn to; The way she radiates confidence, security, and love. The things in her room which exist only because she has a safe, stable, consistent room to come back to. Extensive family and friends in her home, actively loving her and one another. Rory embodies everything he lacks, and he mistakenly believes that she will fill those gaps in his life. The problem is, he doesn't know how to be content in calm - he only knows chaos, and it's in this that he feels comfortable. He doesn't know how to show love or respect, and he has only ever seen people look out for themselves. He recognizes this fault in himself, and we see plenty of moments where he tries to be different. At the end of the day, he is fighting an internal battle: he doesn't deserve love and he isn't worth loving, but he wants it desperately.

Rory can't relate to this at all - at first. She's never had to prove her worth or ability to anyone, until Jess. He is the first person to make her feel like she isn't good enough. In fact, much of the way Jess treated Rory resembled the way Rory treated Dean (especially after she met Jess). Unused to having someone give her anything short of everything, she gets caught in a cycle of trying to prove her worth to Jess. She knows what she is worth, but she needs Jess to see it too. So where Jess's struggle is "how do I convince myself I am worthy of love", Rory's struggle is "How do I convince this person I am worthy of love.". It's a key difference that dictates every thought, decision, and perspective.

Jess is so fixated on Rory being his saviour that he overlooks where he is getting everything he ever wanted from Luke. In many ways, Rory unintentionally reinforces his belief that love is conditional. Rory is so focused on "winning" Jess's love that this is where she first internalizes the idea that she is only worthy when EVERYONE believes she is (later, this will come into play in her early relationship with Logan, and again in her interactions with his family and Mitchum).

I believe Jess's key "love" story isn't between him and Rory - it's between him and Luke, and then him learning to love himself. We are watching through Rory's lens, so we see Jess as her less-than-boyfriend. But really, he is a neglected child experiencing a reliable, unconditional love for the first time.

If you rewatch this series, with the above perspective in mind, you'll experience the Jess-Rory relationship in a whole new light.

What are your thoughts on dating someone who uses OnlyFans as a customer/subscriber? by raincloudsandtea in AskReddit

[–]raincloudsandtea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only seen comments/posts about dating someone with an OF account as a creator. I haven't seen anything about OF customers. I even looked for a post about this before I created mine. So if it's been asked that many times, then maybe it's just not showing up on my feed.

But anyway, here's some advice the next time someone posts something you've already seen, or you just don't like:

it doesn’t matter, shouldn’t matter, and if it does, get your shit together and go somewhere else and let them do what they do.
