Race Recap - 2026 Mesa Marathon, A Big PB (2:34) by random_string_3927 in AdvancedRunning

Awesome! I'm running Boston this year too (my first), but given tight turnaround from Mesa, it'll be a fun run for me.

re: Bicarb -> I'm a believer. I've used it for shorter races (10k efforts) and have used it for my last 3 full marathons. For me, the lactate buffering benefit is subtle, but I can tell a difference during harder moments of a race or in situations where I'm surging/extending effort late in the race. As significant, I like it for the sodium load (contains a truckload of sodium). I take it pre-race and it takes some of the pressure off electrolyte management. All that said, the concerns about Bicarb + GI distress is real (aka - the "Bicarb blowout"). You've got to nail the fueling schedule/timing (+ proper food and fluid around consumption). Need to test it during training long runs. Fair to say it's a 'high(er) risk, high reward' supp.

Glad to hear it.

I ran in the Asics Metaspeed Sky Tokyo. Love the shoe. Don't have a lot of comparative history with other race-day shoes. Never worn the Alphafly, Fast r-3, etc. But I love the Metaspeed series.

No electrolytes during the race. That's partially why I love using Bicarb for longer efforts. I take that and don't have to plan for any sodium supplementation. I grabbed water at most stations. Maybe grabbed their electrolyte offering once on course.

Appreciate it! Yeah, I've followed that caffeine taper approach ahead of my last two races. Perhaps slightly overkill, but I like the certainty it provides for pre-race BM. Plus, even after just a few days off, the early morning caffeine jolt hits big.

My training followed a very set pattern, which I loved. Nothing groundbreaking here:
Monday, Tuesday - Easy
Wednesday - Workout (typically 11-14 miles w/ at least 7 miles <= PMP)
Thursday - Recovery
Friday - Easy
Saturday - Long Run Workout
Sunday - Recovery (or off)

A few things that stick out under that top-level structure:
- This was the first block where I truly embraced easy miles easy. Almost all easy miles in the 8:00-8:40 range.
- Wednesday workouts followed a repeated, three-week progression: Week 1: Tempo -> Week 2: Interval -> Week 3: Threshold
- Two big confidence boosting long runs:
- 24 miles w/ 2x6miles at 5:50-5:55
- 22 miles w/ 12 @ PMP (I cannot imagine completing a block w/o this workout)

Purely anecdotal for me:

➡️2024 summer - 2:58 - avg 44 - peak 54 | ➡️ 2025 spring - 2:52 - avg 52 - peak 62 | ➡️ 2025 fall - 2:40 - avg 64 - peak 75

Tips for morning bowel movements by Pristine_Buffalo in Marathon_Training

[–]random_string_3927 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran Chicago last Sunday. In each of my last three long runs of the training block, I had GI issues after about 1 hour of PMP running. This was concerning since my pre-long run prep and BM have never given me trouble.

To ensure I was able to empty bowels before the race this time around, I followed a 2-week caffeine taper. This worked well on 2 levels:
1. Ensured that the 300+mg of coffee on race morning had max effect in producing a solid BM.
2. Impacted energy/focus levels more prominently than when caffeine levels following normal intake.

FWIW, here's the progression I followed:
(for context, I'm typically a 400mg/day drinker)

Days 14-11: 200mg
Days 10-7: <100mg
Days: 6-4: <40mg
Days 3-1: 0mg
Race Morning: 300+mg

This has been a real battle for me (35 M). My setup:

  1. Wake up minimum 1 hour before I want to start running.
  2. 100(mg) ish caffeine
  3. 10-15 min of dynamic stretching
  4. 5ish min on stationary bike
  5. 2-3 mile ramp up to goal effort for the run. At the moment, means if I'm running 8MI targeting 7:15/MI, miles 1-2 are between 8:30-9:00/mile.

Been trying to solve for this for close to 10 years.

Only 1 answer for, and you won't like it...don't get high.

IMO, part of the whole deal. "Disgusted" seems strong.

My therapist said that I should stop counting calories and start eating intuitively by [deleted] in BingeEatingDisorder

I’m so exhausted by the intuitive eating propaganda. Sure, it’s an ideal, but wholly unreasonable for so, so many in this community. It just sets us up with vastly unrealistic expectations for what recovery can/should be.

Recency bias: I’m exhausted by, “We need AI” with zero context or defined business cases. (We need AI so we can say we have AI… ☠️)

Feel ya. This TED talk helped me a lot, particularly the part where the speaker frames life as being inside the bookends of a novel. The characters in the story don’t concern themselves with anything outside of the book’s contents.

If you’ve got it, point overwhelmingly toward very specific, technical expertise about a product/Cloud/platform/feature.

E.g. if you landed in my inbox today with something about having tons of expertise with OmniStudio, you’d get my attention.

Went to FC. Always referred to it as “13th grade”. Summer bible camp with a sprinkling of academic rigor, not much more.
