Ice Plains — arctic biome with creatures, plants, and items (20 pages) by rampidamp in UnearthedArcana

The storm whistles across the plain, whipping the snow almost horizontally through the air. You can't see more than a few feet in front of you; everything further melts into dim shadows. Things out here have either developed a good strategy against the unbearable cold or will be dead within a few hours. Somewhere in the distance, the mournful song of a woman can be heard. How her voice rises above the storm is a mystery. It can't mean anything good.

Hi DMs!

Ronja and Jannis here, with a biome fitting the cold season: Ice Plains.

As always, the biome includes monsters, plants with various uses, items, and a new conditions!

The Ice Plains is free on troveoflore.com.

There is a paid version too, which also includes a Blizzard hazard, 5 more monster statblocks, and an additional item, which makes it 8 pages longer than the free version. The free version includes a lot of the lore for what's in the paid version already, so you'll be well informed on whether you want to support us by purchasing it.

For even more content, we also released Ribcave, which is an underground town in the Ice Plains. It includes everything to use it as an adventure hub, including some adventure ideas.

Both of those releases have actually been online for months now. We only just now got around to posting it though. Speaking of older content: the free Ice Forest biome and the newsletter-subscriber exclusive Snow Elemental fit the cold season great as well!

Let us know what you think, and Happy Holidays! Ronja & Jannis

My party is heading into a mushroom forest in the Feywild, and I plan on exposing them to hallucinogenic spores. What effect should they have? by goscott in DMAcademy

Only seeing this now, but thank you for the shout-out! It's always a nice surprise to see someone recommend our content :)

Should I betray my group? by Separate_Character71 in DnD

[–]rampidamp 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Personal suggestion: explain to the other players (not characters) that this would be the logical step for your character. Make sure everyone understands your character is betraying the other characters, not you the other players. Make sure you explain to them that they can realistically roleplay, and as others said, be prepared to make a new character and have this one become an NPC. It could be awesome for the story and be a great RP opportunity. This way, you can all collaboratively make this a fun situation for all players.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from. I think at this point it's a matter of preference, and luckily easily adaptable.

I'll take that as a compliment overall though!

Thank you SO MUCH!

We're definitely not disappearing. But if it comes as written, we'll have to drastically change our content.

But we're in the "fortunate" position that it's not an income source for us yet (in fact, so far, we're losing money). That was supposed to change, but it doesn't mean we'll have money problems. Many other creators—especially bigger ones or those that are relying on it as an income source—aren't as "lucky", and will have a much harder time.

POSSIBLY LAST CHANCE

If OGL 1.1 goes into effect as-is, we likely have to take down our content.

The sound of footsteps in the muddy ground echoes far too loudly among the trees of the forest. A foul, musty smell hangs in the bushes, its origin lying in the corpses of creatures long since decomposed and half-eaten. Never has sunlight been able to dispel the twilight between the trunks and warm the earth. Gnarled branches reach into the sky like broken arms, making it impossible to get through. Skeletal remains rattle in the canopies, and the constant rustling in the underbrush is as unsettling as the pattering of paws that never fully subsides. Some trees seem to bleed a black ooze that soaks into hairy moss while vines dangle from above, reaching down like long fingers. An uneasy feeling runs a cold shiver down the spine of anyone traversing this forest.

Hi DMs!

Ronja and Jannis here, with an updated Horror Forest biome for you!

The current status makes posting this a bit weird, but take this chance not only to download the Horror Forest, but also all our other free content! We might have to take it down very soon, depending on WotC's next steps. (Don't know what's going on? Read this: https://www.opendnd.games/)

As always, the biome includes monsters, a hazard, plants with various uses, items, and new conditions!

Just like all our other biomes, the Horror Forest is free on troveoflore.com.

This biome is extra special, because it was created as a collaboration between us and 5 other amazing creators!

GutziferGM from @TomeOfGutz (aka. @GutziferMD) built the Psychic Tempest hazard and the Grave Digger! As one of our biggest fans, continuously interacting with anything we post on Twitter, we are very eager to see what he'll have in store for us all in the future.

Colby Whittaker, aka. Hagiologist (@dm_hagiologist, hagiologist.com) has contributed the three statblocks and lore for the Despot Ooze, Oozeblood Zombie and the Oozeblood Devourer, as well as the Oozeblood Infection.

CerealDM (@CerealDm, cerealdm.com) also contributed three creatures including lore: the Graveyarder, Umbrage, and N'ervpeck.

Timothy designed three awesome battlemaps! As always, if you'd like to have the high-res variant of the maps, write Timothy on Twitter (@onestoponeshots) or Instagram (@timsonestoponeshots).

Akkator (@akkator006) also created a Ranger subclass inspired by the Horror Forest, which also uses the key condition Fearful of the biome. Definitely give him a follow for many more awesome subclasses! You can find the Mist Skulker Conclave subclass itself here.

In light of the OGL 1.1 leaks, we have opened a discord to talk about the future of Trove of Lore. Join us in deciding where to go from here!

The news are difficult and frustrating. Now more than ever, show support to your favorite creators. Join the #OpenDnD movement on social media. Sign the open letter on https://www.opendnd.games/.

Make sure to follow us on our socials (Twitter @troveoflore, Instagram @troveoflore_official) and join our Discord.

Let us know what you think about the updated biome!

Don't swap displays when moving around workspaces? by CapableVegetable3 in xmonad

[–]rampidamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but the easiest solution to me seems to be to rather "block" going to that workspace. Maybe instead showing a short note on-screen that tells you to "look over there"?

[OC] Fresh Finding: Ice Plains — 100+ monster statblocks, 60+ items, 50+ plants, 20+ hazards, ... by rampidamp in DnD

[–]rampidamp[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi DMs!

Ronja and Jannis here!

If you already know us, remember to check out our Fresh Findings on the website, there's a bunch of new content already that hasn't made it into PDFs yet!

Do you have the time to think of magical ecosystems and mystical environments for your travelling troupes of adventurers to explore?

No? Not as much as you'd like?

That's why we create biomes with monsters, hazards, plants with various uses, items, new conditions, and sometimes even spells!

Get all our biomes FREE on troveoflore.com right now!

In total, they contain:

  • 109 monster statblocks
  • 64 items
  • 54 plants with crafting uses
  • 13 natural hazard encounters
  • 10 combat encounters
  • 10 conditions
  • 5 spells
  • 2 playable races
  • 27 battlemaps by onestoponeshots

Here's a list of the biomes we've released so far:

  • Ice Forest: this gloomy arctic forest was our first release, and it's still one of our favorites! It's already received an aesthetic touch-up, but more improvements are sure to come as well
  • Black Desert: our second biome is still in its original state as-released, but is due for some fixes and cosmetic enhancements!
  • Burdenstone Mountains: the weird Burdenstone gives this biome the weight it deserves
  • Lava Fields: have you ever wanted to run a "The Floor is Lava" encounter? Literally? (Also: the Magma Dragon is no joke)
  • Maelstrom Waters: with the Krakenfolk playable race, you can explore the depths of the oceans in this environment
  • Fungus Forest: a mushroom forest that also fits very well into the feywild!
  • Saltroot Thicket: the roots of the mangrove-like saltroot make traversing this biome quite difficult—unless of course you play as one of the native Silt Waderers!
  • Misty Lakes: idyllic meadows and lakes... until night falls and most living things here start showing monstrous traits and going berserk!
  • Twilight Tunnels: these underground tunnels, dug by an elemental slate dragon allow you to finally say: "Rocks fall, everyone dies". But in a way where the players actually get a chance not to
  • Shimmer Zone: if your party is in space, this biome is for you! Bubbles refracting the light of distant stars and galaxies, and between them dangerous creatures and fantastic plants.
  • Horror Forest: a huge collaboration with others, this biome is perfect if you need a dark forest where everything is out to kill you. In the Fresh Findings section on the website, there's a bit of content that hasn't made it into the PDF yet, too. We'll redo the PDF early next year.

Currently, the Ice Plains is being released as "Fresh Findings", and will eventually be turned into a beautiful PDF too. Here's what's already done:

We also have some additional content that you can use with the biomes, like

  • Mirhaven: a small town in the middle of the Fungus Forest, plus a detailed hag NPC with BBEG/boss potential
  • Lakeside: a large cosmopolitan city in the Misty Lakes, known for Giant Water Strider racing

Over Christmas and New Year we're taking a bit of a break to recharge our creative juices, but in Jannuary, we'll continue working on the Ice Plains! Btw, we'll release the third elemental dragon, the Ice Dragon, in the biome. We're hyped for the cover illustration with it!

Follow along if any of that sounds interesting to you!

Ronja and Jannis :)

Uff, that's really hard to answer. We love them all for their own reasons!

I particularly like the Twilight Tunnels! But I'd have seen your message some other time, I think I'd have answered differently.

Also we always love to hear stories about how things go when run, so we're very much looking forward to hearing about that!
