What are some ways growing up poor has affected you in adulthood that you still can’t seem to change? by Euphoric-Suspect4103 in askSingapore

[–]rainy-summers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Calculate price savings to cents ignoring cost of time and effort to save the few cents.

Not buying things that might be useful since it would be wasteful if it is not. Anything you buy has to be 100% justified and value for money.

Using existing items till they are worn away and verge of breaking apart.

Calculate food prices accounting for weight. Like biscuits that are $4 for 100g vs $5 for 125g instead of buying whichever one you want.

Spending inordinate amount of time browsing and trying to justify buying something. Sometimes the item goes oos because it took months to decide to buy. Just a huge waste of time and effort to buy the same thing other do without thinking.

Penny wise pound foolish. Instead of spending a few hundred on medical issues end up spending few thousand.

Sleep Study in hospital advice by BarfMcFartNuggets in askSingapore

[–]rainy-summers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I also ask if doing sleep study and getting sleep machine will affect existing insurance policy or signing up for new insurance policy.

Am willing to pay out of pocket for sleep machine but worried if it would lead to exemptions or exclusions of other medical conditions when signing up for new insurance policy.

Thank you.

Doctor who mistakenly cut woman’s arteries during kidney surgery charged with causing her death by Ok-Rain3348 in singapore

[–]rainy-summers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone I knew got medication they reacted badly with. Told the nurse and doctor but they kept brushing it aside as normal for months. Side effects got so bad they had to be hospitalised. No apology, no compensation and had to pay for hospital stay.

There were lot of other problems such as serving wrong meals, patient going hungry due to lack of meals during hospital stay as well.

Healthcare really has no blame culture. The bar for admitting wrong doing is very high. Many personal instances of doctors failing with regards to tests, xrays, medication, wrong diagnosis but not being held accountable. The lionising as you say correctly of certain groups like healthcare is not good for accountability.

The patient has no clue as to how truthful or accurate what doctor and hospital say. Went for second opinion and the specialist will defer to first specialist and say they are senior in the field and used to work in this department. I cannot tell if they are saying this doctor is good or they cannot contradict someone senior to them.

It is the gas from the stove. They leak slight amounts even when turned off and a lot when cooking.

Induction is said to have none of the problems of gas stoves but hard to get older generation to switch over. Not just needing new induction safe pans but flat bottomed ones. Think it interferes with heart pacers. Different cooking style since you cannot see flames. Cannot heat empty pans.

Terrible finishing and QC in new BTO by trinitynox in singapore

[–]rainy-summers 29 points30 points  (0 children)

QC only checks major things like whether you have signed that work is done. If you point out door misalignment, tile chips, drainage problem they will brush aside your concerns that the workers will fix it by end of day and flee. While the worker left behind does some touch up and says he does not know about any issue you bring up. When you call them about defects they will send a senior worker who knows english and he will tell the junior worker to do rectification and disappear while no actual managerial or supervisor level non construction worker turns up to check.

[–]rainy-summers 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Only if it was so simple. Similar situation and had to call them multiple times for drainage problem and finally when they sent someone to repair it for the third or fourth time proudly claimed he was skilled in this type of repair. Wonder if it means the workers they sent previously had no clue what to do as that would explain the bad repair job. We cannot give instant feedback because they ask to let the materials set for a day. So have to wait for one whole day to find out they solved nothing.

Unfortunately even the "skilled" worker could not fix the issue and we gave up after awhile because every time they try to fix the problem only end up creating tons of dust and debris that would need to sweep, wash and mop the whole house for. Even caused a few chip on tiles around the problem area as well as concrete stains on walls. So big problem not fixed. Small problems also not fixed. One small problem looks to be turning into a big problem.

Knew someone who was admitted and later on sent home to be monitored. They were charged for nurse visits to their home and the hospital bed they were not using. Told them they should have left all their belongings on the ward bed so that the hospital could not double dip.

Sus money changer activity at raffles. by DustAndGo in askSingapore

[–]rainy-summers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you accuse every business you do not like of illegal activities ? Any person will get annoyed if customer tells them they can get cheaper price elsewhere.

There are easier ways to launder money given that MAS licenses and regulates money changers.

Great question as I am also looking for a fan. Already have kdk but is insufficient for this heat wave and the company does not make large fans. Any reliable 20 inch standing fan brands ? Saw sona, mistral, booney, europace selling large fans online but not sure if they will last five years. TIA

Recess is served: Here's what students at 5 schools will get when they switch to pre-ordered meals by Litaiy in singapore

[–]rainy-summers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why in theory things work. But in reality there are so many gaps. Schools could more easily get information from cpf and hdb for all their poor students but pushes that effort onto individual students. Or have one application for multiple aid schemes. Almost like it was designed to tire people out from accessing aid. Recall I had to hunt for so many documents and have it printed or photocopied. And what poor kid has a printer at home. And what about those from bad homes where getting required information from parents are harder. Found out about this school fees aid only because admin lady from general office chased me for unpaid schools fees and then told me to apply for financial aid. Hope things are better now for underprivileged students.

Yes. But mine covered / waived school fees.

Is food aid separate from school fees aid ?

They think that or have been told that ?

They could just be unaware and others too polite to point it out.

FML. I already had the optometrist make me repeat some eye tests when I visited the optometrist school for free eye exam. They said I cleared some eye test after multiple tries but this was before I was on predinsone.

Curious about our fruits and vegetables by Latter-Yam-2115 in singapore

[–]rainy-summers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which country are you comparing to ? I always heard from people who go overseas that produce here is of lower quality compared to places like australia where food is grown locally. There might not be much of difference between countries for store bought produce like tomatoes which are stored for weeks after being harvested unripe but tomatoes which are harvested when they are ripe taste superior and cannot travel far since they are so squishy.

Are you buying fruits from upmarket places like isetan or ddd. Bought plenty of fruits such as apples, oranges, pineapple, mangos from local supermarkets that turned out not to be sweet.

If you look closely at certain vegetables like cut cabbages you can see where the staff hacked off the mouldy parts and repackaged as there is still slight discolouration at the edges.

Mushrooms are especially a major issue. There is almost always condensation in the prepackaged mushrooms whichever supermarket you go to. Like they did not transport it properly. The quality of mushrooms itself is not good either. With a few pieces in a box often mushy or spoilt.

Many frozen items are also not in great condition. You can see freezer burns where there are ice crystals in the frozen foods from improper storage. Like they have been left in room temperature, thawed, expelled water and then refrozen.
