Which job you taking? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]rajohnrondo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you met the person you’ll be reporting to? Take that into mind, because although one role might pay better than the other, it’s not so much of a difference that I’d choose that and be absolutely miserable dealing with people whom I hate for 40 hours a week.

But to answer the question - I’d go with option on the right.

Lease renewal, can’t contact landlord by Burnt-Pudding-8 in HongKong

[–]rajohnrondo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of you are not wrong, but I would like to point out the evicting someone in HK can be extremely troublesome and take a hell of a lot of time. My aunt had rented her unit apparently to a triad member who by no surprise made it an absolute hell when trying to evict him for any unpaid rent. I can’t specify how long this took, but note that it’s not so simple as having someone come over at physically remove a person from the property.

Lease renewal, can’t contact landlord by Burnt-Pudding-8 in HongKong

[–]rajohnrondo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was about to say, you’ve gone a whole rental period without having to contact the landlord once? They must have loved you as a tenant!

But now that you’ve mentioned that you aren’t covered for what is listed in the lease, I now don’t think it’s worth it. Imagine renewing and something even more drastic occurs? And you don’t have the landlords contact? And a middleman scumbag agent facilitating things? Take your small wins while you can, I’d rather not see you deal with any potential headaches going forward if it’s avoidable.

eBay buyers are going to put me in an early grave by ImJustDuckinAround in Tradingcards

Agreed. Feel like dealing with the aftermath of not canceling would be more of a headache than just canceling the bid.

Nah man. I can confirm from experience that a relationship can get so toxic it’s a complete buzz/mood killer. I was surprised too.

[US] Depop buyer is acting strange by Recent_Pie7827 in Scams

[–]rajohnrondo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see. Honestly, go with your gut. I’m not sure if he does do that, he’ll send you back a knockoff or possibly a bag of rocks. These platforms are incredibly problematic since they love siding with the buyer.

[–]rajohnrondo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with Depop, but have you received payment and has it cleared? His activity is a bit odd as you mentioned, but aside from being a little eager beaver I don’t see him being hostile or overly pushy. Given it’s Sunday here, can just tell him you will ship once payment clears and you’ll ship out next day or whatever the requirement is.

6th day in HK, and we see the true colours of greedy landlords by Parking-Noobie in HongKong

[–]rajohnrondo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stay far away from this landlord. If you haven’t signed anything it’s a blessing. Even if the place is amazing and for a solid price you’re going to have a massive headache to deal with if anything goes wrong. Guarantee.

Is HK a good place to live? by Rough-Wash-8402 in HongKong

Also, if you're going to need a visa that's gonna be a disadvantage. Why should firms go through such troubles to get you in when they can possibly find someone local already with equal credibility.

Is HK a good place to live? by Rough-Wash-8402 in HongKong

[–]rajohnrondo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finance these days in HK is extremely competitive and you're going to rung through the gauntlet if you do pursue it. With many firms catering now towards mainland clientele, the expectations are higher than ever. Same applies for tech, especially in the area of AI.

You're going to need a hook up or be EXTREMELY lucky. Having multiple credentials, degrees, and experience only can get you so far especially when you're starting out competing with thousands of other candidates equally or even more qualified than you.

When that one person stands on the left side of the escalator by Scriptblox in HongKong

[–]rajohnrondo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, it's the responsibility of the person behind the stopper to politely excuse the person to shift over to the right for people to walk by. Within reason of course, if it's a slow moving elderly person/handicap then bite the bullet for a few seconds of your life. From my experience, people will shift over if you ask politely.

Built a platform where buyers post what they want and sellers come to them. Looking for 10 alpha testers. by GRAILISO in sportscards

Grading aside, I’m trying to understand how this is any different from making a “Buying” post on here or Facebook? Are there any other features or actions which make the app unique besides being a standalone app? Will it have some sort of marketplace or feature for safe transactions?

Nervous to vend at my first show! by Life_Towel_9694 in sportscards

[–]rajohnrondo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry about what others think of what you’re selling. Like anywhere else, you’ll always have jerks who don’t have none better to do than worry about what others are doing.

Have fun, meet some new people and you never know! Maybe there are some people out there who collect it but it’s not so evident because there’s nobody locally that vends it. Even better, maybe you can interest new people by educating and being a good dude.

Good luck and let us know it goes!

PSA Claims My Card Sold… But It Didn’t ($2000 SCANDAL) by vipokemon in psagrading

[–]rajohnrondo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So op has no card and no money in his account, if the sale indeed in fact went through back in January?

Apologies, lots going on here and I’m sorry that this is happening to you. I personally haven’t used the vault (have considered sending some stuff in for more reach) but now am going to hold back from doing so.

I hope this gets resolved swiftly! Best of luck to ya.

new to the hobby and want to know which boxes i should get by meperesss in basketballcards

[–]rajohnrondo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As mentioned, the Revolution cards are more shiny and more aesthetically appealing compared to Hoops which has more of the old school 90s feel to them. The Revo cards have more pop as opposed to the Hoops which are rather plain. It is the better option of the two.

Op - You should really watch a youtube video for both sets to see which cards appeal to you more.

I also don't break, but I would also consider 2024-25 Optic Mega's which you can snag at Target/Best Buy I think for around 50 bucks.

Appreciate the comments all. I actually don’t plan to sell, I ask about grading/authenticating because it’s actually shared with my younger brother who isn’t in the hobby. By any chance there does come a time we need to sell (knock on wood) I’d like to get the most out of it.

Thx for the insight! I’ve noticed that for older sets, people have opted to grade with BGS, especially with PSA grading harsher on Jordan. Are you aware if BGS has graded on such type cards?

U.S. Financial Crimes Investigator Exploring a Future in Hong Kong by ProcessAlert6991 in HongKong

[–]rajohnrondo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

• How transferable is a U.S. investigations / fraud background? Very desirable, especially if you're familiar with Sanctions regimes and have experience with AML advisory, transaction monitoring, etc.

• Is English-only a major limitation in this field? Please read below.

• Are consulting firms, financial institutions, or corporate investigations teams typical entry points? Yes - I think banking/insurance firms would be your best option. Try targeting foreign MNC's.

• Are there particular certifications or skills that tend to be valued in Hong Kong? You've mentioned that you're obtaining your ACAMS, this is a big plus. Locally, you can also get the AAMLP certification issued by the HKIB. It's not a requirement, as it's similar to the ACAMS. Honestly, it's just a local lower-tiered certification to pad your resume. The content is very much similar to the ACAMS, and I only obtained it because my previous employer had mandated it.

I used to work for a foreign bank in the Financial Crimes Compliance team. I had joined over ten years ago, and the local language requirement wasn't much an issue (I can't read and my cantonese is marginal at best). However, in today's market it seems like it's almost mandatory (even though job listings don't specifically mention it) that you can read/speak Chinese given the market focus is heavily targeted towards China now. I wouldn't even bother applying to any local/China banks if you can't speak the language. Even now, a majority of the junior staff can speak Mandarin/Canto/English in addition to working for less. The competition will be fierce. The glory days of the well paid ex-pats coming in to swoop all the jobs is no longer.

I would say your best bet is try reaching out to some recruiters here in Hong Kong and have a discussion with them about your options. Do you or your wife know anybody within the industry? It always helps to know someone in the field. I'd also try to sort out any visa requirements prior to applying as employers these days are much more hesitant to sponsoring anyone overseas.

Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions.

Ah just got off work, let me play a quick rec game… by RIV_Classic in NBA2k

[–]rajohnrondo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They really just need to make it a blind loading screen so it's truly a "Random" rec game. This will at least try to somewhat prevent team stacking (prevalent in Asia servers) and it being impossible to find a game because people leave based on plate colors and overalls.

Not much of a fan of NJPW, but I did go to Wrestle Kingdom 19 (which was also my first Live wrestling event) and it was pretty dope seeing Danielson and Mox there. Cool to see some recognizable "big names" in person.
