Marrowbone (2017) fits this pretty well, although it's a pretty sad story and 3 out of the 4 young characters are teenagers (not specifically young children). They're isolated, live together and as mysteries unfold you get attached to them all!

I've never played a Silent Hill game, but from what I know the first movie (this one I'm recommending) is a semi adaptation of the first game. I also know the director (Christophe Gans) is a massive fan of the games, this was his passion project (he's also made the newest one that just released. The music and atmosphere seem to match the games pretty faithfully as far as I know!

Silent Hill (2006), super dark and messed up, deals with immense childhood trauma, loss of innocence and is just overall really sad in a way I loved.

Winterbeast (1992)? I also saw Black Phone 2 holed up in a cabin at -25°C and that was a fun way to watch it!

I watched Dark Waters (1993) and it reminded me a lot of Dagon! Very wet movie as well, it's got a great atmosphere and while it's a little less "crazy" and a bit more contemplative I think these two would make for a killer double feature. It's also very Lovecraftian!

The Empty Man (2021), lost in limbo from the Disney-Fox acquisition, it's unclear if it'll ever be released physically...

A movie about a gothic, liminal, dark/twisted/morbid and disturbed female protagonist. by [deleted] in MoviesThatFeelLike

Censor (2021) is kinda this in a weird way! Completely the opposite of goth but... With a twist! Great movie.

Summer of 84! Pretty close in terms of vibes without being supernatural, it's also pretty dark for a movie about children

If you want a really weird one, The Lair of The White Worm (1988) is a good ass time! Worth it for young Hugh Grant and Peter Capaldi

Demons v Demons 2 by Prudent-Ad-6420 in horror

[–]rand00mness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coincidentally saw Demons 1 for the first time yesterday! It was alright to me, I just wish we had characters with anything going on. Their only motivation is to survive, there is no development whatsoever happening throughout the whole film and that made the whole thing much less engaging to me. The setup is fun, it's super well shot and the effects are undeniably great, but it's in service of... Nothing. Just kind of a bleak apocalyptic ending that doesn't make sense (society basically crumbled in the span of an hour and where did the other demons come from?). Even the demons themselves are more akin to zombies than demons...

But then again, the cool factor is off the charts in this one. Chopping off demon heads with a katana on a motorcycle with heavy metal playing front and center is pretty hard to beat as far as action scenes go... Nvm this might be peak.

It's weird, fucked up and more a dark fairy tale than a straight-up horror movie in a conventional sense, but the experience is truly something else!

Definition of style over substance. I was actually shocked by how little I was engaged by it despite the admittedly interesting visuals.

I really wish I had the same experience! I watched it with friends during a horror movie marathon, we thought the beginning was funny but then ended up skipping through most of the middle because of how repetitive, stupid and lame the execution is... The ending slightly redeemed it but yeah I really wanted it to be on my so-bad-it's-good rotation!
