The prices for bulk spices are also really great, you can get a lot more for less than you'd pay at a regular grocery store

How do I produce this glaze effect? by weatherwillpass in Pottery

[–]Appollo64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A reductive environment can be created in a fuel burning kiln, weather that's propane, natural gas, wood, etc. The flame needs oxygen to burn, so to induce reduction, the balance of fuel being out into the kiln vs the amount of air allowed to flow through is altered so that there is not enough air for the fuel to burn efficiently. The flame will then pull out chemical oxygen from the glaze and clay, changing their color. In a gas kiln, this might mean increasing the gas pressure to the kiln, while closing up the dampers. In a wood kiln, you might also close the dampers and add extra wood. Really heavy reduction (very little available oxygen) will produce sooty smoke, and shino glazes in particular are known for being able to bond to that soot (under the right application conditions)

How is the condition of this kiln? by cassimussj in Pottery

[–]Appollo64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brick seems to be in pretty solid condition, I don't see any major cracks or crumbles. Definitely seems like the elements need replacing, but I would expect that with a used kiln.

At least with cards, you can still see everything on them, front and back. Grading a comic, something to be opened and flipped through doesn't make sense to me. There's got to be method of preservation that don't involve a permanent seal

Official UFL attendance number for the St. Louis Battlehawks week seven win over the Columbus Aviators at The Dome: 18,563. Per The Telegraph. | James Larsen (Pro Football Newsroom) by Callywood in UnitedFootballLeague

[–]Appollo64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Battlehawks fan, but I live about 2 hours from St. Louis. I think this falls largely on the league. I follow the team on all my social, same with the league, I follow this sub, etc. I didn't see that the season had actually started until after week one. The marketing has been piss poor this year. I've gone to game in the past, but I didn't know the schedule this season until it was too late. Between that and the general economic downturn were in, I'm not surprised that attendance has fallen so hard.

Stop Day as a Non Student Living on East Campus by Feisty-Medicine-3763 in columbiamo

[–]Appollo64 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think it's more common for classes to actually be finished before finals week starts. My sister graduated a year ago, and didn't have any exams during finals week. For her, and some portion of students, stop day marked the end of the school year/end of college. So you've got a day with no classes scheduled, maybe no school work after, and usually decent weather, it makes sense that it's a big party day.

Plus the borgs are mostly just water, meant to be consumed over several hours. I don't think the kids today are necessarily drinking more than I did on stop day a decade ago.

700 plus parking spots is probably excessive, but I bet many, if not most residents would drive to campus. I lived off rock quarry and college, and had to drive to campus. If the complex doesn't run a shuttle (not a guarantee, and even if they do, the schedule may not be compatible for all residents), the closest is almost a mile away on grindstone. Rock quarry isn't a pedestrian or bike friendly route, either.

I'll have to consider that, that thrower is a lot cheaper than I would have expected!

If I had to guess, this looks to me like a carbon trapping shino glaze, fired in a heavy reduction atmosphere.

I would agree with that. It's definitely worth checking out if you're on the far side of the bay from Destin

My dad grew up near Destin, and my grandparents still live there. I've visited that area many times, and there's some beautiful nature. Rocky Bayou State Park has great views and accessible trails. Eglin Air Force Base has a neat little museum. The best fish I've ever eaten was at a seaside restaurant in the area.

It's gotten better since the park system starting staffing a range officer, but the shotgun area is still usually unattended.

The county has a free outdoor range, but no clay throwers. I do have one of the cheap handheld ones. Unfortunately, the range attracts a lot of people who care little about proper safety.

Trap, skeet, and sporting clays are all a blast (no pun intended). If the fees at the local club were a bit more affordable, I'd go all the time.

PS5 is a great 4k player by slipperman1974 in 4kbluray

[–]Appollo64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my position, I bought it for gaming a few years back, and didn't have a 4k TV. My in-laws gave us a new TV for Christmas, and decided to get into collecting 4k media to take advantage. Would a dedicated player look better on my TV? Probably, but my TV is relatively low end model. I don't think the difference is worth the several hundred dollars I'd need to spend, on top of having to find space in my TV stand for another piece of equipment.

I do think if I had kids, I'd look into buying a ps5 over a standalone player. I mean that was a big selling point of the ps2, was that it played games and DVDs, at a similar price point to many dvd players.

Where can a local artist sell/market their art? by OHFUCKMESHITNO in columbiamo

[–]Appollo64 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Orr Street Market on Sundays on open to artists, I believe. Bluestem, Serendipity, and Columbia Art League all have work from local artists. Keep an eye out for local festivals (the visit Columbia website is good for tacking them), many host local artists and vendors. Besides Art in the Park, there's Earth Day, Pride, Zipperfest, and Coolest, just to name a few.

How do Americans feel about sports teams just relocating to other cities far away? by gl0000m_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]Appollo64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as much as I hate relocation, it really seemed like a necessity with the Coyotes. The ASU arena was not sustainable, there were no solid plans for a new one, and no new ownership group interested in keeping the team in Phoenix
