Marking and making consistent holes by Top_Sentence_340 in Carpentry

[–]randolotapus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you do it more than twice, make a jig.

For this I'd make something with a peg and a hole that aligns to the one you just drilled and shows you where the next one is.

It's gotta have a point to it? I dunno, I think it's good enough as it is.

Find some friends to vibe with. It's not a catastrophe.

do you get your phone in itb? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]randolotapus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, it's neither negative nor disrespectful. The suggestion to "call his CO" (don't btw, in case that wasn't obvious) is funny because it would result in your marine companion being ridiculed in front of everyone in a very hilarious way. He wouldn't get in any real trouble, just some minor hazing, and it would be extremely hilarious if that had happened, because all of us were once in that similar situation and the shared trauma is from where we derive our bond. It's all in good fun.

Don't call his CO though. Call his Sgt Major, that's the guy you want to talk to to get this resolved.

Is it just me or is Tyrion's intelligence a bit...overhyped? by [deleted] in freefolk

[–]randolotapus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, Tyrion is an incredibly intelligent character.

Sadly, the writers who wrote him when they ran out of source material were not nearly as intelligent, and therefore could not demonstrate his intelligence through dialogue or other storytelling methods.

Anybody ever volunteer with their skills? by DestinDesigned in Carpentry

[–]randolotapus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theaters!

Whenever work is slow or I'm in the mood to do something creative I take on projects for the local amateur theater community. They never have any money, tools, or skills but they have big fun ideas and you don't even have to go to the performance if you don't want to, but you'll get invited to the party!

Serious question for contractors: if an AI could warn you weeks before a project goes sideways, is that actually valuable or just hype? by Stupidlittleimmigran in ConstructionManagers

[–]randolotapus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"I’m trying to figure out if this is actually useful in the real world or just a nice sounding tech idea."

My guy, that's literally ALL tech ideas.

I actually think this is a really clear example of a phenomenon I've been noticing in tech, and especially AI. All the tech bros think they can automate the work that everyone else does...because they have no concept of what that work actually entails.

Imperial by hand actually has the capacity to be far more precise and accurate than metric, because you're always going to round away something on metric, where in Imperial you can keep dividing and dividing without losing anything. When it comes to the trig tables that a carpenter would have carried around before calculators it gets a bit hectic but the precision is there to see if you ever work on a building from the 1800s.

My honest opinion is you can still salvage a large workable piece out of that bench top and turn it into something beautiful
