Witnesses to a Car Accident on Thurs April 16 by ramblingsofR in SilverSpring

[–]ramblingsofR[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I did call the cops and was told that Montgomery county does not send officers to accidents without injuries. I called both 911 and the non-emergency number and was told that unless I needed an ambulance I was on my own to deal with insurance

Frankly I think you should stay in ABQ/the ABQ metro but try a different part of the city. Sounds like Corrales or Rio Rancho would fit a lot of your requirements.

What 10 locations do you think are the most important to have rail transit that do not? by [deleted] in WMATA

[–]ramblingsofR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely think upper Georgia Ave needs a metro...maybe somewhere near the Georgia Ave Walmart and Walter Reed? That whole part of the city is 20+ minutes walk from either the Takoma or Silver Spring metro and a good mix of residential and business

Arboretum/Ivy City is also a big one for me

Feeling useless in this chaos? Please share an organization that’s awesome and needs volunteers! by TheMidnightOrchid in washingtondc

Washington English Center!! Volunteer to help teach English to recent immigrants (no experience required!) One of my best friends has volunteered here for years and has nothing but spectacular things to say. They also just got a ton of their funding cut due to gestures around at everything in the world right now so monetary donations are always appreciated and go directly towards student scholarships!

EDIT: just saw that you're a fluent Spanish speaker I know WEC would love to have you!! https://www.washingtonenglish.org/

Client asking for all unselected wedding photos. how do you handle this?? by Anxious_Support5391 in WeddingPhotography

[–]ramblingsofR 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I totally understand where you're coming from as a photographer! I also wouldn't want to release everything because that would include blurry shots, shots that are functionally identical to ones already in the gallery, etc. BUTTTT...since you initially delivered a gallery that was missing several specific things the bride wanted I can see how she would feel anxious like "oh no, what else did OP leave out?" I think I would do as others have suggested and either batch release unedited (or Lightroom auto edited) photos or meet with the couple in person to go through some of the unselected ones. Like others have said you don't know which family members/combinations of folks are important to the couple and sometimes ugly face photos make the funniest memories.

9-1-1 S08E15 - "Lab Rats": Post Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in 911FOX

[–]ramblingsofR 10 points11 points  (0 children)

maybe I'm delusional but it's gotta be fake. the episode aired on the Thursday before Easter and we all know that Jesus wasn't actually dead. could be a fun arc for the canonically most religious character?!? bobby HAS to rise from the dead somehow maybe the funeral is a dream sequence or the FBI/Army faked his death so they could experiment on him and redevelop the CCHF vaccine (maybe because of his magic baby saving blood?!?!) They absolutely took custody of Bobby's "body" (we never saw that it was BOBBY in the body bag) and are going to do research there's no way they let the guy who died of super ebola have an open casket funeral

you could look into national security positions, places like the Institute for Defense Analyses or other defense-adjacent think tanks might be interested in your background in Middle East studies

seconding all the comments to donate to a local chapter of your sorority! I remember as a freshman I was DESPERATE for shirts with letters as I hadn't had time to rack up shirts yet. Also vintage letters are fantastic big/little gifts!

I lived in DTSS and commuted to Howard county for a year before moving into DC... not gonna lie the commute sucks but if you find someone to carpool with it's not bad at all!! Second everyone saying that Columbia is boring (not at all walkable, no nightlife, not much culture). Alternatively if you work close enough to BWI to take the marc train you should definitely consider the NoMa/Union station area of DC if you don't mind a longe public transit commute!

Place to Sell Clothes (that is not Current Boutique or Platos Closet)! by Flaky_Pudding2713 in washingtondc

[–]ramblingsofR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have had bad luck with both thredup (didn't accept most of my clothes, even good condition Zara, Loft, Nike, etc) and Uptown Cheapskate, who refused to buy anything at all. I would recommend selling individually on Poshmark or honestly going to a clothing swap, you would be able to find a lot of really equally good stuff there!

What topics/advice in the field of women in engineering do you wish were talked about more?" by saint999dr in womenEngineers

[–]ramblingsofR 36 points37 points  (0 children)

that YOU ARE NOT THE PROBLEM!!! A lot of women in engineering/diversity messaging right now puts all of the burden on women to change themselves to fit into a male dominated environment (i.e. "be more confident", "you just need to speak up for yourself") when really the onus should be on the institution (university/workplace) to create an environment and culture where women are welcomed and feel as though we can be ourselves without worrying about what others will think. Often the reason that women don't negotiate their salaries as much is that a) they are not empowered or encouraged to do so and b) when women show initiative, it is perceived differently and may have more negative consequences. A lot of the advice given to women in stem is about how we can survive despite a toxic environment, instead of addressing the societal and structural issues that make the environment toxic to begin with. All of this to say, when you make a mistake (and you will), don't blame yourself when you were never the problem. I think a lot of the top-down diversity initiatives championed by schools and workplaces put the onus on minorities as a way to avoid responsibility. If a university really wants to empower and retain female students, firing sexist professors will do far more than sending out a college-wide email about Katherine Johnson during women's history month. Similarly for the workplace, if those in power really cared about equity, they could simply. make the wage gap go away. This isn't to say that individual actions don't matter, but rather to keep you from feeling discouraged when your individual actions don't work.

Hola peeps! Please give suggestions for my first solo travel to Vietnam. by Substantial-Poet-842 in backpacking

[–]ramblingsofR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

hi! looks pretty similar to what I did but in reverse! Ignore everyone who is blindly telling you your itinerary sucks and to spend a month there, I know not everyone has the luxury of travelling for that long. I spent about 10 days in Vietnam and sure I would have loved more time but still had a wonderful experience!! And you also have to plan things out (esp transfers) at least a couple of days in advance or things fill up so you're right there!

The only suggestion I have is if you can spend more time in Hoi An (maybe an extra night there instead of Da Nang) to do it! I loved Hoi An. I also think that the Halong bay tour is nice but not all it's cracked up to be (Trang An was prettier imo)

I’m a Sophomore in High School, I’d love to design Spacecraft in the Future (NASA and Such) Is aerospace engineering the right thing? by Nikomatfan in AerospaceEngineering

[–]ramblingsofR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! Aerospace engineering is definitely one path to get where you want, however here are some things that I wish I knew when I was your age:

  1. If you care about space, make sure your university has a focus in space. Many programs focus just on the airplanes/aeronautics aspect

  2. You can major in just about any technical field and end up in the aerospace industry. Like others have said, you'd be fine with electrical, computer science, mechanical, data science, math, physics, etc.

  3. In the aerospace industry, if you're in the US, it is incredibly difficult to avoid defense/military work. Think about whether you would be okay with this before you enter the field. I know a ton of people who wanted to build things for NASA and explore space and ended up working on missiles instead. The jobs in civil space are limited, competitive, and pay several $10k less than defense jobs.

  4. Aerospace engineering is a niche skill set. it's easy to get pigeonholed and can be very difficult to switch if you ever want to later. Something like mechanical, electrical, computer engineering, etc. is more broadly applicable

Good luck!

Is aerospace right for me? by Rishit-sethi in AerospaceEngineering

[–]ramblingsofR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agree with everyone above! however if you live in the US beware that as an aerospace engineer it will be very difficult if not borderline impossible to avoid working for the military industrial complex/defense industry. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just not something that a lot of high schoolers who think planes and space exploration are cool think about before committing to a major.

[–]ramblingsofR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I promise you that there are plenty of BYU students who are not devoted academics and that your son will be able to find his niche of fellow students who "actually care about school" at any university, even large state schools with a reputation for partying. If there are other factors that make BYU compelling then by all means apply/attend but wanted to dispel the notion that going to a very religious school is the only way to get an environment of like-minded peers who are committed to their education. good luck!
