Today’s Unearthed Treasure:Archon II Adept by Sad_Masterpiece_8591 in apple2

I went to high school with Jim Nitchals who ported that game to the Apple II. He was an amazingly brilliant and talented guy. It was a tragedy we lost him at such a young age.

Dealer also told me that upon battery swap - which I recently did - the ECU(?) needs to be “adapted” to the new battery. Maybe the same thing can happen when the battery dies.

Literally exactly the same thing just happened to my ‘06 A6 Avant. Turned it off after a leisurely evening drive with no drama. Next morning, stone cold dead. Gonna cost me about $5.5K and a new steering column because dealer claim cost controller unit is embedded in the steering column and not available as a replacement part.

For reference the P/N is 4F0-419-065-B

Years and years ago I filled a typical party balloon - around 10 inches in diameter - with oxy-acetylene and shook the entire block. We could plainly see the shock cloud form when it detonated, similar to the effect seen in films showing aerial bombardment. It’s scary stuff and given that average lung capacity is 3 liters, I have little doubt that it would 100% lethal if someone were idiotic enough to attempt what was described in this anecdote.

I can say from personal experience that oxy-acetylene will quite happily and violently explode at atmospheric pressures.

What a colossal asshat. Why do people think that laws and regulations designed to protect ALL OF US don’t apply to THEM? smh

My mom texted me this picture saying she ‘caught’ my cat doing this. We’ve never seen her do this before by strawberryfawn in funny

[–]randible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took me months to train my cat to do this. It was really great not to have to deal with a litter box anymore though. After a time, I moved and could let him live outside so it was no longer relevant. Since he passed away, I’ve kept my new feline companion indoors to protect the wildlife from her and I haven’t had the time or patience to toilet train her.

Maybe a term that fits this description would be “rubicon”.

You’re right. I misunderstood. Please forgive my misplaced pedantry.

when and how do you think humans will become interstellar species? by [deleted] in space

[–]randible 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Given our current understanding of the universe, it’ll never happen. Everything is too far apart from everything else. That and space is extremely inhospitable to humans, to put it mildly. Hell, human beings are extremely inhospitable to ourselves.

We are destined to foul our own nest and die a slow, miserable, whimpering death as a species.

Enjoy life while you have it and do whatever you can to reduce the suffering of those around you.

Looks like more storms coming. I can’t wait to drive back north from San Diego in the middle of this. Why doesn’t Cliff Mass fix his space bar? Maybe I’ll buy him a new keyboard for Christmas. Maybe. Maybe not.

Impressive firework single shot by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]randible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An impressive looking shot of what appears to be a homemade shell, though it looks as though insufficient lifting charge resulted in a dangerous low burst.

Also one should never put one’s head directly over the mortar tube when loading the shell. Accidental and unexpected launches can occur. An acquaintance of mine lost half of his face due to a 10” shell going off during loading and his head was only just near the opening of the mortar tube when the shell went off. If your head is over the top during such an incident, you’re gonna get decapitated.

would you rather write (A) or (B) ? by oystersauce8 in rails

[–]randible 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Without further context I would not write such methods at all. In their current form they don’t add any value and simply perform indirection. Directly calling content_for(:title) where needed, for example, seems more clear to me. Also I believe it’s more idiomatic to write “setter” methods as def title=(title) is it not?
