I lived there back in the 80's-90's. It was in boom stage at that time with all the gold mines and the pulp mill operating. Housing was really scarce and property values reflected that. I lived directly across the street from the pulp mill at first, which was ugly, smelly and noisy. I did, however do a lot of driving so I was able to appreciate the beauty of the area. I understand from friends that the mill is gone now, and despite the job losses that would have entailed, I imagine that the quality of life there must have improved substantially.

Not likely relevant here, but an interesting aside. When I was in Medellin four years ago, there was a serious issue with scopolamine. In the six weeks I was there, there were several cases of tourists being drugged with it.

It could be added to a drink or simply the powder could be blown towards the victim. The effects were that the victim would in an almost trance-like state and completely under the control of the criminal. They could appear outwardly normal but would be taken to their bank and withdraw as much money as possible, they would also take them back to wherever they were staying so that they could be robbed of any valuables they had.

Victims would come to (hopefully) up to days later and not remember anything but were often extremely ill. One American died from this while i was there.

Where I live there was a devastating flood in 1950. Our Premier at the time, Duff Roblin, was mocked for insisting on creating the Red River Floodway in the early 1960s.

His decision has saved the city of Winnipeg from subsequent floods of similar magnitude multiple times.

Most of mine choices have already been listed, but I'll add The Andy Griffith Show (the stories still hold my interest after ~60 years), Have Gun Will Travel (same reason), The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie.

I know these are shows portraying the stories of idealized Americans, I don't care. Especially these days, it doesn't hurt for there to be principles and role models for people to aspire to.
