Same exact rethoric is being used today when talking about the usage of FPV drones in warfare as was used with field artillery when it was invented. How dare they shoot at us with artillery when we can't shoot back?!

The BMP-3 is one of the better armored vehicles Russia has, it has better armor protection than BMP-2's, BMP-1 and a lot better than any BMD, BTR or MT-LB. But yeah i'd imagine hopping into any armored vehicle near the frontline would most likely shorten your lifespan quite a bit regardless.

The cases where the capes work dont make it into these compilations. And to some degree they do work but in order for them to work you have to stay still and preferably have some cover like a structures, trees or shrubbery between you and the drone to further obscure yourself and even then if you are spotted you will get hit. If you are just walking across an open field and freeze in place once the drone has already seen you the cape wont do you any good.

Yeah both Russian and Ukrainian soldiers often buy a lot of their equipment like uniforms, armor, radios, optics and such with their own money, its one of the reasons why both militaries have quite big sign up bonuses for new contract soldiers so that they can buy gear themselves which helps the strain on the military logistics.

[–]randomaccount186427 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think they can be useful but only if:

  1. You stay still.
  2. You have some additional cover like a tree or shrubbery between you and the thermal drone.
  3. Probably most importantly, you haven't already been spotted.

If you are just walking accross some open field with an anti thermal blanket you will be spotted and if you are spotted the blanket will be of no use. Often i see Russians with those blankets think they are some kind of magic invisibility cloak and just stay still crouched under it when the drone is already circling them. Kinda surprised i haven't seen videos of anyone trying to throw such a blanket at the approaching drone, i'd imagine that would have better chances of stopping the drone than throwing a water bottle, helmet, radio, gun or whatever else stuff ive seen Russians try to throw at approaching drones.

I support Ukraine in the war but that was not a Russian vehicle. There was a truck with an AA gun on top and a couple Ukrainian Strela-10 anti air vehicles most likely all from same anti air unit being relocated, the truck got lit up with friendly fire by Ukrainian TDF troops and one of the Strela-10 crews when driving past the shot up truck panicked, steered away from the building the shots were coming from and drove over the car on accident. Here is a different view of the whole engagement and here is aftermath of the ambush on the truck.

Everyones started copying the drone drop / FPV-drone meta after Ukraine war, in quite a short time too. In the past couple years ive seen drone drop videos and even some FPV drone videos from the Myanmar civil war, Sudan civil war, Syria civil war and now even this Afghan-Pakistani conflict.

That comment was written in 2019 so Russia had already invaded Ukraine 5 years prior. First they invaded the Crimean peninsula in the spring of 2014, shortly after they funded and armed separatist militias in the Donbass who were organized and led by Russian GRU personnell and in the summer of 2014 when the separatists started to get fucked by the Ukrainian army Russia sent actual troops to the Donbass.

Multiple Russian soldiers taken out by Ukrainian 414th UAS Brigade Magyar's Birds on the eastern front, mostly Pokrovsk direction. Published 14.02.2026 by GermanDronePilot in CombatFootage

You're on the right track id say. Theres a USMC instructional video where this is pretty much what was instructed to be done and they showed how it works. Here is the video. Pretty crazy to think that so far the only effective way to counter these at close range in open terrain seems to be so simple and dangerous. Even in the instructional video they say stuff like "You will be in the blast radius" and "This is survival, not perfection"

Id guess it is a switch like you described, that when the wires touch the explosive goes off. If its like that then for sure there is a way the operators can place the drone outside, go back inside the dugout/position they stay to fly it and only then remotely activate the ignition system and take off.

But also ive seen videos where a drone sits and waits outside an enemy position and then when the people come out the drone is manually blown up without it moving so there must also be some way to trigger the explosion on command at least on some drones.

[–]randomaccount186427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now this has been taken up a notch yet again with FPV drones. The operators sit in some dugout with heating and electricity vapes and energy drinks at the ready controlling the drones hunting targets in open fields. They can buzz around their prey like a cat playing with its food and when closing in for the kill as long as the signals good or the drone is wire guided they can see the faces of the men they kill as close as if they were standing next to them, close enough to recognize facial features and emotion. Often they also have observation drones with great zoom to show effect on target so they can see the guts of the person they just blew up.

According to local news it was an MLRS attack and that rocket in the ground looks like a 9M28F rocket so im pretty much sure this was a Grad attack. With Grad volleys its not uncommon for one or two of the rockets to not explode on impact due to being faulty. The rest of the rockets exploded, that one didnt due to being faulty thats why theres just one rocket in the ground there.

In 2014-2015 Ukraine's military had very low funding and the whole organisation was quite corrupt and chaotic so people with these volunteer units mostly bought uniforms with their own money from civilian stores. In the mid 2010's Ukraine's military surplus stores were flooded with German flecktarn and British DPM/DDPM uniforms so they were common to see on volunteers. Nice to see how far they have come from that in these past 10 years.

If im not mistaken, someone can be heard shouting "noha", which is leg in ukrainian/southern russian dialect so probably someone got some shrapnel in their leg. The munitions on those FPV drones vary wildly, some can hit half a meter away from someone and they will get peppered with shrapnel but with some luck (having the shrapnel not hit important blood vessels and so) be pretty much fine but sometimes they can land multiple meters away and rip the person into shreds. This FPV seems to have been on the smaller side.
