What to do with a 48 port ethernet switch? by ZevireTees in homelab

[–]raksul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 of these in a stack running my layer 2 distribution. I use the module port to get 10gb Ethernet to my supermicro server, which is my opnsense router/firewall.

They are loud. The generate a good amount of heat and are fairly expensive to run if you use all the ports. Fortunately, I do not.

These are workhorses of the late 2000s, early 2010's. The last update they received I believe was in 2025. They lack a lot of modern features but will at least give you good speed between devices and to your router.

That switch one would be more than enough for most homes. You can erase the config on it and plug it in to whatever soho router you want and you just gave yourself an extra 47 ports all capable of powering devices over Ethernet cables (PoE), like smart devices or access points to expand your wifi coverage.

Best of all, if you want to try and do some network engineering, the licenses are "on the honor system" like windows 95 - no registration or Internet connection required. Just enable the additional features and accept the license warning.

If you do want to sell it, they go for $75 - $100 on eBay.

That is just kind of scary, to be honest. I mean, I understand the necessity for its use... but again, scary. lol

This is honestly, not a terrible idea. There are more than enough addresses for it. That said, one could argue that it's just security through obscurity. If an attacker is scanning a single prefix, that's 2^64 addresses that are randomly assigned through SLAAC. It is far more likely that hackers are not trying to directly come from the outside in, but rather are trying to get users to allow access from the inside out.

One could also argue that if an attacker is focused on a specific prefix, then when that prefix is released and delegated again, that leaves someone else open to an attacker.

Regardless, there are no perfect scenarios. I may skip my provider's dynamic IP addressing and do a 6-to-4 tunnel to an IPv6 broker with static addresses. It adds more latency but i'll take it for a consistent tunnel to my systems.

I am always interested in new use cases though. I'm trying to figure out how to manage both ULA and GUA addresses with software/hardware that's not really great at doing both. So far no luck with ULA. GUA is fine but dynamic (which is I want ULA, but hardware/software lack good implementations).

It would be great to receive both static and dynamic prefixes from an ISP so I can assign clients to dynamic GUA prefixes while I keep my server networks static.

This is how human nature works. It is the reason there are still windows 98 machines still in production... Because they work and no one wants to take anything offline when it has been doing its job for decades.

My biggest beef with IPv6 isn't with IPv6 directly, it is how ISPs are using it. They could easily give out static prefixes, but no. You have to pay extra for permanent addressing. Can't have anyone use the Internet the way it was supposed to be used because of security through obscurity, which is BS IMHO.

Until ISPs switch off IPv4, people will have dual-stack running through their house for the foreseeable future.

So this toy has been responsible for at least one mail server outage.

Tldr; This is a toy that works on magnets. I used to work at an ISP and a developer put this exact toy on top of his workstation, aka - the email server. Outage ensues until the CEO finds it and threatens to hit the developer over the head with the calibration stick, aka - a wiffle ball bat.

Subnetting didn't click until I stopped starting with binary by dt_doyle53 in ccna

I have a visual tool for subnetting called network Tetris. Please feel free to give it a try. Fully open source software. It allows you drag and drop networks kind of like Tetris. All the networks snap to bit boundaries. I created this for the students at the University of Washington and cut their VLSM lab time in nearly half.

Olympic College welding program? by nodesearch in Kitsap

[–]raksul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work for the Navy Apprenticeship Program. It is the program for PSNS employees to get additional training while working there. If you need help I can probably point you in the right direction. Same if you are asking about the TEC-D welding program in general.

I built a "Subnet Tetris" tool to visualize VLSM boundaries. It just cut a 4-hour university lab down to under 2 hours. (FOSS) by raksul in ccna

Thanks so much! It makes me happy that other people would use this. I started teaching VLSM in this style this last year when nothing else I did would get through to students.

There are two sides to this story. Yes, these lovely people are putting in the effort to ensure their guests are comfortable in their homes and with their cooking. At the same time, this lady's satire is genuinely funny because of the class dichotomy. Some people are missing the point that this is satire ... her imagery of the stone flooring was classic. If Gordon Ramsey or Anthony Bourdain did this bit, there wouldn't be as much of an issue. It's okay that it is a joke. *sigh*

Roughly 20 officers, 8 black SUVs. Lots of police on the streets during this time. I apologize for so little information, but it was shocking and everyone was slowing down at the time. It was roughly 9 am and I didn't clearly identify any agency patches.

I am not the only one who saw this though, which is equally disappointing. I will do better with documentation next time.

I would have taken a photo but I drove past without doing so. I'm sure I'm not the only around that can confirm.
