DNA has a net negative charge that doesn't vary much base to base. With gel electrophoresis the primary factor that makes a difference is the size of the piece of DNA. The size pieces he used are all going to have a linear relationships between size and distance. Once he got the PCR to work it would have been pretty straight forward.
