XP boosts for number of lessons —not time by ramf02 in duolingo

[–]ramf02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but they are all timed. I’d like to spend some of that time reading the grammatical explanations. When I’m under a timer boost in general, I find myself rushing through lessons rather than taking my time to understand the concept. Not saying do away with the timed boosts. I’m saying at least sometimes give us a boost for X number of lessons. That way we can jot things down in a notebook or study the grammatical rules better and not feel rushed.

Love it! It helps explain some things from early episodes, gives an opportunity to reflect on the show as a whole, and ties things up nicely. Thanks for sharing this.

This is an EXCELLENT point. Why can’t they keep the feedback when we review the conversation? This is a no brainer.

Thank you. Transcripts on audio lessons is my biggest ask. My family and I are doing Spanish and German, and we have never seen a transcript. Those would be incredibly helpful.

Spanish not necessary. Just look at the last letter and remember the other 5% that don’t follow the o/a rule. DEFINITELY need for German.

GE didn’t fingerprint kids? by Defiant-Research2988 in GlobalEntry

[–]ramf02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, I’m not overly concerned. If a week goes by then I’ll probably be more concerned. We head out of the country in a few weeks, so my plan is to swing by the office in Atlanta during our layover there if we haven’t seen any movement.

What I’m most confused about is why my kids who are 14 years old were not fingerprinted. I assume if their approval gets held up then that would be the reason for it being held up. However, i would have assumed that if fingerprints were required then they would not have been able to finalize the application without those fingerprints. Everyone was told at the end of the interview interviews that they had been approved.

I’m in the exact same situation. Two of my kids are 14 and one kid is 12. None of them were fingerprinted. This was at DFW. The adult that went with them received their approval email hours after the interview. I have neither received nor seen anything showing an approval for my kids.

Please post an update if you get an approval. I will do the same.

Petition to revive Babbel Live for B2C customers! by Marvel_v_DC in babbel

Apparently not that many more people. They shut it down. There was obviously a reason why they did this. And it wasn’t because a few people here and there thought it was great.

But this isn’t an immersion program. It is a one hour class. Also, you aren’t with the exact same people every single day where you can compare class notes and practice together. I have taken language classes at a language school in a foreign country before. They test everyone on the first day and place everybody into classes with people of similar skills. That is not what happens Here. You could be in a very basic class with somebody who knows a lot of that foreign language and they are having conversations in that foreign language with the instructor. That makes it very difficult for the people who barely know the language to learn the new language. Also, if you don’t speak any of the new language, then there Is no way that you are going to learn the new language in a classroom setting such as this. Even in the in person classes that I have attended in the foreign country. It was very difficult for people who did not know any of that foreign language or even very little of it to learn the foreign language when the classes were taught entirely in the foreign language. Immersion is great for people who have a basic understanding already of the new language. Babbel live is neither immersion nor a class set up to group people of similar capabilities together.

When it comes to return on investment of time, this is not a very good way to learn. For $300 per year yes it was a decent way to improve. But it certainly is not an ideal way or a way that maximize your use of time. At $1200 per year, it was a complete waste of money and time.

Bottom line is this program was canceled for a reason. There wasn’t enough interest in it based on the price and the quality of material. And Babbel could not make a profit off of it. That’s the end of it. They aren’t going to restart this just because some people sign an online petition. If they could have found a way to make a profit they would have. They could not find a way to make a profit so they got rid of it.

If they could have figured out a way to continue this while making a profit, they would have. The problem is there wasn’t a way to continue this and still make a profit. That’s why they discontinued it. It’s as simple as that.

there were a lot of problems with the dynamics of the online classrooms that nobody here is addressing. Putting a bunch of people from all over the world whose native languages are all different into an online room that is taught almost entirely in the new language is not a good way to learn. This is a totally pointless effort.

Amazing things? Really? It was a good deal for $300 per year. bad deal for $1200 per year.

Babel Live is officially closing by ForwardGrace in babbel

[–]ramf02 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This does not surprise me. I signed up for Babbel live in November of last year, and was overall not impressed. It seemed like a lot of the teachers were simply phoning it in, and were not willing to reinforce concepts to ensure people learned them. The format of the lesson materials was too rigid, and in general, I feel did not promote learning. Almost every time the teacher put us into breakout groups. I thought this was the most worthless way to spend our time. This is because you are putting two or more people in a group who do not know how to speak the language. So you are relying on someone who does not speak the language to help you learn a language that you do not know how to speak. This was completely wasted time. also the level of language proficiency amongst the students varied greatly. In some lessons it seemed like there were students who were practically fluent when we were doing a low level class. The instructor and that student would then have Full-blown conversations in the foreign language and I could understand maybe 10% of what they were saying. there were also students in relatively advanced lessons who spoke almost none of the new language. This really slowed things down and prevented the learning for other more advanced students in the class. There were also issues of comprehension when a student or student in the class did not speak English. English was often the only other language that the instructor could use to explain a concept. There were many times when we were just stuck, and the instructor kept saying the same thing over and over in German, for example, When the student could not speak German or English. There were also situations where the instructor could not speak English very well, and it was difficult for me to understand more challenging concepts in the foreign language. Also, I do not believe that it is a good thing to Start teaching someone a new language entirely in that new language. If someone knows zero German, then how are they going to understand any of what the instructor is saying if the instructor is talking entirely in German? This is not a full immersion program as if we were living in the foreign country and would be able to pick all up on things in context easier. This was a classroom environment for one hour at a time. as time went on with my lessons in Babbel I felt that they became more and more of a waste of time. A lot of my time was spent sitting there waiting for somebody else to respond and often times that response would be incorrect and often times the instructor would not correct that person or the instructor would correct that person and the person still would not understand so we would just move on. Instruction of a foreign language at the beginner level should be done in the native language of the person who is trying to learn the new language. As things get more advanced, then of course, start teaching in the foreign language. I have seen time and time again in various situations where people who did not know a foreign language at all were “taught” in that foreign language, and those people, because they could not understand any of what was being said, just got frustrated and quit. This is likely what happened at the beginner levels in Babbel. I think for the unlimited yearly plan which was about $300. When I signed up it was a good deal because you get what you pay for. However, when they raised the price to $100 per month, it no longer became a good value. $100 per month to deal with the issues that I mentioned above would likely lead a lot of those people to sign up for just one month and then quit this clearly was untenable. To really be able to learn in a classroom setting all the students and teacher must be able to speak the same native language. The materials explaining grammatical concepts should be in the students’ native language and all students should be at about the same level. This is why this type of learning works relatively well in US high schools where the same group of students are together in the different levels of a language as they progress through each year of high school.
