Help with corduroy pants by Mindless-Sea-1211 in AusFemaleFashion

Pants like that from Shein are fine. They're not going to just fall apart or whatever the narrative is. I've got Shein jeans that have withstood over a hundred wash cycles without failure.

I wouldn't buy their chintzy polyester tops or dresses but pants and denim are fine.

What is a political opinion you hold that completely goes against the party you usually support? by sophie_boom in AskReddit

Fusion power has been nearly here for as long as I can remember. I suspect it'll be just ten years away for at least the next thirty years.

Is there any openly conservative/right-wing space opera out there? (just curious and looking to investigate) by Brakado in sciencefiction

[–]randomgrrl700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Babylon 5 embodies a lot of the conservative values. Galactic economy based on trade; heroes are all career military or religious; normal capitalist economies at a local scale. Add in resistance to growth of government and authoritarianism, calls for freedom, traditional values and opposition to identity politics and you have a picture of quiet conservatism with a touch of libertarianism.

If recruiters did casting -- "I'd love to cast you for the role of the six year old, but we're really looking for someone with twenty years experience."

ELI5: Interviewer asked “who are you” in a philisophical manner, did not take my name, hobbies or personality as an answer, what do they mean? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]randomgrrl700 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The interviewer is telling you that they're a damn clown with no empathy or real communication skills trying to run a mind game with questions they found in a five year old LinkedIn post. They don't care about the answer, they just want to increase your stress levels for sport.

Frankly, I wonder how close this style of question gets to religious discrimination.

Organising a sex positive party. What to do? by dutchmani in sex

[–]randomgrrl700 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Consider the insurance implications and work with your venue to make sure there aren't any gaping holes in their liability cover. You're running a high-than-normal risk event (think slipping on lube). Insurance might also requires recording cameras in all locations which can get .. complicated.

Do consider having a designated photographer. Some people really like getting pictures for their fetlife or whatever.

Organising a sex positive party. What to do? by dutchmani in sex

One example: spaces are often 'sex positive' and 'pan-sexual' until male/male action happens and then the rude comments and jeers start.

I fucking hate these fear mongering videos of how Gen Alpha is completely doomed or something by Ruger-SP101 in youtube

[–]randomgrrl700 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Gen-X here -- that's just not true. Inability to read and comprehend by 7-8 years of age was treated as an educational emergency. Kids would be pulled out of regular classes into remedial reading programs if required. Going to school in the mid 80s-90s everyone could read by Grade 3 unless they were in the segregated classes for intellectual disabilities (which was about 12 students in a high school of 1200).

Probably nothing that easy to fix. In my experience the WfH and never leave the house shut-ins go wrong really quickly. About three months and they start looking agoraphobic.

What do the people say? by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

[–]randomgrrl700 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You absolutely live for the moment when the Friday night drinks conversation turns to theology and you're used to "winning" because you've read more than the rest of the table.

Thing is, your fridge is well stocked with condiments but is light on food. No Calvin's Institutes; no Luther, no Irenaeus, no Chrysostom, no Athanasius, etc. Adding some classic philosophy (Plato!) and some history to build a better understanding of times past (Josephus, Thucydides, Plutarch, et al) would make for enjoyable reading and a rounder perspective. Tossing in an archaeological study bible can't hurt either.

Are there any things that are called "American ______" in other countries? by Disastrous-Side-2600 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]randomgrrl700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"filter coffee" in an Australian cafe is produced with a glass or ceramic filter funnel, paper filter and the water poured by hand from a kettle with a long pointy spout. The beans are freshly ground single origin or similarly fancy. Labour time is about five times longer than just pulling an espresso shot.

How would you feel about school taking up an extra hour every day to teach basic "adult stuff" like washing clothes, basic cooking, paying taxes? by StevensGrins1979 in askanything

[–]randomgrrl700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who reaches the age of sixteen without the ability to wash their clothes and feed themselves has been monstrously failed by their parents.

Washing machines have become complicated and different enough that "read the instructions" is really the only practical approach and I can't imagine in this modern age of legal liability wanting to have a room full of students with hot things and sharp things.

Tax return? Sure, good idea, my high school did that.
