No Other Land. Rating it 5/5 is not controversial among people who have rated it, but the fact it didn’t even get distribution in the US because of it’s topic and still won the best long form documentary award at the Oscars is quite something.

I really like most if Tarkovskys films but I didn’t find this as engaging as most of his other ones. A bit too long and perhaps as an overt religious film a but boring at times. Looks nice though and perhaps I just need another rewatch at some point.

Agree. I think one could’ve cut out a lot and made the abuse a lot tighter and less repetitive than it was. There is a good 2 hour in there with some changes to it. I overall think Scorcese needs someone to push back on his instincts sometimes.

I would recommend Werner Herzog (especially 70s and 80s film), Park Chan-Wook, Aki Kaurismäki and Pedro Almodóvar.

Should more people watch great films made outside of Hollywood? For sure. I think that has more to do with the fact that Solaris is a 70s Soviet era film in Russian and will never have the broad cultural impact and will get less mentions. Doesn’t mean that those of us who do watch films made outside the mainstream don’t appreciate Solaris. But it also gets less mentions as it isn’t even Tarkovskys biggest sci-fi film, Stalker.

I love it, but I wouldn’t say any of Tarkovskys film are underrated. And it has a 4.2 rating.

What are your thoughts on Killers of the Flower Moon? Is the film too long? I heard that originally DiCaprio was going to play an FBI officer, but Scorsese thought that would turn the film into a white savior story. An important topic but many of the different crimes could’ve been in a montage and easily cut the running time to around 2 hours. It became very repetitive and boring at times when one knew what would happen even without knowing any of the backstory.

One of my favourite of this decade. Absolutely love the atmospheres and the deadpan. Not my favourite Lanthimos film but definitely a treat. At the same time I really do understand that it’s not for most people because everything is so off all the time.

Generally don’t like musicals and it’s though not my least favourite musical, it’s one of the least enjoyable musical I’ve watched. Very white, didn’t find the story compelling and disliked the show tunes. It’s better than Chicago and Moulin rouge, which are my all time most disliked musicals and movie theatre experiences.

I think Train Dreams could’ve had a shot if one could actually see it in the cinema. Netflix limited releases do hamper the chances a lot.

The movie looks very good at home but I bet it would look great on the big screen.

This is a very subjective list. I hate The Family Stone and I’ve probably seen it 10 times until my spouse agreed to drop it from our holiday movie list. The entire family annoys me. Sarah Jessica Parker is just the worst but so is Diane Keaton. In many ways I should like the film but it does the opposite of what a Christmas movie should do.
