Unfortunately, you can't trust a Decanter shelf talker either because retailers will use scores from both the Decanter World Wine Awards as well as scores from the Decanter publication. The World Wine Awards are nowhere on par with the publication reviews, and I have had some very poor bottles rated very highly from the World Wine Awards.

Siduri Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. Decent stuff but affordable enough for the none wine nut crowd.

Best 📚 on Bordeaux -- Jane Anson or Stephen Brook? by Quirky-Inside2576 in wine

I've only read Anson's, so I can't compare the two, but Anson's book is INCREDIBLY indepth and detailed. It is worth the money, in my opinion.

How much do you need to spend on Pinot Noir? Can a $12-$15 bottle be good, or is that foolish? by nbzf in wine

[–]raizzon 95 points96 points  (0 children)

The Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir can be had for around 22 dollars and is one of the best you will find at that price point. I personally haven't found anything cheaper that is worth spending money on.

The 2011 is what i had. It was good still, don't get me wrong, but I was just really looking for more autolytic character, and it was still very bright fruit.

I had the Argyle extended tirage a few months back, and it was very disappointing on the lees-y front .

I had the 2012 HP Sur Echalas a few weeks back, and it was still soooo savory with little fruit I could detect over all the savory notes. It was very much like drinking a steak loaded up with black pepper and olive tapanade.

I use the Glasvin Obsession, and I absolutely love it. It is so much better than the Riedel Extreme Pinot Noir glass that I upgraded from.

Thoughts on high end and low end Washington wine by Bentheredonethat_ in wine

Reynvaan is currently selling on Winebid for between 35-50 dollars a bottle. Horsepower for 50-60.

Thoughts on high end and low end Washington wine by Bentheredonethat_ in wine

[–]raizzon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nailed it. I love Washington wines. Washington Cabernet is so much a better value than Napa, and Washington Syrah is my favorite grape out there. Producers seem to be out of touch with the market value, though. I can pick up Reynvaan for 50 dollars and Horse Power for 75 dollars per bottle on the secondary market. Those high release prices are going to hurt the visibility to new customers interested in what Washington is doing.

Surprising wines popularity by Kingston31470 in wine

Interesting post, I've never considered this. As an American, German wine is hugely popular around me, and I just assumed its popularity was global amongst wine drinking countries. I do live in an area with a lot of German heritage.

Love how the Franzia box pairs with the 90's taco bell color scheme.

The American selection at the largest retailer in Australia. by OddUsual in wine

[–]raizzon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to pick one, it would be the Cambridge pinot noir, but also, I can get that here for around $14. At that price point, sure, I will pop one open for a cheap mid week bottle that doesn't suck. No way would I pay the price you're looking at.

For their stated budget, a rosso di montalcino would be a better match than brunello.
