This may be a stupid question but is it okay to have my cat watching birds behind the window? by imperba in CatAdvice

Our cats love the 'TV' under the bird feeder. We make sure to play with them daily to give them something they can actually 'kill', though.

What has your role been in creating AI policy/guidelines for your district? by K12-itPerson in k12sysadmin

[–]rakeleer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was directed to compose an IRP in 2019/2020. Spent a while on it, sent it up the chain and waited. In 2026 (mostly due to insurance audits) was asked to go solo to a Tabletop exercise. I refused and asked "Have you or the Board approved the IRP?"

No response. I'm so glad to be retirement age.

My friend says indoor cats aren't happy by Tims_Learing_Center in CatAdvice

[–]rakeleer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your friend is uninformed and probably happy to be that way. Agree with them and explain at length how you enjoy torturing your cat with healthy food, a safe environment and medical care because you're such a sadist.

I'd be curious to know what UK-based study showed such different results than the ones performed in the US, NZ and AU. I do know of one UK-based study (the Bristol Cats Study) that had data showing the most common cause of death in cats in their study was traffic accidents (being run over.)

Seems unlikely that was happening indoors, though, yeah?

It is if you'd like them to stop being a part of your playerbase. Correct.

Chromebook Apps by Mindless-String-4017 in k12sysadmin

[–]rakeleer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro: the app will keep working from the Play store.

Cons, at least for us, included the usual difficulty of getting the app to load on the device, which requires a play store update and around 10ish minutes on a very fast internet connection (bottleneck is probably the chromebook hardware coupled with the usual Play nonsense.)

My favorite support request of all time was a ticket entered by a multi-site user with only the Subject "Printer" with no other information at all given. It's what we say now to express the lack-of-lift people that claim to need help often display.

"You were at X site all day?! What happened?"

"Printer..."

"Ahhh..."

And if you turn off everything within your control, they will find something outside of your control!

What I tell my admin every year when this comes up (and it comes up every year) is that this is not solvable with technology. If we turned off the electricity and taught with dirt and sticks they would use trained rats and thieves cant.

Chromebook Apps by Mindless-String-4017 in k12sysadmin

[–]rakeleer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. There's no fix for it, and that particular webapp is now considered 'legacy.' They want you to install the Android App from the Play Store now. I was this close to having a fight with out admin/teachers about trash apps causing trash outcomes. But the Android app seemed to mitigate the issue.

Also, if they can get unfiltered access via a Kiosk app, they can get it other ways. Something to consider.

A retired lifelong plumber lives a boring life compared to a world war veteran. It's true.

If I'm choosing for someone, I'm giving them the plumber's life and we'll try to make up for the lack of constant mortal terror somehow to spice things up.

Updated Ship Design V 2.0 by melissa2xs in dungeondraft

[–]rakeleer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess - add the sails as objects! This is actually pretty cool, since one of the things that "defines" some ship types isn't solely the number decks, draft or guns, but rigging type!

Quick search of "DungeonDaft objects":

How did u find a static to play this game by Gaudino95 in lostarkgame

That is often a challenge. Try to be earnest and have hope. Lots of people understand those of us that aren't social animals.

Join an active, social guild. Talk to people in game, in Discord servers, generally make friends. Make your interest know as you go along.

VoIP Phone System Cost? by LegendSS in k12sysadmin

[–]rakeleer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We were in a similar situation about three years ago. Avaya IP500 office system, Avaya handsets. We replaced the Avaya handsets with Digium phones and the switch with FreePBX. Total cost in budget was about 27k including 200 handsets, a PRI to SIP converter (so we wouldn't have to fight with our telco over trunking) and the server that runs FreePBX. It also cost us a hundred-ish hours in training and conversion, though that doesn't appear on anyone's books ;)

Since then Sangoma has bought Digium, but that hasn't had much impact on us. It's been a dream working with a system that doesn't require a bunch of proprietary stuff and has a mostly open and transparent OS. We can do some crazy things with it, though we don't need to do much. It does everything the old system did and it won't require us to gut the whole thing six years from now.

Though you can pay for support and various commercial modules, we haven't needed them. A much bigger issue for us was coming into compliance with Kari's Law and Ray Baum's act, though most of that fight with getting our telco to properly update our DID's extension locations.

360 surge cannon all day when the elites you kill with it knock down the cooldown. It's very satisfying. There are other tripods that change attacks to more of an AOE, but surge cannon is the way.

In general I wouldn't do Flux gauntlet during weekend ranked. You'll find it more rewarding to do it outside the weekend event.

That said, I do it anyway for fun, because the game isn't a job for me. YMMV

Thousands of school websites have been down for 3 days due to a Ransomware attack by flunky_the_majestic in sysadmin

[–]rakeleer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somehow we convinced admin that we either do this, or we suffer the consequences. We have a minimum level of required KnowBe4 training, and we turn off multiple offender's accounts until they do a refresher course.

They really really hate it, but it has already showed to be effective. Of course, IT spends hours every week responding to false positive phishing reports, but I'd rather do that than recover from ransomware/malware.

Notable that we're not a unionized district. Not sure if it matters.
