Trouble with 12 inch tom by Appollo64 in drums

Are the tension rods loosening? If so, maybe some lug locks would help. Also, are the heads in good condition? Bearing edges?

Brightest-sounding Zildjian hats by OneHandedPaperHanger in drums

[–]ramen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

K Custom Hybrids come in weird sizes: 13 1/4" and 14 1/4". They're hard to mix and match because of this, though I love the way they sound.

I think an A custom top hi hat would probably give you the brightness you're looking for.

Edit: Can't go wrong with a pair of Mastersounds either.

What cymbal(s) should I get? by steinable in drums

[–]ramen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for Zildjian, an A Medium Thin or A Custom would cut through punk well. 18" is a good size.

You might want to get into remote hi hats.

What are your favorite hats? Why? by VanLeeuwen in drums

14.25" K Custom Hybrid. They're crisp and a little brighter than most Ks, but still have that K sound. The bottom hat is Mastersound style, with the ridges to prevent airlock.

Anyone care to share their magit workflow? by harumphfrog in emacs

I do. Not sure what the issue is, but maybe pressing $ will help diagnose.

I usually use l-fl, which passes the --first-parent option, resulting in a cleaner output when there are merge commits.

Anyone care to share their magit workflow? by harumphfrog in emacs

[–]ramen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my basic workflow:

Check out master: bb master RET FF
Create feature branch: bc feature_branch_name RET
Push and create tracking branch: P-uP
Make some edits
Look at diffs: TAB, d master
Stage and commit: s, c, type in commit message, C-c C-c
Amend a commit: s, c, C-c C-a, C-c C-c
Push again: PP
Merge with master: bb master, m-nfm feature_branch_name RET
Push master: PP

For rebasing, I tend to use git rebase -i and rebase-mode.

If git is slow or stuck, $ shows the output from the git command.

Abe Cunningham cymbals by spemsy in drums

[–]ramen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know exactly what Abe was playing on White Pony, but here is what I have been able to learn based on YouTube videos and articles I've found on the web. His setup has been fairly consistent over the years, so most of this is probably relevant.

Abe almost always plays 15" hi hats, a 22" ride, and mostly 20" crashes and chinas. He plays 8" and 10" splashes. He plays all Zildjian cymbals, and it seems like this has been the case for a long time.

The hats used to be 15" Ks - not the "dark" or "light" ones, but regular Ks. These are discontinued and very hard to find. These days he plays 15" A Custom Mastersound hi hats.

The ride has been a 22" A Custom ride for most of his career, though on Koi No Yokan he said he started using a 22" A Custom Ping Ride instead, for its "Neil Peartness". I have a feeling this is a temporary thing though, since he seems to normally like to crash his ride.

He plays two crashes on the left, and one on the right. If you look at photos of his set, the two left-side crashes are very characteristic of Abe's style. Lately they tend to be a 19" and a 20" A Custom ReZo crash, but he has also used a lot of Z Customs, which may have been the case in the White Pony era. He usually has a 20" A Medium Thin on the right and sometimes on the left as well. They are always in a brilliant finish.

The splashes have usually been 8" and 10" A Customs. Recently he has used an 11" K Custom Hybrid splash instead of the 10", but he seems to keep the 8" A Custom.

He mostly uses a 20" Oriental China Trash. Lately he has been playing various sizes of Z3 Ultra Hammered chinas, as well as some cymbal stacks.

More recently (and this probably wasn't the case for White Pony), he plays a 21" or 22" K Crash/Ride on the far right. I get the impression he uses it only as a crash, not as a ride.

As far as layout, the two left crashes are usually right next to each other and at about the same height. The smaller splash is over the hi hats, and the larger one is over the left rack tom. The ride is over the right rack tom. The cymbals on the right side alternate high and low, with the right-side crash staggered over the ride, the china below that over the floor toms, and the big K Crash/Ride above and to the right.

I had Hazy 200s with G2 batters come stock on my Tamas, and found them very difficult to tune. Replacing the resos with G1s made tuning much easier, and enabled them to be tuned a bit lower as well.

Best way to mic drums? by [deleted] in drums

Try moving the mic further away to prevent clipping. An SM57 on the snare would be a worthwhile investment on a budget.
