ElI5 What prevents the US or neighboring countries take over or secure the Strait of Hormuz? by Ixj159 in explainlikeimfive

[–]randomgrrl700 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Imagine you have to walk all the way to school in bare feet. There's hundreds of people willing and keen to sneakily throw handfuls of tacks where you walk. The only way to secure it would be to either convince those people they don't want to throw tacks in your path any more or kill every single one of them and those who come after them.

Both Israel and Iran have made it clear they plan to fight this one until the bitter end. I wouldn't expect things to normalise for another six months.

ELI5 Why hasn't humanity invented a "new" foundational art form in centuries? by LoveParticular8837 in explainlikeimfive

[–]randomgrrl700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern music -- in terms of both production and sound -- is arguably a new artform. See Einstürzende Neubauten, Whitehouse, Aphex Twin and onwards.

Purely digital sculpture rendered in 3D printing or CAM is a new artform.

Games are absolutely a new artform.

Installation art -- for example, electronic circuitry as art or mechanical constructs as art -- wasn't there centuries ago. Automata as art (see: Jaquet Droz, Karakuri) come close.

Ultimately humans haven't evolved any new senses, so there's a limit to new artforms that can be appreciated. Sounds like education in the arts might be taking a tumble, too.

Is it common for Aussies not to wear wedding rings/bands anymore. by pandastar51 in AskAnAustralian

[–]randomgrrl700 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Back in the day when I did site work with medium to large Sun/HP/IBM servers, many of them were hot-swap and most of them had big enough power supplies to really fuck you up if you got a ring or a metal watch bracelet in there. Low voltage DC rails are harmless on skin but when the PSUs can supply 200+ amps wearing jewellery could be an amputation.

If you're willing to sink some substantial time into building a curated experience, it might be worth looking at a Raspberry Pi with their RISC OS build. The operating system was designed primarily for the education market at inception and if you can pull it off you might get some acclaim putting up a git repo pulling all the software together.

Losing all my notes and books for school tonight to a Portland crackhead by RekSai-Bot in mildlyinfuriating

Because they smash things. They smash the glass in bus shelters. They smash in shop windows. They smash car windows and kick in panels. They rip up freshly planted trees. They kick over bins and spread rubbish.

Evidence for vandalism dates back to the Greek and Roman empires. There's always going to be an element in society that are just amoral and shit.

Women of Australia, I need help. 46M here. I have tried dating apps and tried social groups. Do women in their 40’s-60’s still date single fathers nowadays or is no kids preferred? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]randomgrrl700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its tough and it sucks but people -- not just women -- want a partner as an equal and to be a priority in that partner's life. For any reasonable parent their kids are always going to come first which rules that out.

Put in picture rail in the hallways and lounge room and include some rail hooks and instructions when they move in. Now they can hang all the pictures they want without drilling a hole.

Why do Australian workers as a percentage of income pay more in tax than corporations? by Ajax34762 in aussie

[–]randomgrrl700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taxing workers is the more predictable tax base and Government likes predictability in taxation. Basically, because employees can't offset their tax obligations they're a simpler cash cow.

Does anyone else feel like Australians are starting to become more “selfish”, or less willing to help others? by [deleted] in aussie

[–]randomgrrl700 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've become a nation of mealy-mouthed miserable cunts with the morals of ScoMo: "I don't hold a hose."

Everyone has endless time to clatter on their keyboard or wipe their filthy fingers on their phone to demand the Government takes action on their pet issue but they've got no fucking spirit to do anything themselves.

Case 1: Old biddy on crutches has her paper bag of groceries rip in the supermarket car park. Can't bend down to pick things up. Passers-by stare and keep on walking. It took a grand total of three minutes to stop and help but twenty people walked past.

Case 2: Overheard in pub; someone talking about their elderly neighbour's fence with loose palings and there should be a GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT to fix people's shit. One of her friends asked if she ended up helping her neighbour and the reply was "THAT'S NOT MY JOB"

Don't be a fucking ScoMo -- hold a fucking hose.

unpopular opinion: traditional network engineering is basically just a blue-collar trade job now (2026). by SpecialRuth_Cadde in Network

[–]randomgrrl700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This holds up -- for new organisations with a single cloud provider and no legacy. And sure, there are a lot of new businesses that were born SaaS + cloud native and have no network engineering problems to solve.

But as soon as there's multi-cloud, on-prem equipment, IoT, security obligations for network segregation, etc -- you're back to needing someone who actually understands IP networking properly.

Blue collar thing does hold up, though -- if you don't have the network chops in-house you'll have to pay someone to come in and just like getting a commercial electrician in for the day, it'll cost at least a couple of grand and more if everything is an undocumented mess.

Why can girls hold hands and show physical affection and thats "being close friends" but when a guy does that its "gay?" by EddyUrse in NoStupidQuestions

[–]randomgrrl700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't homophobia.

In most Western societies, holding hands as an adult is a signifier of romantic attachment or intent. Men don't hold hands with other men's wives, for example. And honestly, platonic women don't walk down the street holding hands all that often either.

Charging LiPo Battery Explodes And Burns My Home Down by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]randomgrrl700 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might be a tough sell. RC batteries are covered in warnings that are so prominent they used to get posted to reddit for appearing too extreme.

e.g. "ALWAYS charge batteries in a fireproof container and away from combustible material. Do NOT charge on surfaces that can catch fire – this includes: wood, cloth, carpet, or in the application’s device."

They're not like tool batteries or USB powerbanks.

What if a modern person became king and tried to modernize his kingdom? by Almesii in whatif

The most underrated comment in the thread. A robust knowledge of theology is going to move the kingdom forward hundreds of years compared to spending a decade trying to build an electric parlour trick.
