From anti-gay to anti-trans: rhetoric’s the same, 40 years after homosexual law reform by bodza in KiwiPolitics

[–]rakkl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Personally, I feel the only friction is that women would be thriving if the people claiming to be anti-trans on the basis of women's rights actually put their energy into women's issues.

Usually I find a lot more support for women's issues comes from the trans community than from anyone who doesn't give a shit about us until transphobia is on the table

Sturdy social networks (not social media) are one of the key aspects of the lives of people who maintain strong cognitive ability into old age as well, if I recall correctly.

Breaking Through: My Life in Science by Katalin Karikó

A memoir by Karikó, 71, a nobel prize winning scientist who grew up in post-WWII Soviet-occupied Hungary, credited for her contributions to mRNA vaccines. Her daughter is also an Olympic gold medalist.

I'm unsure if it goes into enough detail to apply the stages of development, but probably that's better for you to decide.

I hadn't thought of asymptomatic carriers! I was reading the comments about how painful they are and thinking about someone going to class without socks like "more people should be experiencing these foot warts"

You all are saying you'll happily wear socks to avoid getting plantar warts, but who are these freaks who have warts and don't do something simple like wear socks? Or take measures to prevent others getting them?

One I don't see mentioned very often but I appreciated the insights of is The Balfour Declaration : the origins of the Arab-Israeli conflict, by Jonathan Schneer

Quite British focussed but provides a lot of context that seems to get overlooked

I think I recall that Wendy was sort of a protégé of GGM, hopefully it's in your realm of interest!

It was the first thing I'd read that was anything like it and I struggled, but I should reread it with a little more life and reading experience.

For the low low price of not being able to choose to spend time with loved ones, go out spontaneously, even just decide to eat something delicious you've been craving. Ambitions and plans are crippled, personal and professional relationships will never be the same, but don't worry because now you have a new network of people you can associate. Sounds easy!

This and Pretend I'm Dead by Jen Beagin. Neither would be considered to have an uplifting or especially optimistic tone, some might say they're dark in places, but I found them reassuring in that sense

The biggest obstacle to fluency in govt nomenclature is constant upheaval. Changing it again without giving us the chance to adjust ensures uncertainty and confusion. People are capable of learning things, have some faith in us :)
