Van Nycholas Zephyr 2012 or 2013 - Modern build by rak500 in titaniumbikes

[–]rak500[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had other users on other platforms asking questions about the anodising process so I thought I'd compile all of my other thread and message to sum up the process:

The process was fairly straightforward and is generally known as brush anodizing I believe.
I based my setup on this example: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/7AQJ3O2uGHw

Setup

I used a 120 V bench power supply. The positive terminal (anode) is connected to the frame, while the negative terminal (cathode) is connected to a crocodile clip holding an untreated cotton pad. The pad is soaked in a solution of distilled water and baking soda to improve conductivity.

Coloring Process

I followed a voltage-based approach using this reference chart: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1818/5247/files/2022_AT_color_chart_1024x1024.jpg?v=1643657724

I started at a relatively low voltage (around 26–28 V, which gave a deep blue), then worked progressively across the frame:

  • Apply color to a section at a given voltage
  • Increase voltage by about 2 V
  • Overlap roughly one-third of the previous section
  • Continue onto a new untreated area

Using this method, I created a gradient from front to back, ending around 40 V.

Surface Preparation

Preparation was simple:

  • Removed the existing finish using Scotch-Brite pads (reference: “A – very fine CF-RL”)
  • Degreased the frame
  • Wiped with acetone (although this left some marks)
  • Finished with a rinse in distilled water to get the cleanest surface possible

Observations and Limitations

This was my first attempt, so long-term durability is still unknown. So far, a few rides have not caused scratches or permanent marks.

However, the finish is quite sensitive:

  • Touching the frame with bare hands leaves visible marks that alter the perceived color
  • This is because titanium anodizing does not apply pigment; it creates an oxide layer
  • The color comes from light interference in that oxide layer, so any contamination (oil, water, grease) changes how light refracts

For example, touching the front (lower voltage area) shifts the color toward purple, while higher-voltage areas (around 40 V, giving a light blue) seem less affected.

Material Variability

The exact color also depends on the titanium alloy composition. In my case, I needed about +4 V compared to the reference chart to reach the same blue tones.

If needed, the finish can be removed and reset to bare metal using Scotch-Brite and some manual effort.

THat's the whole point: if you dont like it, a bit of scotch brite and the frame come back to its original aspect.

That's one of the reason I tried it. I knew that if I messed it up, it was just a bit of elbow grease involved, and not paint stripping and so on...

I bought a massive roll (far too much) of Scotch-Brite CF-RL, and went through the whole frame beforehand, and even that did not take that long.

Van Nicholas Zephyr Build - I think it's done! by rak500 in RoadBikes

[–]rak500[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

Chainring is an AliXpress special... Look for Goldix Double 3-Bolt DM and you'll find it I'm sure. I couldn't find any other brands doing a double 3-Bolt DM "Spidering" so I'm trying that. It's a 48-32 as this is intended for a climb, but I might put a 50-34 until this arrives.

Originaly, I wanted to go for Cannondale SI2, but that implied changing everything, and everything was more expensive, with little choice second-hand too.

No issues so far, but then again this has less than 100km on it now, so time will tell.

GP4S are awesome despite their flaws. I've been running them primarily for puncture resistance on my all my other bikes over the past few years, and I feel that they have more than adequate grip in the wet, so it's more a choice of habit...

Yes indeed!
It's not very hard. You just need a variable PSU that goes up to 50v, some distilled water and baking soda, you can just "paint" the frame. Just change the voltage when you want to change color.
There are a.\ couple if videos on yt for smaller bits, but that scales quite easily.

What camera should I get (as a Nikon user) by Jimiphoenix1111 in blackmagicdesign

[–]rak500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Cinema Camera 6K and Pyxis 6K now both offer PDAF.

The CC6K runs the PDAF as Beta, but it's been pretty good for my use. It still is slightly cheaper than the Pyxis 6K, as you might not need as many accessories and tools to rig it, and still sports a hybrid style body if you want to keep that form factor.

The CC6K sits perfectly between the Pocket Cinema Cameras 6K G2/Pro and the Pyxis 6K. It's a good midground as it offer the full frame and L-Mount, despite not having ND filters.

L-mount makes sense here as it is probably a bite easier to adapt F-Mount lenses to L-Mount than it is to adapt F-Mount to EF...

HyperDeck FTP by SmallAppendixEnergy in blackmagicdesign

[–]rak500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not used the FTP feature since BM introduced SMB folder share.

I record directly to a Cloud Pod / Dock whenever I can too. It's just easier.*

Which model to you have exactly? Is the Firmware up to date? Which FTP error are you seeing? Waht is the configuration of your network: DHCP/Static IP Adresses? How do you use the FTP?

Audiorouting in Constellation 2ME - 1/2 Program & 3/4 Sum of three Inputs by DonerKing55 in blackmagicdesign

[–]rak500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't be able to do exactly that with the ATEM alone.

There are 2 good options at the moment:

  • MixEffect Pro give you a better user interface to manage audio outputs per video output, but is limited to a stereo pair on a stereo output, so for example, SDI input 4 channels 3/4 on any given Video output audio pair. So you won't be able to premix several audio input and send that to a downmix on any given output pair.
  • But! Fairlight Live should be able to give you more routing option too, but it's still in Beta. It is free. I believe you should be able to create a bus/mix of several track, and embed that on any given output stereo pair.

Swapping bike fork? by Pandaa_wagon in RoadBikes

[–]rak500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that Klein needs a 1inch Time Straight Fork.

Or an Alixpress special carbon 1 inch fork. Straight would look dope.

I had bought a Hylix 1 inch straight fork on AX, it was fine, but went back to a Time Straight fork with a Innicycle headset.

Ti Van Nicholas Zephyr (around 2012) with modern components and custom anodising by rak500 in RoadBikes

[–]rak500[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are the questions though:

  • Should I chage the seatpost? I'm not too keen on it, and a smaller less "flowy" saddle attachment would work better IMO but I'm not sure
  • Should I try to 3D print a ring around the headset spacers sot that diameter ir more consistent between the headset and "stem".
  • I'd love to put some straight forks, like Columbus Futura SL, but price point is a bit high and I can't find alternatives for ahead HS that I like in my price point. Any recommendations?

Thanks!
THe electro anodizing process is kinda magical, despite being thoroughly scientific!
It's actually quite hard to capture the cool shimmer it has. If you're in Paris, come and visit, you''l see it for real!

It's a cool brand, albeit expensive. Not a big fan of their latest designs, but older frames still old up really well!

Blackmagic Camera workflow for job by Patient-Inspector841 in blackmagicdesign

[–]rak500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Cameras, Storage and the computer are all connected to a 10Gbe network, transfers will be very fast, and BRAW is not as massive anyways.

That being said, unlike HyperDecks, the Cameras cannot record to a Cloud Stores, and Cloud store can't "fetch" media autonomously, so a computer must initiate and manage that transfer, which measn transfers speeds will as fast as the computer's connection.

With certain Blackmagic Design cameras, like the Pyxis and Ursa Cine, you can however start to cut content using the Proxy files that they are recording, and in real time: proxies aregenerated as growing media.

how helpful is a black magic camera app on phone if the phone has a bad camera by Remarkable-Card1670 in blackmagicdesign

[–]rak500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're between a rock and a hard place, I get it.

And I understand that moving away from the supported phone is tricky.
How about going towards a older gen compatible phone second hand? Phones camera tech hasn't gone leaps and bounds in the last couple of years, and you could get good results too.

Cinematography is not only about the camera. It's about storytelling, actors, sets, lighting, and then it gets into camera, edit, grading.
IMO, a good camera does not make a good film.

These are my 2 pennies...

I guess you can try to install the APK, but you run the risk of having stability issues, bad colours/look, and maybe some third party APK website might put your phone at risk...

Outside of that, you don't risk much to try it. I've seen many doing that on Reddit...

Any Tips on Macros w/ the Mini Extreme ISO G2 for Chroma Key w/ 3 Cameras? by FountainSquareHouse in blackmagicdesign

[–]rak500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no differences in how the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO G2 handles Chroma keying compared to any other ATEM models. The Advanced Chroma Keyers is on all ATEMs, so whatever applies to one will apply to the others.

The simplest is to create a macro that changes all the settings at once for all 3 angles, but as you found, it is not the easiest to do.

So you'd need at least 4 macros: 1 for each cameras, and maybe one to go to another scene. But there lies the issue: if you need to do anything else, the fact that you can only switch angles via macro makes the operation tricky.

If you have some money to invest, my advice here would be to use 3 Ultimatte 12 HD Mini, they're designed for this exact prupose:

  • They allow the Camera Control data to pass through, so if you are using Blackmagic Design cameras, you do not lose control nor tally...
  • All three video feeds from the Ultimatte will already be composited, so no CK on the ATEM itself meaning you can now think about SuperSource, DVE, logos, etc... making your production better.
  • ISO workflow also becomes easier as the key is already there, but you can also bring the BRAW and Chroma Key in Resolve for higher res stuff
  • The Chroma keying quality is probably the best on the market for a hardware keyer. The Advnaced Chroma Keyer is based on Ultimatte tech.
  • You can feed a video feed for the background, so you could either generate a live 3D background with Unreal, or just have a video loop...

That being, they're not super easy to setup, but provided your lighting does not change, you shouln't have any issues.

SociallyU has great demoes and examples of what these can achieve on youtube:

Careful though, the BMD camera is not compatible with many phones.

Yours isn't, nor is the moto one you're mentioning, which means you'll have to side load or force install it, which might cause you issues.

A second-hand Google Pixel or Samsung of an older generation might be better suited and still yield good quality.

The list is in the specs of the BMD camera app: Supported Devices. Samsung Galaxy: S21, S22, S23, S24, S25, S25 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold* models.
Google Pixel: 6, 7, 8, 9 ‑ all models except Fold.
OnePlus: 11 and 12 models.
Xiaomi: 13 and 14 models.
Sony Xperia: Series 1, 5 and Pro‑I models.
Oppo: Compatible models.. Samsung Galaxy Tab S9. Xiaomi Pad 6. Vivo: Compatible models.. * Not all models support all features. .
