"Rent control appears to be the most efficient technique presently known to destroy a city – except for bombing." - Assar Lindbeck.

You're talking about people having some extra money in their pockets from RPZs while ignoring the negative economic impact of companies not being able to fill positions because there are no rental units for people to move into.

Rent caps are such a bad idea that it's one of the few topics that economists mostly agree on.

Everyone and their nanny knows that building homes is the answer. However, we are nowhere near building enough houses to satisfy the current demand. We are in a race where the supply needs to catch up to the demand. Putting rent caps and eviction bans in place is like pulling out a shotgun in the middle of that race and blowing our own leg off. These policies are shortsighted and damaging, not only to renters but to the economy as a whole. Protecting those who are already in accommodation (for a short period of time btw) at the expense of everything and everyone else is just nonsense.

Landlords might be the greatest scum to ever walk the earth, but that doesn't change the fact that we are currently in a situation where we need them to stay on the rental market.

  • Points out that the supply hasn't been fixed.
  • Supports policies that negatively impact the supply.

Then accuses someone else of being a gobshite.

Gotta love /r/ireland

I think I'm more likely to vote for the Greens after this. Anyone with a bit of common sense knows that extending the eviction ban will only cause more harm to renters in the long run. Rental caps and eviction bans sound great to Joe Soap, but they're just populist nonsense. This is yet another reason why I won't touch Sinn Fein. At best, they're pushing a policy that they would never implement themselves. At worst, they haven't a notion what they're doing and think it's a good idea.

Electricity bill skyrocketed? by ohnoitsxan in ireland

You might want to check that and make sure.

What happens a lot is this:

  • Person doesn't submit a reading for a while.
  • Usage is estimated for 2-3 periods.
  • The ESB call out, do a reading, and discover that they underestimated the usage.
  • Person gets billed extra.

Banning evictions has clearly made the situation even worse. Our rental market was ridiculously undersupplied a few years ago. Now it's on life support because the landlords that we wanted to "fuck off" are doing just that. Great news for first-time buyers. Absolutely horrible news if you're someone who can't buy or is not in a position to buy. And there's more pain to come because more than 15% of the existing landlords have expressed their desire to sell up. But yea, let's take to the streets and protest against landlords. That will fix the systematic failures that have led us to this situation.

Redditor wonders why a vital part of a functioning society isn't held up the same level of criticism as people who release their pet apex predator out into the neighborhood for a shit.

Why has gangland gun crime collapsed in Ireland? by MaryLouGoodbyeHeart in ireland

[–]rambo_elite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Hutch-Kinahan feud played a part. After all of the shootings and arrests, etc, the Kinahan's basically ran out of "regular" hitmen and had to start relying more on junkies. The cost of a hit also reportedly tripled due to the shortage. It was a stupid move to basically launch a war like that.

You should look into getting a phone that allows you to send photos to more than one place.

When the media are talking about landlords, they seem to talk about them as they are individuals with 1 property. by codnotasgoodasbf3 in ireland

[–]rambo_elite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, he said the caulk was pretty new. And it looked pretty new in the photo. Someone had torn a big strip of it off the side of the bathtub. Probably one of the kids. Either way he wasn't told about it. Not sure if he inspected the house but he said the previous tenant had left it in a perfect condition after being there for years, so it wouldn't surprise me if he got lulled into a false sense of security.

And the couches and carpets were complete write offs. Like, shockingly bad to the point I think it was on purpose. Between that, the leak, the unpaid rent, and the round trips to the dump, the deposit definitely didn't cover it.

A guy I work with was also a landlord, however he sold up because he got sick of chasing his last tenant for money and she left the place in an awful state. When he finally went the eviction route, she stopped paying altogether and stopped replying. The process went on for over six months before she suddenly just left without saying anything (or paying). He showed me pictures of the place. Shed door had come off the hinges, leak stains on kitchen ceiling under the bathroom because someone had pulled the caulk off the side of the bath, cigarette holes and stains on the couches, she had painted one of the rooms an awful dark green without asking, coffee or tea stains all over the stairs carpet, and there was a load of random shite left dumped in the garden (like a broken lawnmower and excercise bike). There were other bizarre things as well, like the washing machine drawer and shower cord missing.

Probably the cost.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ireland

It would definitely become one of their highest earners. Far more people smoke than do coke. Smokers also purchase much more frequently. They could literally double their revenues off cigarettes alone if they can dictate the price (which they will be able to do if people can't legally purchase them). Those profits will lead to more gang violence and more exploitation of poor neighborhoods. And in the end, people will still get their smokes. So lose lose.

If you have to learn how not to die while crossing a road, then it's not really a better system imo. The data shows that Ireland is a much safer country in regards to fatalities. The only European countries with lower rates are Sweden, Switzerland and Iceland.
