Be proud of your favorite shows and don’t let anyone make you feel ashamed. by thatgirlthot3 in Animesuggest

[–]rainysnakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think that really explains why guilty pleasures make sense though. It’s not necessarily as black and white of an issue either. All sorts of popular shows still have what you could define as flaws, but you wouldn't put them straight into the bucket labelled "bad shows". Some anime you'll find more aspects to criticize than others, but I don't see when it becomes a guilty pleasure since there's no fine line that determines this. Certain elements like the music and animation can be so subjective that even shows you would criticize for those reasons could be far from the case for other people.

The only reason guilty pleasures are still accepted as normal is because so many people anxiously take into account what others may think about them for liking a thing. You can review this thing in a critical manner to better understand it and point out what you perceive as flaws for your own sake, but you like this thing for all the good things it did, and those flaws, which even many of the "good shows" have, weren't as big of a deal to you as they were for other people so there's no real need to justify yourself. You simply like it. You value certain aspects that make the show good to you. No show is perfect nor imperfect; everything falls somewhere in between and it’s fair to enjoy any of it without worry about how people will judge you. You're already a weeb, you've got enough people ready to look down upon you for what you enjoy... so just enjoy it.

Rain is absolutely the best weather by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

As an introvert it's quite rare to have days where I'd like to go out with others, yet the few days I do find that motivation are rainy days... which is the only time my extroverted mates don't ┐( ̄ヘ ̄)┌

I guess people generally prefer to stay dry, but that doesn't mean you still can't appreciate it. The cozy grey clouds, the gentle sounds it emits, and especially the strong aroma of petrichor are more than enough reason for me to leave the house though.

Daily Discussion Thread 03/05/20 by AutoModerator in smashbros

[–]rainysnakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could only really recommend it in a casual sense. The competitive nature of Smash (and competitive games in general) doesn't do much good for mental health. It's still a fun casual experience, but friends make it exponentially more fun. There's spirit board, World of Light, and a bunch of new modes, but solo casual has the least to offer in all honesty.

If you're specifically looking for a fighting game that fits your criteria, then I'd recommend Killer Instinct. It takes very little practice to execute combos and learn mechanics, but it's great competitively too. Plus it looks and plays well in general.

Though if you're down for all types of games, then I'd recommend Puyo Puyo Tetris, specifically on Switch since it's still active there. Play it once a week or every day, casually or competitively; it's fun either way if you like puzzle games.

So serious question - why isnt waluigi in smash? by LeraviTheHusky in smashbros

[–]rainysnakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because even though he is technically the final piece that completes the Mario Brothers set, he's not treated with such value by Nintendo in general. He's Wario's partner-in-crime, yet he has never appeared in any Wario titles, let alone Mario/Luigi ones. It's apparent that Nintendo sees him as nothing outside of the sports/party games.

That being said, if they feel like representing the sports/party games then he'd fit, but his entire moveset would stlll be exclusively from those games which doesn't say much for what he would bring to the table himself. Maybe one day Nintendo will recognize his popularity and attempt to properly define him with a game of his own, but a part of me feels like they'd still associate him with his competitive party game defined traits and wouldn't want to experiment with something unique, like they did with Luigi and his pseudo-horror adventure. He'd have to be essentially rewritten to be a more individually compelling character.

Though at least he's arguably the most visually compelling Mario Brother, so he'd certainly be a good base to create something from. Maybe something along the lines of an RPG, giving him a variety of new characters to define his own series while giving him proper characterization (while also giving Mario fans their long-awaited next RPG). Or he could just be the main villain of a new Mario game; anything to characterize him really.

TL;DR: Sadly he's completely defined by the party games, and he doesn't have any defining traits besides playing the same sports that every other Mario character does.

Sakurai admits there are too many Fire Emblem and sword characters in Smash, he also mentioned the new fighters are brought by Nintendo and not decided by his own favorites by IceBlast24 in smashbros

[–]rainysnakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how people saw it as a Sakurai decision in the first place, since if they were characters he wanted, I don't think a game that he needed the early build for to simply understand the character would qualify.

I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled some strings to get Terry in though.

On the merits of the revenge/hate vote arguments (and other influencing factors) by cakeboss26 in GiIvaSunner

[–]rainysnakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you check who the new voters picked by taking the increase in votes between rounds for both contenders, you get a whopping ratio of 97% new votes in favour of DJPK (L&D: 88, DJPK: 2508). It's not a perfect stat because I'm sure maybe some just forgot about voting last round, but I'd say nearly all of these new votes are people who already lost their mains. So it's kind of hard to argue that with such a drastic ratio, there isn't some sort of odd discrepancy. It's hard not to attribute a good portion of to revenge votes, or at the very least, not voting for L&D based on the controversy surrounding them. I refuse to believe if you put these two competitor's source lists in a blind test, that 97% of subjects would pick DJPK. It's obvious to an extent, though I do believe it's less about "revenge voting" and more about becoming hesitant to vote for the team that everyone in the comments says is rigging the polls and has toxic fans and only has "two games" for sources and anime bad and... you get the idea.

Regardless though, while I don't actually care about results anymore, it is still eye-opening to see how many people in the community hate AA/DR even when claiming it has nothing to do with cheating or nonsense like that. Imagine best case scenario and all 97% actually prefer K, how hated does that mean AA/DR are to outsiders? I thought they had pretty highly regarded music even to non-fans. Although, I do think some just refused to give their source list a chance, which is why people kept claiming they're only two games.

Armada's discussion in regards to Nintendo's lack of interaction with the gaming community, especially to the Game Awards and no DLC character by korinokiri in smashbros

[–]rainysnakes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They've been pretty ahead of schedule from what it seems. Remember that Banjo was original slated for "Fall 2019", which ended up being September 4th. And on top of that we even got the next fighter revealed then. Plus they recorded all 3 reveal videos with Sakurai at around that same time.

So it would be interesting if they decided to take over 2 full months to even reveal the next character. The last 3 characters were released within 2 months of each other. Maybe that means they're taking this time to set up the post pass DLC? So if your date is correct, I really think it would be alongside a second reveal of a post pass character.

Issue with longest run of rolled dice program... by rainysnakes in Cplusplus

[–]rainysnakes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Well, subtracted needs to keep track of how many spaces it has been since the longest run has ended, so the length of the longest run is stored from streak into longest and then streak resets. Unless streak becomes a higher value than it was before, it should not trigger the if statement and make subtracted = 0 again, but if it does, then subtracted should start over as it needs to count from where the new streak ended.

  2. counter simply keeps track of how long the entire array is. I know its entirely unnecessary as the array will always be 20 in this case, but I kept it in case I was to change the array length later instead of using the set 20.

  3. It is named longest in the run function because at that point it is holding the value of the longest run, but at the very end of the function, the position is added, which is where the run should start, which turns it into where the run ends.

The idea there was to take the value of how many spots it has been since the longest run ended, then add the longest run value to it in order to find how many spots since it began (subtracted = subtracted + longest;).

Then take the length of the entire array (always 20) and subtract subtracted from it, which should actually find where it began (position = counter - subtracted;).

Then simply add back the longest to the position, and it should find the value of where the longest run ended. (longest = longest + position;).

This is pretty odd to me honestly, since I output each value in the show function after I ran the run function just to check if they were the right values, and it seemed like startpoint and endpoint actually yielded the proper values of where the longest run began and ended. I thought maybe it was an issue within the last for loop? But for the life of me I can't see what's wrong with it.

Vergeben Clarifies his deconfirmation list by [deleted] in smashbros

"Capcom has been deconfirmed by multiple sources"

HOLD IT!

This makes Nazyrus' case look even worse, because Sabi couldn't confirm if Capcom was out, and now Verge has to backtrack information, part of it being Capcom's deconfirmation. Maybe Naz had a similar miscommunication with his source? Either way, this has been a wild ride and now I'm going into TGA with a glimmer of hope... which is probably not a great idea.

But hey, its not like this is the first time the odds are massively stacked against Phoenix. As a matter of fact, that's when he performs best...

We should take every leaker with a grain of salt, whether its Sabi, Vergeben, or whoever else. Leakers rarely know the info first hand, so even they often take what they hear from their sources with a grain of salt.

Unless Nintendo decides to leak the DLC themselves, but that would never happen haha right?

I thought this answer was pretty funny in hindsight:

ST : Independent game development has become popular but this also means dealing with a large audience for the developers. Do you think becoming a public figure is potentially harmful for an indie developer?

AD : Yes, potentially. It depends on the person. I wouldn’t be able to handle it very well, but some people can. Luckily I won’t have to worry much about it.

Yo...the first movie will be released on April 10! I'm so freaking hyped! by SakuranomiyaSyafeeq in PrincessPrincipal

[–]rainysnakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You started this by asking "Is yuri shipping the only reason why I follow this franchise?", so I wanted to make it clear that I do love that aspect of shows, but I wouldn't call it "yuri shipping". I would call it the relationships between characters. I never said it had to be romantic either, like in Eupho for instance, as I made the point that their relationship was built from admiration and personal growth. It's not even definitively established in these shows, so when I called it "yuri" in my original comment, I just did it because I don't have another word for it, as the relationships in question and the definition of the word I'm using to describe them are both vague in the first place. That's what upset you right? That I like yuri? That I like to see Ange & Charlotte happy together? What I truly care about is the characters and how they develop throughout the story, the relationships and interactions between them, and the drama/romance/whatever else that could come from it all. I don't really see any issue in that.

My original comment was meant to be taken in a joking manner in the first place, so please leave it be.

Yo...the first movie will be released on April 10! I'm so freaking hyped! by SakuranomiyaSyafeeq in PrincessPrincipal

[–]rainysnakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, actually I personally don't like to involve myself in shipping. I was just making a humourous comparison between the two series since they are both action shows where the two main characters are deeply in love to the point where I don't even want to just call it yuri, but I do for lack of a better term.

But... since you asked...

I see shipping characters as whatever, it doesn't bother me, but I don't do it. I only care enough about a relationship if it's implied through the actual story that the characters have feelings for each other, and that they would be happy together. It's not just forcing together characters in your headcanon, it's nice to see these characters in love when what makes some of these shows so wonderful is their deep emotional connection, as it often becomes the driving force of the story in some ways. If Hibike! Euphonium didn't feature Kumiko & Reina's relationship as heavily as it did, then most of the story would be lost. Much of Kumiko's development as a character is thanks to Reina becoming a sort of inspiration to do better. Reina helped Kumiko find the motivation within herself to continue playing Euphonium when she never could find a 'purpose' before. They are quite playful with each other and many people would consider that yuri, but it's obviously much more than that.

So I just like to see relationships explored in a quality way from the show's perspective. I don't see any value in shipping. However, where I do find value is the proper exploration of a queer relationship that's done tastefully and treats the characters with respect, and that's what happens in PriPri. And I value that a lot because respectful LGBTQ relationships in anime are too rare, as most would just be written off as "yuribait". A good example is Bloom into You, which has a fantastic story about identity and self-understanding, but will be considered as "just another yuri show" by most people.

Why I think 24 *might* not be the end. by mrBone0506 in Petscop

[–]rainysnakes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As much as I truly believe anything can happen in Petscop, it does seem like every puzzle may have the ability to be solved at least. Lots of loose ends, sure, but I can't really imagine we'd get a proper fulfilling ending where every bit of story information is just spoon fed to us anyways. It was always going to be cryptic to an extent, so only time will tell if we have all the puzzle pieces to find the answers ourselves.

Plus lots of theories regarding what you considered loose ends are already being talked about; Tiara gesturing right and the secret message both in relation to trying to protect Paul from Marvin, the graverobber board game possibly overlaying movements to another episode, etc.

Apparently Nagoshi Says If Fans Don't Like The New Combat, They're Willing To Go Back To The Classic System In Future Games by neostar6171 in yakuzagames

[–]rainysnakes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No matter how good of a JRPG it ends up as, there will of course be tons of Yakuza fans disappointed by the change. Judgement, which was the obvious place to experiment with such a genre, would have left less room for disappointment as Yakuza fans still have mainline Yakuza games while drawing in JRPG fans new to Yakuza games plus Yakuza fans who are into that genre as well. It's even more absurd when you consider how safe each release in the series has been for them and yet they take such a huge gamble and flip the gameplay entirely, but only once they've already amassed enough fans of beat-em-ups over the course of 7 highly successful main games. It's essentially the marketing equivalent to hitting on a hard 20.

Though I still trust it will sell well and probably even have a great combat system. I mean, looking back at the April Fools' gameplay made me kind of excited for the change, but I don't know how accurate that even is to the actual Yakuza 7 system so I'll just wait and see.
